PurpleHaze Posted September 2, 2006 Posted September 2, 2006 Junior QB Trent Steelman and senior RB Avery Hibbitt see their first substantial action in 2006, and the Purples pretty much had their way with the Dragons tonight. The offense looked really good tonight, though they showed a tendency to shoot themselves in the foot at times. The defense did a great job on a very explosive Dragon offense. Central scored first, then the Purples answered with 29 unanswered points before the Dragons could score again. The Purples now have won the last four games in the series and 12 of the last 14. BGHS has their home opener with Greenwood next week (Greenwood beat Ohio Co tonight!!) and Central hits the road to visit Manual. Both Central and BGHS are 2-1 on the season now.
thepeopleschamp Posted September 2, 2006 Posted September 2, 2006 wow!!!!St.Xavier, must be absolutely loaded this year., congrats on the nice win BGHS.
PurplePride92 Posted September 2, 2006 Posted September 2, 2006 Good job Purples. Gotta love a win over Central. Unfinished Business.
DragonFire Posted September 2, 2006 Posted September 2, 2006 Blah. Sums it up for me. Will say this about the X comment: St. X no doubt has a great team as they always do. One of the best in the state if not THE best. But don't make the mistake of believing that the BG team they saw was this BG team. Not comparable in the least.
Colonel Henderson Posted September 2, 2006 Posted September 2, 2006 But don't make the mistake of believing that the BG team they saw was this BG team. Not comparable in the least. ??? Help those of us outside the loop on BG. The injury situation or they are just getting things going after a couple of games or both?
DragonFire Posted September 2, 2006 Posted September 2, 2006 The injuries. Through two games BG had passed for 88 yards. I'm fairly confident they passed for more than 150 tonight, maybe more. Makes a big difference with Steelman at QB rather than Moore, not the least of which is that Moore can't pass to himself. Steelman threw two completions on the first two BG plays, and on their first scoring drive he threw three passes for probably somewhere in the realm of 60-70 yards. Hibbitt had some impact although I'm not certain how much. The other RB , Davis, had a very good night as well. He is incredibly talented and would start IMO if not for Hibbitt. But the #1 thing is that BG can pass now, which was severely lacking the first two games. Their defense has been at or near full strength for the season, but this is the first game that their offense has really been relatively healthy and it showed.
Red Beaulieu Posted September 2, 2006 Posted September 2, 2006 Their offense being healthy gives their defense some breathing room. BG # 5 Chris Johnson also had a great night. He was very explosive.
PurpleHaze Posted September 2, 2006 Author Posted September 2, 2006 :dancingpa :dancingpa Great win BG!!!! The game was a good game. Both teams did really well. I am very proud of both. I hate the loss for Warren Central. PH and I have respect for all of the teams. Central should not have any shame with this loss. They played well and played against an awsome bunch of boys, coaches, parents and fans! Way to go to BOTH teams
STXMAN Posted September 2, 2006 Posted September 2, 2006 BG - Congratulations on the win. A class program.
PurpleHaze Posted September 2, 2006 Author Posted September 2, 2006 Kevin Wallace said that Avery Hibbitt was not 100% last night, but the Park City Daily News reported that he had 59 yards rushing to go along with the one yard score. Chris Johnson had an amazing game! Steelman was 10 of 17 for over 180 yards and one score in his comeback game. And he was clearly rusty early in the game despite the early completions. Not shabby at all. I will come up with some numbers when they are available. I want to emphasize that Central is NOT a substandard football team. When a team finally gets back its two top guns after the offense was floundering earlier in the season would pump up any team. Central is an excellent football team and will do some damage in the 4A playoffs!
PurpleHaze Posted September 4, 2006 Author Posted September 4, 2006 Okay, here's what jumps out: 1. Trent Steelman was 10 of 17, 58.8%, 186 yards, one int, one TD (to D.L. Moore). Blake Ayers did not have his typical night at QB...he's much better than he showed Friday night. He was 4 of 10, 40%, only 57 yards, one int, and one TD. 2. Central found the ground route tough going...ran 47 times for only 116 yards, a 2.5 avg. But they hung on to the football, no fumbles lost. The Purples ran 34 times for 138 yards, an un-Purple like 4.1 avg, and they lost one fumble. 3. Hibbitt wasn't 100%, but he did gain 75 on the ground on 17 attempts, a 4.4 yard average, one fumble, and the one yard TD run. 4. Like I said, Chris Johnson had an outstanding game. He ran twice for 46 yards and a score, and he dominated punt returns in the game, running back three for 71 yards, a 23.7 avg, and a 30 yd TD. He also had another one called back because of an illegal block. 5. SS Jared Carpenter and OLB Jeremy Mitchell did very well on the defensive side of the ball. Carpenter had nine solos, one assist for ten total tackles, one sack and two tackles for losses totalling 13 yards. Mitchell had six solos, four assists for ten total tackles, one sack and two tackles for losses totalling 13 yards in losses. ILB Tucker Jackson, who had been one of the early walking wounded, did well also, with six solos and two assists for eight total tackles. He also had one tackle for a loss of two yards. Stuart Hines also had a QB sack for a 13 yard loss.
PurpleHaze Posted September 4, 2006 Author Posted September 4, 2006 PH forgot about mentioning ILB Chris Tucker. He had 10 total tackels also...he had 7 solos and 3 assists. He also had a great tackle for a loss of 11 yards! PH has taught me well!!!
DragonFire Posted September 4, 2006 Posted September 4, 2006 10 attempted passes compared to 47 rushing attempts. It's even worse than I thought. It's no wonder Blake had an off night; they never called pass plays.
Blockbuster Posted September 4, 2006 Posted September 4, 2006 WC had more than 10 pass plays called, but the Purples had Ayers on the run all night which made the rushing attempts look a bit skewed.
