  1. Bluegrasspreps.com is giving you a chance to demonstrate your basketball expertise statewide! The Bluegrasspreps Regional Pick 'em contests give you opportunities to pick games in different parts of the state for prizes EACH WEEK. There will be five regional contests every week. You will have a chance to pick the winners in each region -- NKY, EKY, Bluegrass, Louisville, and WKY. This is the EKY contest. The Eastern Kentucky Contest is Sponsored by YOUR BUSINESS HERE. Contact theguru at theguru@fuse.net for details Each region will have five games to pick from each week. We pick the games, and you will pick the winner of each game, assigning your picks a point value of 7-5-3-2-1. The first tiebreaker is picking the team (of the ten teams in the contest) that scores the most points. You don't have to pick the highest scoring team, you just have to pick a team that scores more points than the team(s) picked by the member(s) you are tied with. The second tiebreaker is time. Early bird gets the worm if the contest comes down to the second tiebreaker. This is a season long contest and you can enter in any or all regions that you wish. At the end of the regular season, the top two contestants will compete during the special Sweet 16 Contest for statewide bragging rights on Bluegrasspreps and a grand prize. If you win more than one position in the postseason playoff, then your second slot will go to the next contestant in order.. The more contests you enter, the better your chances of qualifying for the Sweet 16 Contest. If you win a weekly contest, you will receive a quality prize. Check here for a reference. The deadline for all entries is 5 p.m. (ET) Friday. Make sure you post your winners and assign each of them one of the following point values (7-5-3-2-1) based on how strongly you feel that that team will win.(Please note that if your selections are NOT in the specified format, your ENTIRE set of picks will be voided) 7 5 3 2 1 1st Tiebreaker: Team scoring the most points. 2nd Tiebreaker: Time of post. The Week 2 games are: Menifee County @ Bath County Powell County vs. Frankfort Johnson Central vs. Rowan County Henry Clay vs. Pulaski County Perry Central @ Harlan County
  2. Wayne County enters off an impressive 55-0 pasting of fringe 5A team North Laurel, while Perry County Central brings a spotless record and healthy 49 PPG average into the contest. Last season the Cardinals knocked off PCC 56-8 at home, starting what would become an 8 game losing streak for the Commodores. What does the 2016 matchup hold for us?
  3. Knott County Central (30-6): The Patriots rolled through the 14th region tourney last year winning all three games in the tourney by 15+ including Perry County Central in the regional championship. The Patriots defeated Clay County 68-54 and went on to the second round to face, eventual state runner-up, Ballard Bruins, Ballard defeated Knott County Central 68-53. Knott County Central will be king of the 14th region until they are beaten and 2013/14 shouldn’t be no different. Key Returnees: Trenton Jenkins (10.5 PPG, 6.1 RPG), Trevor Jenkins (11.5 PPG, 35.3% from 3), Kris Dennis (4.0 PPG, 3.0 RPG), Caleb Click (1.7 PPG, 1.7 RPG), Trevor Jones (DNP / ACL) Schedule: 12/3 Hazard, 12/6 Lee County, 12/7 Bart Rison Classic @ Montgomery County (Estill vs. South Laurel), 12/10 Wolfe County, 12/13 @ Jackson City, 12/16 @ Rockcastle County, 12/17 @ Madison Southern, 12/19-22 Berea Invitational Tournament (Estill vs. Somerset 12/19), 12/26-28 Red River Classic @ Powell County (Estill vs. Anderson County 12/26), 1/3 @ Lee County, 1/7 @ Powell