Short fields for St. Xavier make long night for Central

 

Tigers cruise to 46-6 victory Friday night

Short fields helped the St. Xavier High School football team make short work of visiting Central as the Tigers cruised to a 46-6 victory Friday night.

 

Needing only 16:09 of possession time, the Tigers (4-2), the No. 9 team in The Courier-Journal’s Litkenhous Ratings, had touchdown drives of 3, 13, 21 and 23 yards. TaiJon Smith ran for 95 yards and two scores, and quarterback Noah Houk threw for two TDs and ran for one.

 

It was a stark contrast from last week’s performance, a 26-0 loss to Cincinnati Moeller. Practices took on a different tone this week after the Tigers failed to capitalize on some opportunities in the first half against Moeller.

 

“We were focused in practice,” said senior linebacker Trace Amshoff, who had one of St. X’s two interceptions. “We knew what we had to do.”

Even with archrival Trinity looming next week, the Tigers did not go into the game looking ahead. Coach Will Wolford said the team was “embarrassed,” especially by the way it played in the second half last week.

 

“The guys were a little surly, to say the least,” he said.

 

It showed against Class 3-A Central. Every time the Yellowjackets erred, the 6-A Tigers were quick to pounce.

 

When Central fumbled on the game’s first play from scrimmage, St. X recovered on the 21-yard line. On the next play Smith ran for a touchdown to make it 7-0 just 14 seconds into the game.

 

On the Tigers’ next possession, they benefited from three consecutive Central penalties — a facemask on the punt return, a pass-interference call and an encroachment flag — that put the ball at the Yellowjackets’ 7. Three plays later, Houk’s 3-yard draw made it 14-0.

 

St. X later capitalized on an interception by Jackie Arnold, which led to Smith’s second score, and a blocked punt by Clark Campbell, which set up Sam Taylor’s touchdown run. It was 40-0 with 3:22 left in the first half, and the game finished with a running clock.

 

Houk said his players were sick and tired of being physically beaten in games earlier this season.

 

“I put a huge burden on myself after the (Moeller) game,” the senior said. “I felt like we controlled the tempo in the first half. That really fueled us this week in practice.”

 

Central (3-3) finally broke through in the closing seconds, scoring on Stevon Beason’s 5-yard run.

 

The Yellowjackets get next weekend off, but just as the Tigers did this past week, coach Ty Scroggins said they’ll take a look at the game film and start correcting their mistakes in practices.

 

“They did a good job up front,” he said of St. X. “I’m not sure we’re going to see a team this big in 3-A football.”
