Colonels_Wear_Blue Posted December 27, 2017 Author Posted December 27, 2017 I spoke with a New Cath guy today and he told me that there is indeed a plan in the works. Coming real soon. Details?
KentuckyJoe Posted December 27, 2017 Posted December 27, 2017 What has the bishop done to get in the way or screw things up? A few years ago there was a giant offer on table to buy the land NewCath site on. There was also a plot of land available where a large Catholic school could be built being you com one BB and NewCath.
Rap Posted December 27, 2017 Posted December 27, 2017 I find this to be an interesting topic. My personal interest to Ncc and a football/soccer field of their own is gone and now graduated so i'm no longer concerned personally. My kids live in Alexandria now and their kids will attend either CC or Brossart. However after all these years I now find it funny that this is suddenly a topic on here after never really being one in the past. Why now? Is it the comments in the other threads about dwindling enrollment which is partially being blamed for the football program not doing as well last few years and the coach being forced out the door and Ncc feels a complex will change all this. Is it the fact that Brossart has now shown plans on here and is in process of clearing land to begin building their own complex? Why isn't Ncc current situation good enough anymore what has changed. After all these years why all of a sudden is this a hot topic. Seems to me that for both Ncc and Brossart to build complexes is being unrealistic about where the enrollment will be with these 2 schools in the future. Can they both afford to spend millions of dollars and both stay functional with declining enrollment? Like Ram said wouldn't it be smarter to build one complex together and plan on both schools being combined at some time in the future. It just seems to be the way the schools are headed. I think in football they were both pushed up to the 2A level 6 years ago or so and now Brossart is back to 1A for the past two seasons and Ncc is heading back that way also. So now one has basically begun building and the other has posters saying a plan is now in place and its coming soon. Just doesn't seem to make a lot of sense to me. Maybe both schools think a big rush is coming of students with rising costs in tuition and dollars seeming to be smaller in most families pockets but I just don't see it. Is Brossart making a mistake building a sports complex? I don't know but I would more likely think for both to build one is a mistake. Just can't see both being utilized for a very long time, if there aren't enough students to go around. What has been the highest level of enrollment at these 2 schools, 450 kids each? I believe now Ncc is in 320s or so and Brossart around 260's?

I made phone calls to keep them from merging.

While Brossart's enrollment currently looms in the 250 range, confirmed projected increases beginning in 2019-20 show classes of over 100 each expected. Brossart is very much planning for the future.

Not a lot of new homes going into the river cities. Lots of homes going into Southern Campbell.

ColonelPops Posted December 28, 2017 Posted December 28, 2017 Exactly. Could you imagine if four NKY schools like Highlands, CovCath, NCC and Beechwood combined and build a facility and shared the expense and attendance at games? What's in it for the schools? Kids want to play on Friday nights. At least 3 of those schools already have nice places. Why share?
mexitucky Posted December 28, 2017 Posted December 28, 2017 I've always wondered if this was a story that wasn't true that just keeps being told and people believe it. It is true. Something cool is about to happen up there that will make people forget that poor decision making by the powers that were at the 2 schools.
Sweeperboy Posted December 28, 2017 Posted December 28, 2017 Exactly. Could you imagine if four NKY schools like Highlands, CovCath, NCC and Beechwood combined and build a facility and shared the expense and attendance at games? I know you are making a point and pretty sure you have seen a game at Highlands DCM and I don’t think there would be much if anything that could drag them away from there. Not many venues better in KY than DCM But you are correct about the idea of consolidating funds to build a state of the art facility...
chewmehum Posted December 28, 2017 Posted December 28, 2017 The diocese is committed to keeping schools in the inner- city. Schools like NCC and Holy Cross aren't going anywhere soon. The other diocese high schools in NKY are new or extensively renovated. Look for those two schools to have money spent on them in the near future

Not many venues better in KY than DCM But you are correct about the idea of consolidating funds to build a state of the art facility... I'm not recommending anyone do away with their facility, it was a mythical thought that if a time came where multiple schools needed a new facility they could pull their resources together and make one venue and make a much bigger facility with more amenities. I used those schools just to make a point of what could be. Sure, in our state, most are more familiar with "Friday Night Games", but if it was something that had been done for years, it could be something looked forward to, to have a Friday night game, a Saturday afternoon game and a Saturday night game at the same facility with fans from all three schools wanting to attend all three games and boost attendance for all schools involved. Another example, say all the Catholic schools in Louisville build one facility. The Trinity and St. Xavier game could be played there instead of having to play that game at UL, plus the other Catholic schools could play there and fans of all the schools could watch all the games. Yet another thought, Pikeville has sports facilities that are not owned by the school. They are "City Parks". This allows the city to get grants the schools could not. The college used the field and the high school uses the field.
Sweeperboy Posted December 28, 2017 Posted December 28, 2017 You do eliminate the “home field” advantage by having a shared facility. For schools that do not have a home field or need major improvements then yes it makes sense. But a hard sell for schools that relish home field advantage
