A 1991 KHSAA Hall of Fame Inductee, Walter Brugh, head football coach at Paintsville from 1956 through 1994, retired after having compiled a record of more wins than any other high school coach in the state. Sad day in Paintsville.

Hate to hear that. I remember when Coach Brugh was the leader in coaching wins in KY. I know he was loved by his former players and he will be missed by the Tiger faithful. RIP Coach Brugh.

When I played at Raceland, Paintsville was the big district rival, Coach Brugh was at the helm. Over the years, I have a lot of conversations about Coach Brugh with coaches and players. Great man, Great Coach. He will be remembered for a long time.

Ram mentioned about the time, years and the Raceland / Paintsville games. I can certainly remember that game being as big of rivalry as there was in NEKY/EKY. Brugh was obviously a great coach, his Paintsville teams in the 70's and 80's were as good as any, better than most regardless of Class (1A, 2, 3, etc.). Raceland coaches Larry Heck, Roger Snyder up through the Bill Tom Ross years had some real battles with Paintsville. Brugh's Tigers were always the best team on the schedule. Coach Brugh was known as the "Blue Legend" in EKY.

I went on too much about football and what I was getting at was the man. I have had more than one Raceland coach, boosters or whoever got to know the man say what a fine person Walter Brugh was.

Prayers for comfort to the Brugh family, Paintsville h.s. family and friends.

Paintsville's Walter Brugh, one of Kentucky high school football's winningest coaches, died Tuesday night. He was 87.

Mr. Brugh played for Paintsville in the 1940s, became a Tigers assistant in the early 1950s and took over as head coach in 1956. When he retired after the 1994 season, Mr. Brugh was the state's all-time wins leader with a career record of 279-136-5.

"He's a legend in this town," said Paintsville basketball coach Bill Mike Run yon, who played football for Mr. Brugh and was an assistant under him for 23 years.

"Growing up as a kid here, one thing parents required of you was to play football for Coach Brugh. Whatever he said, your parents agreed with him. There was no second-guessing him."

Please go to the link and read the rest of the article. It is short and Mike Fields did a great job.

Coach Brugh is certainly a legend!

And I loved this part:

"Growing up as a kid here, one thing parents required of you was to play football for Coach Brugh. Whatever he said, your parents agreed with him. There was no second-guessing him."

Coach Brugh is a legend. He exemplifies what high school football should be.

He came over to personally shake my hand at Paintsville. Made a lasting impression on me.

He's probably one of the few guys that could catch you, simply because he would not have stopped until he did.

Great men do those little things that people don't think about. I can't define class, and it's sometimes overused, but I know it when I see it. Coach Brugh was that definition.
