  1. Johnson Central makes a rare opening week appearance, eschewing their usual by week out of the gate. The back to back 4A runners-up dropped their season opener a season ago, but didn't lose again until the state finals. They'll meet a Lafayette team that almost completely reversed that script - winning their season opener but then losing the next ten contests. Is this as mismatched as that sounds?
  2. The Golden Eagles bounced back from their loss to Capital, notching a somewhat closer than expected 33-21 victory over Henry Clay. They entertain another West Virginia team in South Charleston. South Charleston is not as highly regarded as the Capital team that beat Johnson Central, but is still rated by the computers as among the top 25 in the state. Johnson Central has beaten them the past two years, will they add a third?
  3. This week the Golden Eagles begin their pursuit of a fourth straight title game appearance and second state championship after playing a scrimmage against Beechwood last week. Johnson Central was pushed in a 31-20 decision a year ago against Capital, but took their second straight season opener against Capital. In fact, Johnson Central hasn't lost a season opener since falling to Boyle County in 2010. Does the streak continue?
  4. It's the one you've been waiting for - the game of the year in 4A. Ashland enters at 9-0, and are seeking their first unbeaten regular season since 1975. They're averaging just over 39 points per game, and the 21 they gave up to Greenup County last week was their most allowed since August. They stunned everyone a year ago in knocking off Johnson Central 21-18 in the regular season finale, before falling in the playoffs to them 54-27 - their lone blemish in the past 19 games. Meanwhile Johhnson Central is 7-1, and remain unbeaten against teams from the state of Kentucky. Their win over Henry Clay is better than any on Ashland's schedule, and they have not scored less than 33 points since their loss in the season opener - they haven't scored less than 43 since the second game of the year. Importantly, they have the game at home, where they haven't lost to an in-state team since 2016. Ashland hasn't won there since 2001. Even with Franklin-Simpson in between them, the winner of this game will have a strong argument for #1 in the class, and it is very anticipated that this is the first of two meetings. Who takes round 1?
  5. Johnson Central hosts Greenup County in a district contest this Friday, entering the game on a five game winning streak. The Golden Eagles have yet to lose to a team from Kentucky, and haven't dropped a home game to an in-state team since 2016. They've been particularly hard on Greenup County, taking all nine contests against the Musketeers since they became district-mates in 2011. Greenup has a healthy 5-2 record and a win here would be a huge get for the program. Can they do anything to pull the upset?
  6. It's the grudge match we all expected, meeting for the third straight year in the finals after splitting the previous two. These two teams have spent the entire year ranked #1 and #2. Franklin-Simpson is looking for back to back titles while Johnson Central is looking for their second title in their fourth straight title game appearance. The Golden Eagles have won 13 in a row, are undefeated against teams from Kentucky, and have not scored less than 50 points in the playoffs. Franklin-Simpson has won 11 in a row - their lone loss to an undefeated South Warren team that is in the 5A title game - but they have been pushed in the playoffs, winning a nail-biter 12-10 over Madisonville-North Hopkins in the region finals. Both of these teams have championship pedigrees. This is the title game we deserved. Who brings home the title?
  7. One month ago, Knox Central lost their favorite status in Region 3 with a 42-20 loss at Franklin County. 35 days later, with homefield advantage on their side, they took down a 13-7 overtime result in the rematch to win their first region title ever. Their reward? A Johnson Central team that has not lost to a Kentucky team all year, riding a 12 game winning streak, and fresh off of splattering #3 Ashland by a 50-14 result. Johnson Central has not lost at home in two years, and no 4A squad has won at Johnson Central since 2014. You might say the Golden Eagles are a pretty solid favorite. Can Knox Central pull off the upset of all upsets?
  8. #1 Johnson Central continues to roll, putting a running clock on Boyd County last week for their third straight 40+ point game. East Carter enters at 3-2 but having lost two straight, including allowing 61 to Greenup County a week ago. Last year Johnson Central cruised 59-0. How wide a margin this time?
  9. The Golden Eagle offense is rolling now, topping 43 points in each of their last two games, and knocking off previously unbeaten Moore 49-21 last week. This week they open district play on the road at Boyd County. Boyd suffered a 49-0 blowout loss at Russell last week, and enters at 2-2. Johnson Central rolled 58-0 a year ago, they haven't allowed a score by the Lions since 2015, and they've won ten straight matchups since Boyd County's last series win in 2002. Suffice it to say, this is a mismatch. How bad does this get?
