Hearsay Posted September 2, 2006 Posted September 2, 2006 Tigers roll to 3-0. Excellent defensive performance. Jr. HB Kelvin Scott goes for 6 carries, 142 yds, and a 44 yd. TD. Jr. QB Alex Smith goes 6-9, 85 yds, and a 13 yd. TD to Sr. WR Wenquel Graves, who had 4 of the catches. Sr. FS Paul Downs had the back-breaker, a 59 yd. INT return for a score midway through the 3rd period. Nelson County (now 1-2) gave a gutsy performance, just could not muster much once they got to the Tiger 35. Game was only 7-0 at half. FB Devin Boone carried the ball on 70% of the Cardinals' offensive plays, went for 126 yds. LB Brandon Williams is a legit. college prospect, had nearly 20 tackles.

EasyPro Posted September 2, 2006 Posted September 2, 2006 Congrats Btown! Good Job Cardinals. Not much execution on offense for the Cards, but they'll only continue to improve.
CardinalFan55 Posted September 2, 2006 Posted September 2, 2006 Congrats Btown! Good Job Cardinals. Not much execution on offense for the Cards, but they'll only continue to improve. What improved? The offense lacked the fire from the get go.. For the second week and a row.... Don't get me wrong I love the cardinals and our defense is playing their hearts out. But, the offense we are running just isn't working.. Something needs to change and change fast... You can't give the ball to your fullback 25 of the 30 offensive plays and hope to win against a team that is fast as Bardstown...
cardsdad Posted September 3, 2006 Posted September 3, 2006 Something needs to change and change fast... The change needs to come from switching the quaterback!
cardsdad Posted September 3, 2006 Posted September 3, 2006 the change needs to be made by switching the quaterback,
Hearsay Posted September 3, 2006 Author Posted September 3, 2006 The QB is fine. We're in week 3 of a brand new offense, people. When you have 4A lineman as small as Nelson does, you need a scheme for angle blocking and the outside veer is the scheme. What would you run? I-formation? Line isn't strong enough. Spread? Neither Avis nor Keene have the arm yet. Pro? Tackles are not good enough to seal, and guards are not quick enough for misdirection. No, Bruner is on the right track. Keene is young and raw. He has excellent athletic potential. There were at least 3 plays last night when he turned busted plays into first downs. He also has a strong arm, but he needs to look where he throws. Downs' INT return for a TD was the back-breaker I will admit. But I do not fault going to Devin Boone. He is a talent, and I think it was kind of like the movie 'Tin Cup' Bruner was going to run it until it was blocked correctly. Nelson was a different team last night, and I for one, am looking forward to the future.
CardinalFan55 Posted September 3, 2006 Posted September 3, 2006 I don't think we should change the quarterback.. Keene is a very talented young man.. But I do believe to play at the level he is playing he needs to grow up FAST.. Just like you said he needs to look where he is throwing the ball.. And I don't fault Bruner for going to Boone, but for god sake can we get a few more plays except Boone up the middle.. Boone to the left.. Bone to the middle..Punt.. give me a break.. We need to throw on first down and switch things up..

Jessie Beavers is a legitimate target, but I think we have to convince everybody that we can run the veer ice cold (like Navy and Air Force), before we can then pull up and utilize the TE, FB, etc. in an option-passing game. The Navy and Air Force analogy is a good one. Bruner is a drill seargent. His O-line runs to the line of scrimmage. The numbers are up. The weight room is for WORKING OUT, not jabbering and play-acting. Now jut spend some $$$ on facilities and stadium for him, and he'll bring this program back.

Good positve reply to some of the negative replies I read on this thread. The program has been in decline (for various reasons) for a number of years. Now, all of a sudden a new coach comes in and rallies the team to a big win over Bullitt East and expectations for a young team in a new system is expected to win each and every game. Relax, let the kids get experience and they will be fine, unless the naysayers try to undermind the trust and positive things that are happening. Hearsay seems to have a grasp on the situation and what the capabilities of this young team are.

Decline since winning a title in 96 or in decline since "upsetting" you and your boys at Manual in 2004? The program took a turn for the worse in 1999 when they started being paired up with the X/H/M and Butler/PRP district. Like I have said the Nelson Co kids are hard-nosed, tough kids with good football minds and a LITTLE talent (1995-1998 great talent!). Always have been and always will be. Coach B and the rest DO NOT need upset parents voicing their opinion about nothing. This team SHOULD be greatly improved from last years...they have a ton of returning starts that are just Jrs. I was told the JV team pretty much started on Friday as well. They'll be fine and the offense will keep them in most every game.
Mr. No Name Posted September 3, 2006 Posted September 3, 2006 Something needs to change and change fast... The change needs to come from switching the quaterback! Oh yeah, like anyone else could do better? Bottom line is that the D is going to have to hold teams to under 20 points most games because the O isnt going to be able to score, but its not Jordan's fault.