County, 1/10 @ Owsley County, 1/14 Mercer County, 1/17 Jackson City, 1/24 Powell County, 1/25 Letcher County Central, 1/27 Model, 1/28 Lewis County, 1/31 Owsley County, 2/1 @ Wolfe County, 2/4 @ Buckhorn, 2/11 @ Harrison County, 2/14 @ Berea, 2/17 @ Menifee County, 2/21 Somerset. Powell County (9-20): After upsetting Owsley County in the first round of the district tournament last season, the Pirates went on to lose the district championship to Estill County (on a last second shot) then went on to the regional tournament where they faced off against Perry County Central in the first round. Perry County Central would go on to win that game 81-65. The Pirates are hoping for a better 2013/14 season then they had in 2012/13 and hoping they can get back to the regional tournament. Key Losses: Trey Marcum (17.7 PPG, 38% from 3), Kyle Lacy (7.5 PPG), Aaron Townsend (5.2 PPG), John Hubbard (6.5 PPG). Key Returnees: Brett Godwin (14.4 PPG, 6.2 RPG), Caleb McCoy (6.9 PPG), Austin Mullins (4.9 PPG). Breathitt County (17-13): The Bobcats won their third consecutive district championship last season to advance to the regional tournament where they faced Cordia in the first round. That game didn’t go as well as Breathitt County was hoping for as the Bobcats fell to the Cordia Lions 52-42. With the talent Breathitt County lost due to graduation last season and a new head coach, the Bobcats are hoping they have enough to get back to the regional tournament. Senior Wes Noble will be the guy that leads this Breathitt team. Key Losses: Trevor Hays, Ryan Cox, Alex Hamilton, Dillion Chaney Key Returnees: Wes Noble Schedule: 12/3 @ Perry County Central, 12/12 Lawrence County, 12/14 KY Bank Classic @ Bourbon County (Breathitt vs. Paris), 12/17 @ Buckhorn, 12/20-22 Hyden Citizens Bank Shootout @ Leslie County, 12/26-28 TECO Coal Commodore Classic @ Perry County Central, 12/30 @ Jackson City, 1/3 Wolfe County, 1/7 @ Owsley County, 1/14 @ Powell County, 1/21 Hazard, 1/24 Leslie County, 1/31-2/1 KY Prep Showcase (Breathitt vs. Shelby Valley 1/31) (Breathitt vs. Johnson Central 2/1), 2/3 @ Wolfe County, 2/4 @ Lee County, 2/6 June Buchanan, 2/8 Jackson City, 2/11 Powell County, 2/13 @ Letcher County Central, 2/17 Harlan County, 2/18 Owsley County, 2/20 @ Hazard, 2/22 @ Riverside Christian Wolfe County (16-14): The Wolves lost the 55th district championship for the third consecutive year but advanced to the regional tournament, where they faced off against Estill County, a team that Wolfe County had defeated 56-44 earlier in the year, however this would not be the case as Estill County would defeat Wolfe County 52-42 to advance to the semi-finals of the regional tournament. Wolfe County returns nearly their entire team, only losing Brett Denniston, who graduated and John Toomer who transferred to Perry County Central. This year’s Wolfe County team will be pretty solid. Key Losses: Brett Denniston (0.6 PPG), John Toomer (9.4 PPG) (Transferred to Perry County Central) Key Returnees: Corey Conway (9.8 PPG), Garrett Dunn (7.0 PPG), Jeffrey Terrill (11.7 PPG, 7.3 RPG), Bradley Lawson (13.3 PPG), Marshall Willoughby (5.8 PPG, 4.3 RPG) Schedule: 12/3 @ Lee County, 12/6 Leslie County, 12/10 @ Estill County, 12/13 Jackson County, 12/14 KY Bank Classic @ Bourbon County (Wolfe vs. Anderson County), 12/17 Jackson City, 12/23 Elliott County, 12/26-28 Red River Classic @ Powell County (Wolfe vs. Tates Creek 12/26), 1/3 @ Breathitt County, 1/7 Buckhorn, 1/10 @ Jackson City, 1/13 14th Region All “A” Classic (Wolfe vs. Hazard), 1/21, Powell County, 1/24 Paintsville, 1/25 Owsley County, 1/28 @ Perry County