Qryche11 Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 One of the greatest comeback victories ever for the Tigers. Bellevue wins 20-14 in OT. Trailing 14-6 with just over a minute to play Tiger Sr QB Mike Roa engineered a final drive with 5 straight completions to give the Tigers a chance to tie the game with the conversion. I was a frosh this season on the sideline and this was a great game. Dayton had some great athletes that year. Rod Klette, Lonnie Jourdan, Donny Claybern. Bellevue had LB Kevin Apted, RB Brian Veatch, WR Bobby Ferguson. Great stuff. Game was called by Gary Ball and Kevin Rengering. Part 2 of this showing the OT portion is the link below the video. Harry Doyle Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Great stuff. I can watch these clips all day long, no matter the schools. Question? When did Bellevue decide to put the Wings on their helmets? Any idea? ...they were going up tempo from Split Backs (no clue if this was a true two-minute drill or not, but nonetheless)....if people don't love that, we simply can't get along.:clap:
Qryche11 Posted September 9, 2014 Author Posted September 9, 2014 I believe they went to the wings in 1991, cant be confirmed. They dabbled with them in 1983 but only for a year. This was a 2 minute drill for sure. I was a QB on the Bellevue Frosh team that year, we only had 12 kids on our roster, aka Dirty Dozen. We ran the same offense. I remember those pass plays like they were yesterday. We called the quick outs Black 10/82. I ended up throwing a lot my soph year to Bobby Ferguson. He had blazing speed, track star. Coach Dan Hill went against traditional Bellevue grind it out run offenses of the past with the Sutkamps. We used to throw the ball a lot. Bryan Veatch #41 was a versatile back who could lay a lick on ya. #63 Kevin Apted was a beast. #10 Mike Roa was the toughest QB I ever saw play HS football. He would tuck it and run hoping to find contact. The Bellevue/Dayton rivalry is one of the best in the state.

[video=youtube_share;FO1BR6HQedA] Thanks for bring up some names from the past. :thumb: Brian Veatch lived in my neighborhood growing up, played baseball and football with him, back in the day as grade schoolers, along with his next door neighbor Mike Schuett (Bellevue & Highlands). I should mention everybody liked hanging at Brian and Mike's swimming pools because they both had "hot" sisters. :lol2: Ferguson was "lightning" quick and Mike Roa was tough as nails. Also, always enjoyed listening to Ball and Rengering calling games. :thumb:
Lawnboy13 Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 The pass defense of Dayton on that final drive of regulation reminds my of a "certain" teams pass "D" the last couple of years. :sssh:
gchs_uk9 Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Gary Ball doesn't sound one bit different today than he did 30 years ago!
Lawnboy13 Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Gary Ball doesn't sound one bit different today than he did 30 years ago! Agree, now Kevin......:sssh: :lol2: At 1st I thought, no way that's him. Wait till I text him and tell him to checkout youtube.
Sandman Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Great stuff. Highly enjoyable. I don't remember all the names, but certainly remember some.
Qryche11 Posted September 9, 2014 Author Posted September 9, 2014 I have a contact that has access to every game broadcast that year 1985. It was the last year they did it. If anyone is interested in buying DVD's of any games that were scheduled inbox me. I can get you the guy's email address.

I thought they had that back in the 70s
Qryche11 Posted September 9, 2014 Author Posted September 9, 2014 are you talking about the Michigan look? I thought they had that back in the 70s As far as I know Bellevue's first experience with that was 1983 when Steve Crittendon and Doug Miller were Sr's. It only lasted one year and then was brought back in 1991 when they were state runnerup with David Kiefer, Brad Hissong, Tommy Vickers, Wayne Hall, etc.
Ram Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 are you talking about the Michigan look? I thought they had that back in the 70s The winged helmet was experimented with in college, but Herbert Crisler is often given credit for it's popularity when he used it at Princeton and then when he went to Michigan. Now, I thought I read on here once that one of Crisler's coaches, or supporters, came to Bellevue years ago and started using it then. If anyone has a history of the Bellevue Winged Helmet, I would love to hear it again.
Qryche11 Posted September 10, 2014 Author Posted September 10, 2014 See above, I went there and played there. I'm about 95% sure.
Ram Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 See above, I went there and played there. I'm about 95% sure. I'm sure you know more about then I do, I just thought I had read a thread on here a few years back that said they started using it the 60's or something. Probably just my imagination.
