Roncalli was very good this year, with their only loss to Bishop Chatard (CovCath fans will remember them). Roncalli beat East Central in St. Leon in the regular season in a close game and clobbered a very good Mooresville team in the playoffs. Roncalli was a top 10 Indiana team this year, regardless of class.

He goes through coaching jobs like crap through a goose! Rody is an opportunistic feeder. Always looking for the next best thing, and in an ideal world he was hoping to eventually land a job coaching in the big-time college ranks. Not sure whether or not that's still on his list of things to do at this point. I remember Coach Ray recommending to Clines and the hiring committee at CCH that they not hire Rodenberg even though on paper he looked like the best hire, because he'd inevitably be moving on as soon as possible. Mike Clines, the know-it-all of all know-it-alls, went ahead and hired him anyway. Rodenberg came from 11 years at McNick, won his state championship at CCH the year after he was hired, and then immediately skipped across the river to Roger Bacon the next year. A lot of people saw it as Rodenberg heading back to his alma mater when in reality, it was Rodenberg heading for an opportunity to step into head coaching in the GCL. Then Moeller opened up the next year and and he skipped to Moeller. He was hoping success at Moeller would be his ticket to college coaching, but after he floundered at Moe he was canned and the best opportunity he could find was Lawrence Central. Then two years later he saw the opportunity at Roncalli, and now he's in Indy. Opportunistic feeding. 6 jobs in 27 years of head coaching. 10+ years at two of those jobs.
Colonels_Wear_Blue
Rodenberg was named head coach at Indian Hill in Cincinnati yesterday. Interesting move. Gets him back to the Greater Cincinnati area, and I'd have to imagine the job pays well...but Indian Hill isn't exactly known for their football program. They really aren't known for their sports for the most part. School's been around since the 50s, and they have a whopping 4 state championships - one in boys swimming & diving, one in girls lacrosse, and two in girls soccer. Archbishop McNicholas, OH (~550, coed) 1994-2004 Covington Catholic, KY (~550, all-male) 2005-2006 Roger Bacon, OH (~475, coed) 2007 Archbishop Moeller, OH (~900, all-male) 2008-2017 Lawrence Central, IN (~2500, coed) 2018-2019 Roncalli, IN (~1100, coed) 2020-2021 Coach Rodenberg has one state title from his tenure at Cov Cath, two from his time at Moeller, and one from his stop at Roncalli.
Bluesport
If Rodenberg wasn't CCH's coach in 05' and 06', they would have 2 titles.

A friend of mine who played at CCH during that time says the same thing. He also swears up and down that Rodenberg is responsible for the immediate implosion of the CCH football program right after he left. He claims that Rodenberg knew he had two really good classes and he put all his eggs in that basket and did zero to develop anyone else or the feeder program.

The Colonel Youth Football program was started by Coach Brossart, who was the hire after Rodenberg. I can say that Cov Cath's freshman rosters, for whatever reason, were noticeably smaller than usual in 2007 and 2008. From all reports, the anecdote about Coach Ray's thoughts on hiring Coach Rodenberg from @The Oracle's post above is true.

I agree with all of this except he won two state championships at Moeller and winning two state championships in Ohio D1 is a huge accomplishment. With that said, I have always thought Rodenberg was an opportunist looking out for number one.

I was still somewhat new to the area during Rodenberg’s time at CCH, and was only just starting to follow and learn about football in this area, so I can’t really comment on what he might have done back then. I will say I’ve heard him speak at various seminars and he is a very sharp, well spoken, football mind. And he’s won at several places. I can see why he keeps getting jobs. The Braves were 3-7 last season in his first year as head coach there, and they are currently 2-2 including their 42-21 over Mariemont (OH) last night.
Breds82
Was he at CovCath to give him the nickname “Rody”? Just curious if he endeared himself to the fan base in his short time there to get a lovable nickname.
