  1. Johnson Central makes a rare opening week appearance, eschewing their usual by week out of the gate. The back to back 4A runners-up dropped their season opener a season ago, but didn't lose again until the state finals. They'll meet a Lafayette team that almost completely reversed that script - winning their season opener but then losing the next ten contests. Is this as mismatched as that sounds?
  2. The Cougars keep rolling along, bludgeoning Butler County 57-0 to open the 2018 season. Tyler Ezell only needed 6 completed passes to net 203 yards through the air, while Gary Hardy converted two of his 8 rushes into scores. Meanwhile, Muhlenberg County remained stuck in neutral as Apollo walloped them 47-12. A season ago Logan County won 36-18. Can we expect a bigger margin this time?
  3. The Flyers keep, er, flying high as they stormed to a perfect record in their district with a 47-14 smattering of North Oldham a week ago. They tune up for the playoffs by visiting Tates Creek, who come in at 4-4. Last year the Creekers took Franklin County down 14-9. Can Tates Creek pull it off again or will Franklin County win their sixth in a row?
  4. This was the game that kicked off John Hardin's 7 game win streak a season ago, but the win streak has begun early this time, as the Bulldog defense stood tall and the offense did enough in a 14-7 win over Central Hardin. That snapped a two game losing streak to the Bruins for John Hardin, and it is a real lightning rod win over a program that had just taken South Warren to overtime. Meanwhile Meade County is still on a two game win streak thanks to an abrupt stoppage to their matchup with Bryan Station, in which they trail 7-6 in the second quarter. As of this posting, the Green Wave are still 2-2 on the year. They share two common opponents with John Hardin, but PRP provides the more accurate read. PRP beat John Hardin by 18, but dominated Meade County by 40. Foreshadowing?
  5. John Hardin stands apart from their 4A Top Ten brethren in playing out of class this week, hosting 6A Meade County. A year ago the Green Wave got the best of a struggling Bulldog team 27-25, their first victory over John Hardin in 11 years after many close games. The common opponents this year are PRP and Warren Central. PRP blew out both, but John Hardin got the victory over Warren Central while Meade County took a running clock loss. It seems hard to believe that much of a margin can be closed, but stranger things have happened. Any hope for Meade?
  6. Ashland saw their six game winning streak snapped by an inspired Johnson Central team that seems hellbent on finishing the job this season. Ashland started the game with a 6-0 lead, but gave up 43 unanswered in the 43-6 loss. They'll look to get back to their winning ways when they close their regular season at home against 6A Tates Creek, which enters at 5-4, but fresh off a pasting by Lafayette, dropping two of three. These two squared off a season ago, where the Commodores sent Ashland into the playoffs with two straight losses, taking a home 41-22 decision from the Tomcats, who ultimately ended the year with a 1-3 thud after starting 8-0. Can Ashland avoid that type of ending this year?
  7. 2016 continues to be very similar to 2015 for John Hardin, who dropped to 1-3 after a loss to 6A power PRP a week ago. So far, the only result that has flipped from 2015 was North Hardin, and they'll hope to flip another in Central Hardin, 28-21 winners over John Hardin a year ago. That ultimately became the turning point for the Bulldogs, who did not lose again until the region finals. This year they'll get Central Hardin fresh off their first loss of the year, a tough 27-20 OT loss to 4A #2 South Warren. In that sense, it will help the Bulldogs have an early read on where they fall in the 4A elite pecking order, and their last true test before Christian County in the week's final game. It's a big time rivalry in Hardin County - who takes it?
  8. Week 0 went exactly as planned for North Hardin, as they opened with a win for the first time since 2011. For John Hardin..... not so much - they lost a much-heralded battle with South Warren 43-12. This is a rematch of a late season stunner last year that saw North Hardin knock off their county rivals 44-36. Will the Bulldogs get revenge for last year and back on track for this one?
  9. Series History: First Meeting Series at McCracken County: First Meeting The nice thing about two 0-1 teams playing is that someone is going to put Week 1 behind them and come out feeling better. The bad thing is that the other team is going to find themselves looking into the abyss. For the Dragons this is the start of a four game odyssey as they hope and pray that their homefield will be finished with construction by late September. Both teams lost to ranked opponents in the Week 1 (McCracken County fell 21-7 at home to Paducah while Owensboro knocked off Warren Central 29-7 at WKU) - who ends up happier this week?
