So why does the winning team of these "tournaments" have banners that say state champion"

State wide tournament. They won the tournament. KHSAA approved tournament. Call the champion what you want but the title "State Champion" is accurate. If they did the tournament at the end of the year the week before the Sweet 16 would that make it feel better for you?

A school can put up a banner in their gym saying anything they want but those banners do not come the KHSAA. KHSAA does not recognize these teams as a state champion anymore than any other invitational Christmas tournament.

Does it bother people that a school puts up a banner that says state champion after they win a state wide tournament versus all other schools in the state that are a certain size?

The only people who should complain about that are people who want the sweet 16 to end and see KY go to classification.

I think it bothers the ones that don’t participate in it because they don’t understand the importance it is to the smaller schools.

You are probably right.

The flip side of taking potshots and denigrating the All A is if the KHSAA goes to classification, we will never have one true state champion again. We will have 2 or 3 teams that are all "legitimate" state champions with equal claims to the title of state champion.

I don't have time to do it, but it'd be interesting to see what size school have won the Sweet 16 over the past 25 years. That's about when consolidation of schools started to happen IMO.

I would like to see the two teams that played in the title game, or even the final four and see what size schools made it that far over the past 25 years.

Football is it's own animal when it comes to classification. The number of players on rosters, impact of the size of the athletes and the nature of the sport make it a stand alone conversation on classification.

You are correct up to the point where you say it makes the sport "stand alone." To think that the size of the school has no effect on the available athletes for, say volleyball, or baseball is foolhardy. Same for basketball. There have been a multitude of studies, analyses and reports on the average size of schools making the finals for soccer, baseball, basketball, etc. and the overriding factor on who makes it and who doesn't is size of the school. Are there anomalies? Yes. Rarely. Student population is the primary factor that separates the haves and the have nots in the vast, vast majority of Region winners and non-winners. In the studies I have seen not even Public versus Private has as much effect as does student population (with the clear exception to that premise being volleyball in this state). When you eliminate 50 to 60 percent of the schools from even remote consideration for a state or even Regional title BEFORE they even field the team, there is a flaw in your system. This isn't an "everybody gets a trophy" position, this is the reality of single class competition. Classification is long overdue. The realities of the current system are that a very limited collection of schools have the ability to compete for state titles in the various sports and to think otherwise is unrealistic.

2000: Elizabethtown, 764 vs. Lex. Catholic, 840

1999: Ballard, 1882 vs. Scott Co. 2514

This is the last 20 years. Plus this is the enrollment for 17-18. I wasn't going to click each year to look up the enrollment. So some could be a little higher or lower when they actually made it to the finals.

Thanks Sweet 16.

So in the last 20 years, where there have been 40 finals' participants, there have been:

22 teams with 600 or more boys.

18 teams with less than 600 boys (assuming 50% for every co-ed school).

35 Public School teams.

5 Private School teams.

I will add only one team that qualifies for the All A. Shelby Valley was the only one.