  10. Bluegrasspreps.com is giving you a chance to demonstrate your basketball expertise statewide! The Bluegrasspreps Regional Pick 'em contests give you opportunities to pick games in different parts of the state for prizes EACH WEEK. There will be five regional contests every week. You will have a chance to pick the winners in each region -- NKY, EKY, Bluegrass, Louisville, and WKY. This is the EKY contest. The Eastern Kentucky Contest is Sponsored by YOUR BUSINESS HERE. Contact theguru at theguru@fuse.net for details Each region will have five games to pick from each week. We pick the games, and you will pick the winner of each game, assigning your picks a point value of 7-5-3-2-1. The first tiebreaker is picking the team (of the ten teams in the contest) that scores the most points. You don't have to pick the highest scoring team, you just have to pick a team that scores more points than the team(s) picked by the member(s) you are tied with. The second tiebreaker is time. Early bird gets the worm if the contest comes down to the second tiebreaker. This is a season long contest and you can enter in any or all regions that you wish. At the end of the regular season, the top two contestants will compete during the special Sweet 16 Contest for statewide bragging rights on Bluegrasspreps and a grand prize. If you win more than one position in the postseason playoff, then your second slot will go to the next contestant in order.. The more contests you enter, the better your chances of qualifying for the Sweet 16 Contest. If you win a weekly contest, you will receive a quality prize. Check here for a reference. The deadline for all entries is 5 p.m. (ET) Friday. Make sure you post your winners and assign each of them one of the following point values (7-5-3-2-1) based on how strongly you feel that that team will win.(Please note that if your selections are NOT in the specified format, your ENTIRE set of picks will be voided) 7 5 3 2 1 1st Tiebreaker: Team scoring the most points. 2nd Tiebreaker: Time of post. The Week 2 games are: Menifee County @ Bath County Powell County vs. Frankfort Johnson Central vs. Rowan County Henry Clay vs. Pulaski County Perry Central @ Harlan County
  11. The freight train continues as the Golden Eagles are 4-0 again after a 44-8 pasting of Harlan County. This week they enter district play, visiting Boyd County, fresh off their first loss in a 37-0 shutout by Russell. A season ago this went.... pretty much the way you'd think this one is probably going to go, as Johnson Central won 59-12. Still, the Lions are enjoying a bit of success this year - could they pull a real shocker? :scared:
  12. Johnson Central hasn't lost a regular season game since 2012, and haven't lost a district game since 2011. This week..... probably isn't the week that stops. But Greenup County is a bit more capable of putting up a fight compared to the recent opponents of Johnson Central. What say you?
  13. Let's not sugar coat this - Johnson Central is a huge, huge, HUGE favorite. Does Boyd have any shot to pull a David against Goliath?
  14. The Golden Eagles rolled to yet another win, and no one has been able to stop or even slow down their offense. East Carter comes in on the heels of four straight losses, allowing over 40 points in each of them. The question here is, how bad does it get?
  15. Johnson Central will have to stay focused for one more week before they can tackle the opponent they most would like to - Ashland. This week, they have Rowan County, which enters at 4-4, fresh off of a victory against Boyd County 34-16 last Friday. That snapped a three game skid for the Vikings, and judging by the results against Ashland and Greenup County, they are probably expected not to fare well here. Anyone think differently?
  16. Another district game, another leveling of a district opponent last week for Johnson Central. The Golden Eagles have not allowed more than 8 points in a game since playing Lexington Catholic on September 2nd, and LexCath is the only team this year to notch more than 6 against them. That has allowed Johnson Central to run up an average margin of victory of just over 35 PPG - averaging almost a running clock every time they take the field. By contrast, Rowan County enters on the high of their first win of the season, raising their record to 1-7 with a 21-0 victory over Boyd County. The Vikings had not scored in their previous three games, and their 21 points were just 9 points less than they'd scored in the previous 7 games combined. All signs point to a blowout victory for Johnson Central, but what say you?
  17. Johnson Central rolled to 5-0 last week with a 56-0 thrashing of Boyd County, the first shutout of the year for the Golden Eagle defense. This week they get another soft landing when they visit East Carter, which is just 1-4 on the year and has fallen in four straight. The Raiders dropped a 44-3 decision to Greenup County, and fell 52-7 to Johnson Central a year ago. Who wins?
  18. Last week Johnson Central completed their conquest of the West Virginia portion of their schedule with a 30-6 win over South Charleston. Now, they turn their eyes back to Kentucky, starting with Harlan County. This starts a stretch where the Golden Eagles should not be seriously challenged until Belfry in the final week. Harlan County enters at 1-3, falling 15-13 to Knox Central to drop their second straight. A year ago Johnson Central knocked off Harlan County 42-0. What's the result this time?
  19. Another day, another blowout, as Johnson Central moved to 6-0 with a 57-7 smashing of East Carter. Next up, Greenup County, as the Golden Eagles return home for the first time since September 9th. Greenup County has put together a nice season themselves, entering at 5-2 and on a three game win streak. They likewise blew out East Carter, winning 44-3 two weeks ago. Last season Johnson Central won 35-6. What are we looking at in 2016?
  20. No one wants to have had two bye weeks in the first four of the season, but that's what Johnson Central has had, and now coming off of this week. When last we saw Johnson Central, they had a dominating performance against 3A power Lexington Catholic. This week they get Harlan County, a program far off the form they showed to start the decade. It figures to be an easy win, but what say you?
