Former_Colonel_92
First off, I understand that officials are not perfect and no one can make every call. That being said officials should call the game without bias and with player safety at the forefront. Towards the end of a local game. With the score 43-7 the winning team substituted their Varsity QB for their Freshman QB. During the small amount of action the Freshman he took what looked to be a very late hit on a screen pass directly in front of the white hat official. No call was given. Upon explanation the official explained that "Had it been the starter he would have called it" and something about it being hard to penalize a team on the losing end of a running clock. I find that inexcusable. The score should not dictate penalties and age nor status of a player should not dictate calls. Luckily the young man was not hurt but the actions/explanations of the official in question shows he DOES NOT have player safety at the forefront of this responsibilities and he feels he should have the power to affect a game when he so chooses. these are two qualities that any referee should not posses. Am i wrong to be upset by this or do you feel this is acceptable. Thoughts? Opinions?
thsrocks
This a ludicrous explanation by the official. I have never seen a penalty call or non-call made based on whether or not a player is a starter or a substitute. This official should be suspended for the rest of this season at the very minimum. JIM SEYMOUR # 85
I can't believe an Official would be dumb/stupid enough to make such a statement - let alone pass on a clear late hit - THAT HE SAW !!
ManOfTroy
Terrible job by the head official. That is how a lopsided game gets out of hand. He's lucky that it didn't.

Guest
The bottom line is that the official should call the game on every possession as if the score is 0-0! It is the coaches decision to determine if they go for a touchdown, kick a field goal or take a knee. THE SCORE IS NOT IN THE OFFICIAL'S HANDS! This gentleman wearing a white hat is notorious for this from the JFL level all the way to the varsity level. I believe a delibrate "NO CALL" on a late hit should be grounds for a temporary suspension. Give this person a little time to realize that a young man could have been injured. THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE IN FIRST STRING AND SECOND STRING! They are both young athletes that deserve an honest official! Period!

frankdracman23
my question why we throwing the ball for?? Maybe the 43 points all came on runs up the middle and to continue to do so would be doing no one any good. Maybe the Frosh QB is totally inexperienced and a screen pass is a good way to let him throw a short pass and get some confidence. Maybe it was 3rd and 25 and instead of chucking it 30 yards down the field a screen pass was a chance to pick up and few yards and then punt or maybe even a first down. atm10
Not saying it wasn't said but how do we know it was exactly as given? Then everyone comes in with " he should be suspended" " never allowed to officiate again" etc... My only problem with these "scenarios" is we take as complete truth a quote someone post in a public forum. Trust me kids do not always give an accurate accounting of interactions....again certainly not the thing to say in regards to starter versus non starter if it did occur as posted. However let's take it with a grain of salt when passing judgement.

Who was the explanation given to; the coach, the kids, the fans, a paper, TV crew after the game? Many of these fall under myth.
