    Greyhound (2020 Film)

This is one I plan on seeing. I remembered seeing something somewhere online a couple of years ago about Hanks working on another WWII film, but didn't hear anything else until I saw this trailer this morning.

I actually read the book this movie is based on when I was maybe 13 or 14...it's about a destroyer that acted as a submarine hunter in the Atlantic in WWII. I read it because my grandfather was on a destroyer in the Pacific in WWII - the USS Meade - the only US destroyer to survive Guadalcanal. After Guadalcanal a lot of what they did was submarine hunting, which is what made me decide to read the book. Calling this movie "inspired by actual events" like they do in the trailer is a little bit of a stretch. I guess you could say that, yes, there were destroyers that hunted submarines in the Atlantic in WWII, and in that regard, this is based on actual events. I guess that makes every historic fiction "inspired by actual events."

Knowing that this is a fictional story makes this one easier for me. They used the USS Kidd for the shooting but the only thing is that the Fletcher Class DDs did not serve much in the Atlantic, they were much more prevalent in the Pacific Theater of the war. A Benson class DD would make more sense for this but none exist so using one that is semi-contemporary works.

That said I have more faith in a Tom Hanks film being accurate to details than anyone else, so I'll see this one at some point.

My grandfather's destroyer was a Benson Class. He was on it when they commissioned it in the Brooklyn Navy Yard in June 1942 steamed south down to the Panama Canal and headed promptly to Guadalcanal. Spent time in basically ever part of the Pacific, from the South Pacific up into the Arctic Circle.

That's quite the tour of duty.

Yeah, that looks awesome and definitely right up my alley. WWII and Tom Hanks, it doesn't get much better.

We don't go to the theaters all that often these days but I have to believe we will for that.
