rockmom Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 Homeless man dies after being found on steps of shelter | Local News - Home The shelter had been working with him to try to find housing for him for months. My prayers are with his family, both biological and his family at St. John's. My heart is really heavy tonight hearing this. I know it is the worst fear of organizations in Louisville like Fed With Faith and Exit 0 in So. IN. They're out every night trying to find those in need and provide what they can and assist those who will, to go to a shelter.

I cannot imagine what it must be like to literally freeze to death...terrible.
rockmom Posted February 21, 2015 Author Posted February 21, 2015 I have a special place in my heart for the homeless. The issues that land them there are varied and complex. The road off the streets is almost insurmountable in many communities.
spindoc Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 Wave3 did a piece last night on a tent community of homeless and they offered to take them to the shelter and they refused. I guess I just don't get it.

I guess I just don't get it. You have to get to know these people to understand. Many of them cannot handle being around people in a normal setting. Some of them fear losing their possessions or their spot they call home. Most have mental disabilities and are not on meds.

I suppose, but surely they know the inherent dangers of these temps, in a tent no less.
rockmom Posted February 21, 2015 Author Posted February 21, 2015 It is hard for you and I to understand. We don't struggle with what they do. And again, mental illness is a wicked mistress. Reason isn't the same for someone with severe mental illness as for us.
tcjkbt Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 Many (most?) of the homeless are suffering from mental disorders or addiction.

There are real things to be paranoid about. Add on the paranoia of the mentally ill, and many would rather risk the streets.
rockmom Posted February 28, 2015 Author Posted February 28, 2015 Kenny was buried out off Dixie Highway this week. About 100 people attended the service. I am seeing a lot of op-eds and social media calling for several initiatives to address homelessness in Louisville. I hope that Kenny's death is the impetus of a movement similar to what happened when a 5 year old child died of starvation in Louisville several decades ago. That's when Dare to Care was created to help feed the poor, especially children and the elderly. RIP Kenny.

Beechwoodfan Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 I understand that, but at negative temps? I hate it, sad situation. Hard to believe, but I know it is true because I see it frequently at work. Sometimes people are so psychotic they don't register pain and discomfort like most people do, and/or their fears over-ride it. Very sad.
