UK fball fan Posted September 20, 2014 Posted September 20, 2014 Alot of quality wins in 1a this year by several different teams. How'd you rank them after 5 weeks? I'll start. 1) Mayfield - A couple of lackluster weeks in a row for the Cards, but, still wins, and, still against quality opponents in Murray and Graves Co.. While I think the gap has closed abit, the Cards have still done enough to garner the #1 spot. 2) Williamsburg - Not the marque win as some other teams, but, Pike Central, Wayne Co and Newport are all quality wins and by solid margins. With nearly there whole team returning from a state runner-up team, I think the Jackets are a solid #2 at this time. 3) Pikeville - Beating a #1 ranked 3a team in Belfry is certainly a marque win. The Pirates are a power running team and played this game without there #1 and #2 RBs and had no passing game to force the Panthers to respect it and allowed them to stack the box. Not taking anything away from the win, but, that was certainly a factor. Still a tremendous win. The Hazard and P'Burg wins are also solid. A very solid #3. 4) Beechwood - The Tigers finally got a quality win and did it big over a ranked 5a team. The Flyers are a little overrated, but, a quality win, nonetheless. They definately deserve to overtake Frankfort by virtue of this weeks win compared to the Panthers loss to the same team last week. Still have some work to do to surpass the 3 ahead of them. 5) Frankfort - The Panthers got back on there winning ways this week and outside of Mayfield, have played the overall toughest schedule out of all the other 1a teams to maintain the #5 spot. 6) Hazard - The Bulldogs only loss this year was to #3 Pikeville in a tough, hard fought game. They also got a big win this week vs a better than advertised Fairview team. 7) Russellville - The Panthers are quietly having another stellar year, currently sitting undefeated, but, likely wn't be tested till Mayfield rolls into town in 4 weeks. A very athletic and well coached team with potential to make alot of noise. A solid #7. 8) Raceland - The Rams could easily be undefeated right now, but, do have a close loss to a reeling Ashland team. If they played again, I'd bet on the Rams. Albeit, a young team, these guys are proving that they can play and any 1a team would be making a mistake to take these guys lightly. Talented team with better days ahead. A solid #8. 9) Holy Cross - Outside of an opening whitewashing at the hands of #1 ranked 2a Desales, the Crusaders have been solid. I wouldn't put much stock in the Colt loss, as , most all of there opponents have suffered similar fates. HC looks to be rebounding nicely after a couple of rough seasons. 10) Fairview - This was a tough call, but, imo, the best of the rest. A close loss to undefeated 3a Lawrence Co is better than any other teams wins or losses in the discussion. Other teams considered : Paintsville, Bethlehem, Paris, Pineville, Campbellsville..
mcpapa Posted September 20, 2014 Posted September 20, 2014 Good summary and food for thought. 1A definitely made a couple of statements last night.
hrcarrier Posted September 20, 2014 Posted September 20, 2014 I think the top four, maybe five is very good and better than a lot were anticipating. The state semis should be fun based on what's happened so far. My top five goes: 1) Mayfield ( someone has to beat them) 2) Pikeville (hard to disagree after beating Belfry) 3) Beechwood (Whether Franklin County is down or not, very solid win that a lot didn't expect) 4) Williamsburg 5) Frankfort
JDEaston Posted September 20, 2014 Posted September 20, 2014 I expect you may see Raceland move up some throughout the season, they have a balanced offence and a good defense. I think they may surprise some teams when the postseason comes around. I doubt you will hear any complaints out of the Raceland fans about being ranked #8. They are a pretty humble and intelligent group that I believe likes to have the proverbial 'chip on their shoulder.'
Imhisdad Posted September 20, 2014 Posted September 20, 2014 It's Mayfield, Beechwood, and the rest. Disagree about your scheduling comment, these two schools hands down have played the toughest schedule. Mt Healthy is the real deal-a D2 Ohio team that went deep in playoffs last year-BW almost got them, and Dixie is a big strong 6a team with several next level players on it. Every team on the list would have 2 losses had they played those two schools. IMO the Tigers will avenge last years loss to Frankfort and prove it was the exception rather than the rule.
75center Posted September 20, 2014 Posted September 20, 2014 No way to overlook Pikeville's win over Belfry. Possibly the most impressive Class A win this year?
truecardinalfan Posted September 20, 2014 Posted September 20, 2014 With the comment above that the #1 AND #2 runningbacks were out at Belfry...takes away substantially from Pikevilles win.
snakesnot_2000 Posted September 20, 2014 Posted September 20, 2014 No class 1A team has played a schedule as tough as Mayfields. BW has played the next best. Pikeville did have a signature win against Belfry. My statement is this " its going to take a heck of a 1A team to beat Mayfield".
hrcarrier Posted September 20, 2014 Posted September 20, 2014 No way to overlook Pikeville's win over Belfry. Possibly the most impressive Class A win this year? I agree. Plenty know but some may not; Belfry is flat out tough and really good. They beat Henry Clay this season and did it in beat down fashion. IMO, this is clearly the most impressive 1A win of the season at this point.
Bac2369 Posted September 21, 2014 Posted September 21, 2014 1 Mayfield 2 Williamsburg 3 Pikeville 4 Beechwood 5 Frankfort 6 Hazard 7 Russellville 8 Raceland 9 Holy Cross 10 Campbellsville I think 2-8 could all beat each other on any given day. But Mayfield is still number 1 and everyone is chasing them and this is the year to get them before they enter 2A.
sidelinedoc Posted September 21, 2014 Posted September 21, 2014 I agree with the top 10 to date..... I hope to see Raceland climb through these teams in about 6 weeks.
Little Ram Posted September 21, 2014 Posted September 21, 2014 I agree with the top 10 to date..... I hope to see Raceland climb through these teams in about 6 weeks. Some of the players said "We are glad we are ranked low. Makes us hungry. Makes us play to prove people wrong." An amazing quote from some of the Raceland players. We have work to do.
FanofMany Posted September 21, 2014 Posted September 21, 2014 I'm not sold on Williamsburg. I think their schedule is the weakest of the top 4.
Voice of Reason Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 No class 1A team has played a schedule as tough as Mayfields. BW has played the next best. HT721 Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 I'm not sold on Williamsburg. I think their schedule is the weakest of the top 4. They are the team to beat in the East until proven otherwise. Returned all but one starter on a team that beat everyone in the East by at least 2 touchdowns last year. They also picked up the Harlan Central running back this year. Can they compete with Mayfield, I'm not sure but they are the top team in the East until someone beats them.
