Nearly everyone scored in single-digits; many in the low single-digits. As a result, papa feels compelled to lighten up with his selections in Week 9. At any rate, congratulations toballhog whose winning score of 13 was just strong enough to edge out TAC and Omega Man, who posted THE ONLY TWO other entries to reach double figures. If I had achieved ANY ONE OF THE REMAINING SCORES, I would be ashamed. Deeply ashamed. Here are this week's scores (please double-check; although it shouldn't take long - the numbers aren't that large):

13 ballhog

11 TAC

11 Omega Man

9 BIGZIG

8 Crawlb4uball

8 Rez

7 LCDAWGS19

7 Can'tcoach

6 MNCM

6 All State Baseball

6 NEERFAN

5 gold sunrise

5 sealedpower

5 KY Thorobred

4 Dreamkiller

4 Randy Parker

4 kygirl

3 dmh115

3 dd734

2 The Professor

And here are the season-long standings through Week 9 (again, please discount daahhble-check):

84 TAC

82 Dreamkiller

82 Randy Parker

81 gold sunrise

79 sealedpower

75 LCDAWGS19

73 raiderbird

73 All State Baseball

69 MNCM

69 dd734

68 Can'tcoach

66 The Professor

66 kygirl

66 NEERFAN

65 dmh115

65 BIGZIG

61 Crawlb4uball

59 Lawnboy13

48 PurplePride92

43 cjjennings

41 Rez

28 2-3-Zone

28 Sports Fan1230

26 JokersWild24

24 Qryche11

22 KY Thorobred

19 AME1981

16 Jack of all Trades

13 ballhog

13 Mentschwhatever

11 Omega Man

8 bjknku02

Thanks for playing, and see you in Week 9. I had HOPED that the Week 9 respite would give our competitors the opportunity to rest up and sharpen their prognostication prowess. Boy was I wrong. This weeks entries made the Week 8 entries look like professionals. We had a grand total of ONE entry that hit double figures. Congratulations to TACwhose magnificent score of 13 was FAR AND AWAY the best of the week. We had NINE ENTRIES with scores of 3 or fewer (this includes you, Randy). Shame, shame, shame. Now you all have NINE MONTHS to think about what you have done. To ask yourselves, "What could I have done better"? "Did I give it everything I had week in and week out, or did I Randy Moss a couple of times"? 10. 1) 5A Covington Catholic (3-0) – The Colonels haven’t often found themselves behind in a game in recent years, but 3A Lexington Catholic (2-1) definitely had them against the ropes, leading for the vast majority of the game. After scoring the game’s first touchdown about halfway through the 1st quarter on Friday, Cov Cath trailed for most of the game by as many as 14 points, but came back to take over the lead on a 2-point conversion call with 2:52 left on the clock and held on for the 39-38 win. Caleb Jacob was 17-26 passing for 247yds and 1TD, and ran 8 times for 20yds and 2 TDs. Daniel Felix ran 9 times for 86yds and 1 TD, had 1 reception for a 29yd touchdown, and led the defense with 12 tackles. Covington Catholic hosts 6A Dixie Heights (1-2) tonight in Park Hills in the 46th edition of the Battle Of Dixie Highway and bragging rights for which color Colonels should really be. 2) 5A Highlands (2-1) – The Birds dusted themselves off after their loss in the Cumberland Falls Pigskin Classic, and hosted 6A Campbell County (0-3) on Friday, and sent the Camels back to the south end of Campbell County with a 47-0 loss. Collin Hollingsworth was 15-22 passing for 262yds, 3 TDs and 1 INT. WR Hunter Ahlfeld led the receiving corps with 4 receptions for 86yds and 1 TD, and Jacob Welch had 2 receptions for 38yds and 2 TDs. Highlands kept the Camels’ D guessing with 9 different ball carriers in the game as the Bluebirds rolled up 434 total yards of offense in the game. The Highlands offense held the Campbell County offense to a mere 56yds total. Brycen Huddleston led the defense with an impressive 11 tackles including 1 tackle for loss. Highlands heads to Independence tonight to take on the 6A Simon Kenton Pioneers (2-1). 3) 2A Beechwood (0-2) – The Tigers new they were going to be facing a tough first half to their season, and for a second week, it proved correct. Beechwood traveled south to Somerset and played on a very strong 2A Somerset (3-0) team. After beating the Briar Jumpers 28-0 last year in Fort Mitchell, the Briar Jumpers returned the favor this year, sending the Tigers home with a 46-14 loss. Beechwood came out looking strong with an 87yd Parker Mason return for TD on the opening kickoff, but it was tough sledding after that for the Tigers offense, which was unable to score again until there were less than 5 minutes to go in the game. QB Cam Hergott had a respectable 100yds passing on 8 completions, and the Tigers’ 1 offensive TD was scored on a 1 yd run by freshman RB Xavier Campbell, capping off a 62 yard 4th quarter drive. Beechwood hosts the 3A Corbin Redhounds (2-1) tonight in Fort Mitchell. 