  10. It was a tale of two weeks for Collins, following up a low scoring affair with lightly regarded Montgomery County with a blowout of Bullitt East, a 5A team on the fringe of the rankings. Now they'll take on 1-1 Louisville Eastern, which also took down Bullitt East by a modest 28-14 score before taking it on the chin against CAL 42-7 last week. It's the home opener for Collins, the first time they'll play in front of a partisan crowd since a 34-9 blowout loss to Central Hardin last year. Will they wipe away the memory of that loss to a 6A opponent with a win over another one?
  11. As mentioned in the 4A notebook, Bourbon County put up the most impressive victory of the week for a 4A team in knocking off 5A ranked Southwestern 31-29 at Danville. This week Bourbon County takes on an even bigger opponent in Madison Central, which enters unbeaten at 2-0, with victories over Wayne County and Dunbar. Who exits with their first blemish of the year?
  12. Three weeks into the season, we still don't have a very clear picture of John Hardin. So far they've played an opponent that no one will beat (Bowling Green), an opponent everyone will beat (Warren Central), and an opponent that they dominated statistically, but managed to come out on the wrong end of the scoreboard against (North Hardin). This week they'll take on a dangerous PRP team that enters at 3-0, winning their games by an average of nearly 37 points per game. A season ago, the Panthers waxed John Hardin by a score of 42-13. The Bulldogs will be looking for a measure of revenge, and should also find a much better measuring stick of where they are. Can they reverse the score from last year, or will they continue to have trouble finding Ws against this brutal opening stretch in their schedule?
  13. Only ten seniors were lost from the 2015 region runner-up Knox Central squad, featuring an experienced offensive line paving the way for Donavan Arthur, a 1,274 yard rusher a season ago. Last season they had a tough schedule, and this season does not deviate, as the Panthers step up in class to take on 6A Madison Central in the Roy Kidd Bowl. Last season it was Bryan Station putting a 49-0 hurt on them - will Knox fare better to open this time?
  14. The Wayne County Cardinals take on the Bryan Station Defenders out of 6A in the Roy Kidd Bowl this Saturday. Last year Wayne County started 2-2, but closed with nine straight wins before falling to Johnson Central in the state semis. One of those early losses was in this bowl to Madison Central. They'll step up in class again in this matchup - will the result be different this time?
  15. It's the latest installment in a bitter rivalry when John Hardin hosts 6A's North Hardin. The Bulldogs enter off a humbling loss to Bowling Green - but then again, a lot of teams will be humbled by the Purples. Very little went right for John Hardin, and they'll look to right the ship this week. They'll look to continue their success against their rival, who they lost to only once in the last decade, a stunner in 2014. The Trojans are entering off an impressive 21-20 overtime win over Boyle County in the first week. Does John Hardin even up both teams' records or do the Trojans continue the momentum and move to 2-0?
  16. Game 1 of the state title defense went exactly as hoped for the South Warren Spartans, who have now notched 16 straight wins overall, and 24 consecutive in the regular season, the latest, a 56-14 plastering of Monroe County. The reloaded defense proved as rigid as ever against the run, allowing only 15 on the ground, but did show some signs of inexperience in giving up a first quarter score, and over 100 yards through the air. They should find it much easier against Owensboro Apollo, which fell 42-36 to Muhlenberg County a week ago. Last year, South Warren took this game 42-6 on the road. Within the home confines, how bad does this get?
  17. Collins won a shootout with Bullitt East 55-52, in which the teams combined for over 1100 yards of total offense. JR Lucas was especially impressive, going 21/29 for 389 yards and 6 TDs. This week they'll travel to 1-1 Louisville Eastern, which comes in off a 34-11 loss to Christian Academy-Louisville. They also played Bullitt East, winning 36-32. The common scores tell a story of a hard fought game. Last year Eastern got the better of Collins 49-44. Might we see a similar result?
