Someone that I had some training with, who entered this type of field, tells me I can send him any photo that was taken with a phone or newer camera and he could tell me exactly where the photo was taken.

Remember that guy who created that PC virus removal company? That is how he was caught, he was taking photos of himself and updating a blog or whatever in Central America, they tracked him down that way.

Let's drop a bunch of free smartphones with unlimited voice and data all over there. Let them shoot away with selfies.

There's just no substitute for an enemy that's dumber than a bag of hammers.

I do agree and this question is for anyone but was the USA in a position where we had to tell how we tracked the guy/building down? If not, there are a couple of hammers in our bag too.

Absolutely correct. Why on earth would we let them exactly know how adept we are to identifying locations of photographs?

Too much of our military brass wants to puff out their chest and show how great of a job they're doing, when what they really need to do is close their office door, and silently smoke a damn fine stogie while they're sipping on a nice single-malt scotch with an ear-to-ear grin on their face.

This is a product of the 24/7 news cycle and the military's perceived need to "feed the beast".

"Had to"? Maybe not. But given how adept they've been at using social media to document their rise to power and turning into a recruitment tool, it's possible the U.S. military just took one of their favorite tools away.

"We can find you from your pictures. Still planning on taking that snapshot of this week's training exercises?"

I would much prefer us to walk softly and carry a big stick until the time comes when we declare to the world we have had enough. Then I prefer language like "cut them off and kill them."

That's "sort of" true.
