The ratings use avg. margin of victory applied to avg. strength of schedule played. There is a cap of 40 pts on margin of victory for teams that have ratings within 40 points of each other, so teams don't benefit from running up the score. Also, teams that play an opponent that is over 40 pts less in the ratings will not be hurt by running clock or putting reserves in.
