Clyde Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Slow start and then it went as expected. Career TD pass #100 for Fieger.
theguru Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 The Tigers are a formidable 1A Football Team.
Beechwoodfan Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Terrible 1st quarter for the Tigers but they turned it around. Holy Cross played very tough.
Old_Bulldog Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Slow start and then it went as expected. Career TD pass #100 for Fieger. Who caught #100?
Clyde Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Who caught #100? #100 Justice #101 Benson #102 Slusher
Voice of Reason Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Much closer game than I expected. But in the playoffs a win is a win.
Cougars C/O2017 Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 We played our hearts out. Congratulations to Beachwood. They will win the championship imo
tripled6610 Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Beechwoods defense played very well considering that one of the better athletes was on the bench. Holy Crosses points came early and because of fumbles. Even with the touchdown, Aiden Justice had a tough game. Holy Cross's linemen were huge and those boys played hard the hole game, the combo of these massive kids and one of the worst fields I have ever seen kept Justice from doing his thing. Number 14 for the Cougers played one heck of a game, not only did he play QB and very well, running and throwing but he manned up Slusher on an island no less got a pick and did pretty well against Brett, until Brett was able to get a slant for 60 yards that put Beechwood up two scores. Lucas Benson played his best game on both sides of the ball by far this year and was needed to get this win, when the regulars were dropping passes for the first time that I can remember he saved the day. Slusher sealed the deal with clutch hard running from the backfield. Congrats to Feiger on getting 100 TD passes, he earned the 3 tonight, multiple players in his face all night.
TheFauxTiger Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Zero running game for Tigers. Gotta figure that out with thier stud RB out. Field was a disgrace, no way a regional champ should be allowed to be played on it.
bjaynes Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 The field looked like Clifford the Big Red Dog relieved himself on it. About 85% yellow and 15% green. The footing was very suspect. Visitor's bleachers were in terrible shape. But this is what builds character, right? I will keep telling myself this.
TheFauxTiger Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Lets not forget that Evan Perry for HC was out tonight also. He's a difference maker for them, as much as Stringer is for Tigers. Would have love to have seen both teams as full strength. Some of the old guard for the Tigers were convinced that missing a 3 year starter Sr RB was going to be irrelevant. They were wrong. I'm sure HC missed Perry every bit as much.
Voice of Reason Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 (edited) I forgot to bring my notepad tonight so I will do the best on the game report from memory. Beechwood received the opening kickoff and on the third play of the game Holy Cross intercepted a pass intended for Slusher. It was a heck of a play by the Holy Cross defender, who played Slusher well all night. I thought it was #27 Pardue who intercepted but again, I am going from memory. Holy Cross moved about 35 yards to a 1st and goal but Beechwood held. Then Holy Cross had a bad snap on the field goal try and came away with no points. Beechwood went three and out from deep in their own territory and punted. This time Holy Cross made the most of the short field and got the first TD of the game, 7-0. On the following kickoff, the Beechwood returner picked up the kickoff near the goal line, tried to scramble around then fumbled the ball into the end zone for a safety, 9-0. Holy Cross had another short field after the kickoff and return. They moved the ball down to the 25 but Beechwood held them on 4th down there. On Beechwood's first offensive play, they fumbled again. Once again the Tigers held. This possession, Beechwood was able to hold onto the ball and start making some plays. They moved down to the 36 where the Tigers took advantage of the stack the box, every play blitz defense by Holy Cross by rolling out right and throwing a backside pass play that caught Holy Cross off guard. Aiden Justice took the short pass from QB Kyle Fieger and ran it 36 yards for the score, 9-7. Holy Cross went 3 and out and this would become the theme for them the rest of the night. Beechwood's defense really hit their stride and kept Holy Cross in check the rest of the night. The Holy Cross punt was very short and this time it was Beechwood with a short field to work with on offense. Beechwood got to a 4th down and 10 play and completed a short pass to Lucas Benson that he was able to run to the sticks and get the first down. Then on the next play Benson caught a pass across the middle and dove into the end zone for a 20 yard TD that put the Tigers ahead 14-9 with 4:07 left in the half. Holy Cross had to punt after getting one first down. The Tigers were not able to get the 2 minute drill working and that is where the half ended. The theme of the game was set. Holy Cross stacked the box, played man coverage and blitzed every play. Fieger had no time to throw the ball and the Tigers were outmanned at the line of scrimmage, also shutting down the run game. On the other side, once Beechwood figured out that Holy Cross' main weapon was short passes and scrambles (or read option plays) by their QB Alec Greenwell, they made some adjustments, including change in personnel to put more speed on the field, and were able to control the Holy Cross offense. Beechwood's defense was well prepared and coached, snuffing out plays before Holy Cross could make them happen. We were in for a defensive battle the rest of the way with both offenses struggling to find anything. The second half opened with a 3 and out by Holy Cross. The quarter went back and forth with neither offense able to get anything done. Holy Cross was winning the field position battle, starting their drives just short of midfield and then pinning Beechwood back in their own territory for the start of their drives. That is how the game clinching drive started for Beechwood. They were pinned at their own 10 yard line. The Tigers moved Slusher to RB and handed him the ball. However, with the box stacked, even Slusher had trouble finding yards. The Tigers kept running the ball between the tackles where they were finding no room. After a couple handoffs and facing 3rd down, the Tigers moved Slusher back to WR and Fieger hit him with a pass for first down. The fourth quarter arrived with Beechwood sitting at their own 40. On the first play of the quarter, Slusher ran a quick slant, got a step on the defender, Fieger hit him in stride and no one was going to catch Slusher as he took it 60 yards for the score, 21-9 Beechwood. The drive started at the 10 and I believe Slusher accounted for all 90 yards on runs or receptions from Fieger. Now Holy Cross had to find something as time was running out. However, the Beechwood defense again was up to the task. There was a weird start to this possession though. Beechwood's four man rush was eating up the bigger, slower Holy Cross line and sacked Greenwell. On a 3rd and about 20, Greenwell was scrambling again near his own 10. He slipped through a tackle and the ref threw a flag for a facemask. Greenwell ran forward for 10 yards before finally being tackled 15 yards short of the first down. The official then stepped off a 15 yard facemask from the end of the run where Greenwell was tackled, 5 yards beyond where the ball was snapped and 10 yards from where the flag was thrown. Is that correct? Should this penalty be stepped off from the end of the play, not from where the play started and not from where the penalty occurred? Regardless of whether it was right, this gave Holy Cross a first down. But the Tigers defense was in control of this game and they stopped Holy Cross on downs at the 45. The Tigers ran three plays and were also forced to punt, with Slusher punting the ball and pinning Holy Cross down at their own 5 with good coverage by the Tigers punt team. Holy Cross hit one nice pass play. Then they looked to have another nice long completion but a big hit by Cameron Way knocked the ball out of the receiver's hands. The Tigers held on downs and had the ball with 3:48 to go. From there, they lined Slusher up at RB and handed him and FB Trevor Soward the ball to run out the clock and seal the victory. BigDaddy6 Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Stringer being out hurt tonight and will hurt down the road. It may end up hurting too much. We'll see.
Oldercoach Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Thanks EyeOfTheTiger for the recap. Your synopsis made my concern for Stringer's loss escalate, which was already off the charts. Afraid the smaller replacements will dictate some creativity will be needed by Rash down the road.
