Those catastrophes PALE in comparison to the dismal scoring in this week's contest. 21 entries. 4 managed to scrape double figures (you do the math). Two scores of zero. Zip. Nada. For our futbol-following friends - nil. Sad. We needed a first-time player to enter the contest and garner the victory - hollow as it may be given the competition. 22. An impromptu meeting of two top 3 teams in the 4th Region took place in the Owensboro Invitational, and the Falcons used that opportunity to make a statement. It was a tight 37-35 game at the half with the Falcons leading, and 41 all midway through the third. Monroe County then scored the final 8 points of the quarter and drained a three to open the fourth to open up a 52-41 lead, the largest by either team in the game. The game was never closer than four points again, although the Dragons got that close with around 5 minutes left and the ball. An over and back call led to a Monroe County three on an offensive board, followed by another turnover, and that was basically the game. The two teams don't meet that much, but it was still rather staggering that Monroe County had not beaten Warren Central since 1989, by far their longest streak timewise against a region opponent. The Dragons had won 12 straight in the series, and it's just Monroe's second win over Central. They became the first non-14th District team to win a region contest against Central since December 2011, and the first from the 15th District since February 2008. This is the worst start for the Dragons since that same 07/08 season, and they are hoping that's where the comparisons will stop. That season was the last they had a losing record and the last they failed to make the region tournament. For Monroe County, it cements them as the #2 team in the region, and is the strongest statement possible before their late January meeting with Bowling Green. They are a serious threat to win the region as they have cracked the veneer of the 14th District. I think I'll have to harp on it every time until I see it stopped or they start hitting them, but the amount of missed three pointers by the Dragons was staggering. They hit some too, but I don't think I'll be surprised if they shot something like 8/26. The zone has been eating them alive.
