jericho
I doubt anyone cares but 2 colleges have books that each year the whole school has to read. This year it is 2 different books about being gay or growing up gay. A few students objected to having to read it and asked for an alternative. Schools said no. The Pres. said. In response to the controversy, the College of Charleston’s president said the school has the right to introduce controversial ideas to students, adding their students are adults whom the school treats as such But if adults shouldnt adults have a choice. TheDeuce
They do have a choice... Read the books, or take a bad grade (if that's how they would be penalized).

Isnt it funny though how it seems that the gay agenda is being pushed on people. Dont you think a college student should have a choice of what they read? It isnt like its a class or anything they can drop if they dont agree.

You just have to read the book and I assume prove you read the book in some form. (paper, test, etc.) When you were in school did you not have to read books you didn't agree with or didn't like? UKMustangFan
:ohbrother: When I was in college we had to read Wicked and Harry Potter. I guess they were pushing witchcraft down my throat. I had to read Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn too. I don't agree with the enslavement of other people. Were they pushing slavery down my throat?
UKMustangFan
They do have a choice... Read the books, or take a bad grade (if that's how they would be penalized). Pretty simple. If they don't agree with it, or feel it's "pushing it down their throat", I'd assume they'd have no problem not reading it, and taking whatever penalty (grade-wise) that came with it. :idunno:

College or not, it is very rare (in my experiences) that you had a choice of what to read for school. Sure there were a couple times, but for the majority, you had to read whatever the teacher/school assigned you. The one exception would be book reports when I was young, but I don't really count that. If it's that big of an issue to students, they can transfer. I think making an uproar like this is beyond immature. JMO.
75center
What's with adults who can't even read about something they may not agree with? Isn't college about exposing students to broader opportunities, including being exposed to something you might not otherwise learn about. Isn't collega all about education? I'm more concerned about the SC House of Rep actions.
Bert
I don't really have a problem with this assignment but I will just play Devil's Advocate. If watching, discussing and writing a paper on the 1920's film Birth of a Nation was required, would students offended by its racial tone be justified? stickymitts
Just add them to the list of unemployable college graduates. Guess what, you may have a gay coworker. You may, God forbid, have a gay boss. Hell, you may even learn something. Quit your crying and read the books. Ridiculous.

A college professor made me read "The Fire Next Time" my sophomore year; turned me black and gay for most of my early 20s...

I watched it in a film studies course in college. It's a really interesting tool for talking about that line of thinking; it was also interesting to read criticisms of it that were released at the time. Even in 1915 it was hugely scandalous in most of the country. He wrote and directed a movie called "Intolerance" the very next year in an attempt to calm the outrage over "Birth of a Nation."