Central, 2/1 Estill County, 2/3 Breathitt County, 2/7 @ Model, 2/11 Hazard, 2/13 @ Sayre, 2/15 @ Owsley County, 2/18 @ Powell County, 2/21 Lee County Leslie County (11-19): Leslie County defeated Buckhorn in the first round of the 54th district tournament to advance to the district championship and to the regional tournament. Leslie County would face Perry County Central for the 54th district championship where they would lose to the Commodores 63-44. Leslie County would go on to the regional tournament to face Knott County Central in the first round, that game didn’t bold well for the Eagles neither as Knott County Central would roll past Leslie County 71-37. Leslie County lost a lot of talent from last year’s team without much returning, should be a long, tough year for the Eagles. Key Losses: Blake Bray (5.6 PPG), Austin Sizemore (11.8 PPG), Arlin Couch (15.4 PPG) Key Returnees: Blake Asher (8.5 PPG), Josh Bray (3.7 PPG), Trystan Collect (5.4 PPG) Schedule: 12/3 Powell County, 12/6 @ Wolfe County, 12/7 Menifee County, 12/10 @ Buckhorn, 12/12 @ Oneida Baptist Institute, 12/16 Owsley County, 12/20-22 Hyden Citizens Bank Shootout @ Leslie County, 12/26-28 Nelson County Holiday Classic, 1/2 @ Harlan, ¼ @ Pike County Central, 1/6 @ Allen Central, 1/7 @ Jackson City, 1/10 Whitley County, 1/14 14th Region All “A” Classic (Leslie vs. June Buchanan), 1/21 June Buchanan, 1/24 @ Breathitt County, 1/27 Buckhorn, 1/31 @ Middlesboro, 2/3 Riverside Christian, 2/7 @ Jenkins, 2/11 Barbourville, 2/14 Lee County, 2/15 Knox Central, 2/18 Jackson City, 2/21 @ Owsley County. Hazard (23-6): The Bulldogs lost to Perry County Central 50-42 in the first round of the 54th district tournament, ending their season without a regional tourney appearance. With most of Hazard’s top players returning and the 54th district tournament going back to seeding, instead of the blind draw, Hazard should find themselves back in the regional tourney. Key Losses: Jordan Olinger (7.9 PPG), 7.3 RPG), Jarrod Combs (3.2 PPG), Tyler Triplett (4.1 PPG, 2.4 RPG), Evan Whitaker (9.0 PPG, 4.3 RPG) Key Returnees: Chris Hudson (13.1 PPG, 6.2 RPG), Josh Hollan (11.3 PPG), Collier Mobelini (7.0 PPG), Matt Thompson (6.2 PPG) Schedule: 12/3 @ Estill County, 12/5 Owsley County, 12/7 Pikeville, 12/9 Shelby Valley, 12/10 Lee County, 12/13 @ Perry County Central, 12/17 Knott County Central, 12/20 Buckhorn, 12/26-30 Republic Bank Classic @ Lexington Catholic, 1/2 @ June Buchanan, 1/7 WYMT Classic @ Knott County Central, 1/13 14th Region All “A” Classic (Hazard vs. Wolfe), 1/21 @ Breathitt County, 1/25 @ Paris, 1/30 Oneida Baptist Institute, 2/1 Pulaski County, 2/4 Letcher County Central, 2/7 Perry County Central, 2/11 @ Wolfe County, 2/14 Jackson City, 2/15 @ Shelby Valley, 2/18 Jenkins, 2/20 Breathitt County, 2-21 @ Powell County Buckhorn (15-15): Buckhorn saw it’s season come to an end last year with a 50-49 loss to Leslie County in the first round of the district tourney. Much like Hazard, with most of Buckhorn’s talent returning, the Wildcats should have a better season than last year and could potentially upset either Perry Central or Hazard to sneak into the regional tournament. Key returnees: Connor Hoskins, Richard Stidham, Caleb Estep Schedule: 12/3 @ Owsley County, 12/5 @ Cordia, 12/7 Wirewille Classic @ Berea College (Buckhorn vs. Berea), 12/9 Jackson City, 12/10 Leslie County, 12/13 @ Harlan, 12/17 Breathitt County, 12/20 @ Hazard, 12/27-30 Walton Sun Blowout @ Walton Beach Florida, 1/3 @ Shelby Valley, 1/4 @ Jackson City, 1/7 @ Wolfe County, 1/12 14th Region All “A” Classic (Buckhorn vs. Owsley), 1/21 