So you are saying that a coach could scratch an official based on his religion? Sorry, I just don't believe that. I have a little more faith in the system than that. I don't think there are many crooked officials out there and I don't think many coaches think that way either. Refresh my memory, Montgomery was scratched for what reason?

I have been on the field when Redman asked how many Catholic refs are working so "never" is a little severe. He says it in jest but usually after a call goes against him. He knows how to coach and manage the game very well including officials. I really respect what he has accomplished.

Rock; Please refrain from using "crooked" with any official. I am very offended by that. I did not say or imply anything to that idea. I did not imply or infer that "catholic' meant crooked in Coach R's mind. Coaches want fair officials but prefer similarities to their team make ups. Many times male referees get scratched from doing girls' games because they don't approach it the same way as the boy's game. Some girls coaches prefer female referees. It really goes back to preferred similarity.

Coaches are not required to give reasons for scratches. Montgomery allegedly contacted Jeff Marrow at J-Town and informed him that he had 2 Male graduates on his game against Male in the semifinals. When confronted, Vic went ballastic and had to be escorted from the arena. Khsaa removed him from the championship game. What wasn't reported much was J-town got the Male officials off the game in the semi's.

I think this is way off the thread so I will cease and desist.

First, I think you hit the nail on the head when you admitted that Red asked in "jest". Its a joke. You implied that it was somehow connected to his decision to scratch an official.

Second, if its not implied in your post that the ref would cheat his team due to their personal connections what is the point of the scratch? You said he would inquire about Catholics on the crew, what was your point then? You seem to be hung up on the use of certain words. So Red would ask about the ref's religion because he thought maybe Catholic refs went a little easy on the holding calls and were strict with the pass interference? If you are "offended" by something in my posts you have no one to blame but yourself for bringing up this ridiculous premise.

Third, I think a coach would be within his rights to scratch a ref that is an alum of your opponent's school. Many times refs with these same connections have proven impartiality over the years and they ref these games. But when in doubt, I'd give the benefit of doubt to the coach. The ref over reacted.

I find the word " crooked" offensive and that is my fault? What is ridiculous is both of us think Male has the better team and you still want to argue about something. I hope you find happiness somewhere in your life.

Just answer this question. Do coaches want no Catholics on their crew because of their objection to their religious beliefs or do they think they may call the game in favor of the opposing Catholic school. I think its evident what you insinuated. I don't think you actually believe that but you did bring it up, not me. When you read "crooked", it offends you even though you introduced the spectre of improprieties. What word would you use? BTW, I'm a very happy guy.:dancingpa :D

I apologize to the other readers on this hijacked thread. Rock please take this myopic view someplace else and we can discuss this. Please understand that not everyone went to X and T and they have different views than you. Expand the vision and you shall grow.

This is a hard game to predict because while both teams want to win :

1. Neither team wants to show everything. and

2. Both teams will be testing (coverages, defensive and offensive adjustments, mismatches, tendancies)

The playoff game is the one....and a meeting is almost definite.

The playoff game is definitely the more important game, BUT with a win in this game, the winner gets to set the venue for an eventual playoff game (if both teams make it to Round 2). That could mean important considerations such as playing on an artificial surface like PJCS or on a home field natural surface. Let's say the weather gets nasty in November (it's happened before) and the choice is between a muddy mess at Manual Stadium and the fast-draining surface at Papa Johns. I can imagine that a team with a speed advantage might opt for a more stable playing surface. Winner of this game will also get to control the location of the Round 3 game.