Knott County Central, 1/24 Shelby Valley, 1/27 @ Leslie County, 1/28 Powell County, 1/31 @ Lee County, 2/4 Estill County, 2/7 @ Powell County, 2/8 Scott Blank Classic @ Buckhorn (OBI @ Buckhorn), 2/13 @ June Buchanan, 2/18 @ Letcher County Central, 2/20 Jenkins Letcher County Central (16-12): The Cougars failed to make it to the regional tournament last year, at their own home place. Letcher County Central’s season came to an end in the first round of the district tournament to Cordia 73-43 (@ Knott County Central). Letcher County Central lost several key players from last year’s team that will be missed. Letcher County Central will be lead by seniors Chippy Frazier and Josh Owens, the rest of Letcher County Central’s team will be young and inexpierenced. Key Losses: Cody Gregory (14th region player of the year in 2012/13), Sam Robinson (transferred to OBI due to dad getting the principal job), Dylan Kincer (quitting basketball to focus on baseball) Key Returnees: Chippy Frazier, Josh Owens Schedule: 12/3 Harlan County, 12/5 Jackson City, 12/6 Big Red Shootout at Clay County (Letcher vs. Corbin), 12/12 Phelps, 12/14, 12/14 @ Belfry, 12/17 @ South Floyd, 12/19-21 Smokey Mountain Classic @ Gatlinburg TN, 12/26-30 Pikeville Invitational Tournament @ Pikeville, 1/2 @ Knott County Central, 1/4 Union VA, 1/6 @ June Buchanan, 1/10 Jenkins, 1/11 Prestonsburg, 1/16 Pikeville, 1/17 June Buchanan, 1/21 Cordia, 1/23 Perry County Central, 1/25 @ Estill County, 1/28 Knott County Central, 1/31 @ Jenkins, 2/1 KY Prep Showcase (Letcher vs. Lee County), 2/4 @ Hazard, 2/7 @ Cordia, 2/13 Breathitt County, 2/18 Buckhorn, 2/20 Pike County Central. Owsley County (12-17): Owsley County saw their season come to an end last year in the first round of the 56th district tournament to Powell County 72-69. Owsley County had defeated the Pirates twice earlier in the year and had the one seed going into the district tournament due to a 3-way draw between Estill County, Lee County and Owsley County. Owsley County did lose their big man in Izaiah Allan who averaged 16.9 points per game and 13.4 rebounds per game last season but the Owls return the majority of their team that should make for a better season in 2013/14 and contend for a district championship and a regional appearance. Key Returnees: Joey Grove (13.4 PPG, 6.6 RPG), Noah Shelby (14.9 PPG), Bradon Mason (3.7 PPG), Cody Hall (7.3 PPG), Bill Hall (3.1 PPG), Adam Holmes (2.3 PPG, 4.5 RPG) Schedule: 12/3 Buckhorn, 12/5 @ Hazard, 12/7 PRTC Classic @ Jackson County (Owsley @ Jackson County), 12/10 @ Powell County, 12/13 Lee County, 12/16 @ Leslie County, 12/19-22 Berea Invitational Tournament @ Berea (Owsley vs. Franklin County 12/20), 1/3 Perry County Central, 1/4 @ North Laurel, 1/7 Breathitt County, 1/10 Estill County, 1/12 14th Region All “A” Classic (Owsley vs. Buckhorn), 1/21 @ Lee County, 1/24 Red Bird, 1/25 @ Wolfe County, 1/27 Riverside Christian, 1/31 @ Estill County, 2/1 KY Prep Showcase (Owsley vs. Harlan County), 2/4 Powell County, 2/7 Jackson County, 2/10 @ Riverside Christian, 2/14 @ Magoffin County, 2/15 Wolfe County, 2/18 @ Breathitt County, 2/21 Leslie County. Lee County (14-10): Lee County saw their season come to an end last year in the first round of the district tournament to Estill County 51-49. With a new head coach and a team that lost the majority of it’s scoring from a year ago, Lee County will be in rebuilding mode in 2013/14. Key Losses: Tyler Evans (20.5 PPG, 6.2 RPG), Blake Gabbard (11 PPG), Clint Cox (10.5 PPG), James Gilbert (5.9 PPG), Brant Cornelius (6.4 PPG), Chris Stamper (1.5 PPG), TJ Traylor.