4) 6A Simon Kenton (2-1) – Simon Kenton put another check in the W column on Friday with their 13-10 win over OH-D1 Oak Hills (0-2). Their running game looked improved from the previous week, with Austin Hammack making his first start of the year and posting 47yds and 1 TD. Freshman Chase Crone played the entire game at TD, and was 17-25 passing for 132yds and 1 INT, and the remaining TD came on a punch-in carry by RB Quincy North. Junior LB Nate Walker led the defensive front for Simon Kenton with 10 tackles including 2 for losses, and junior DL Jake Huff came in just behind Walker with 9 tackles. The Pioneers benefitted from 2 Oak Hills turnovers, with an interception by Brennon Miller, and a forced fumble by DB Ethan Nuckols that was recovered by DB Tyler Musick. The ‘Neers host the 5A Highlands Bluebirds (2-1) this week. 5) 6A Ryle (2-1) – Ryle proved that they’ve put their first game behind them after coming out on Friday and earning another win for a second week in a row. The Raiders beat 5A Cooper (2-1) in a 20-16 defensive battle for bragging rights in Union. Coach Mike Engler appears to be decided completely on QB Bradyn Lyons, whose experience as a junior earned him the start and the exclusive QB appearance for the Raiders last week. Lyons was 8-13 passing for 110yds and 2 INTs. RB Kyle England led the offense with 25 carries for 144yds rushing and 3 TDs, and WR Connor Lee led the receiving corps with 3 receptions for 72yds. Sophomore LB Gabe Savage led the defense with 8 tackles including 3 for losses, and defensive backs Ryan Planck and Mathias Cusick both had interceptions. Ryle plays 5A Boone County (2-1) tonight at home. 6) 5A Cooper (2-1) – Cooper was dropped in their first loss of the season on Friday, losing 20-16 to 6A Ryle (2-1). QB Drew Warth was 5-13 passing in the game for 91yds and 1 INT, and Jeremiah Lee added 1 completion on 4 passing attempts. Lee also led the team rushing with 54yds and 2 TDs on 14 carries, while RB Brandon Tye added 50yds on 14 carries. The defense held Ryle to 184 total yards of offense in the game, and Jeremiah Lee & Chester Hale both managed interceptions from the Jaguars’ defensive backfield, but it wasn’t enough to hold off Ryle’s four-point victory. Cooper hosts 6A Campbell County (0-3) tonight. 7) 1A Newport Central Catholic (1-2) – Not everyone makes it a habit of heading across the river to play the teams in Ohio, but the Breds showed that they weren’t afraid to take on OH-DIV Roger Bacon (1-0) last week, despite the 41-14 loss. QB Paul Kremer had a strong 192yds passing and 1 TD on 14 completions out of 31 attempts, and was intercepted once. RB Joe Doeker led the offensive rushing attack with 33yds and 1 TD on 6 carries, but the Breds struggled on the ground with 49 total yards rushing. WR Caleb Jefferson was Kremer’s favorite receiver, with 5 receptions for 97yds and 1 TD. Defensive stats were not reported for the game. New Cath heads to 2A Walton-Verona (2-1) tonight. 8) 4A Scott (2-1) – The Eagles improved to 2-1 with a big win over 2A Covington Holy Cross, beating the Indians 42-6 on Friday. Gus Howlett nearly matched his passing yardage from the previous two games combined, going 15-20 passing for 147yds, 2 TDS and 1 INT. With #1 RB Quincy Perrin sidelined due to injury, senior RB Robert Pence stepped up and ran 19 times for 147yds and 2 TDs, while WR Philip Gallardo added 60yds and 2 TDS of his own on the ground attack. Wide Receiver Carson Craycraft had 63yds receiving and a TD on 5 catches and Cameron Patterson had 30yds and a TD on his 5 catches. Nigel Robinson led the defense with 5 tackles including 3 for losses, and Sage Lalley, Zach Scheper, and Michael Nicholas each had 4 tackles a piece. Scott hosts OH-DV Bethel-Tate (1-1) tonight. 9) 5A Conner (2-1) – After a showing against Ryle that didn’t add up to as they had hoped, the Cougars bounced back with a big 35-0 win over 6A Dixie Heights (1-2). QB Jared Hicks had a big night passing, going 20-26 for 297yds and 4 TDs. Hicks also scored the Cougars’ 1 TD from the ground, coming in just behind RB Douglas Abdon’s 51yds with the 47yds Jared racked up on 10 carries. WR Caleb Ervin led the receivers with 94yds and 1 TD. On the other side of the ball, middle linebacker Parker Hitzfield put on a show with 11 tackles and 1 sack, DB Clayton Melcher had 8 tackles, and DB Timothy Leiprecht had 7 tackles. Conner will host 2A Lloyd Memorial (2-1) tonight in Hebron. 10) Lloyd Memorial (2-1) – The Juggs make their arrival in the northern Kentucky Power Rankings tonight after putting a second tic in the win column with a 22-14 win over 5A Boone County (2-1). Sophomore QB Jacob Davidson was 4-11 passing for 60yds, 1 TD and 1 INT, and also carried 6 times for 31yds. Senior RB Dakota Thiel was the offensive workhorse on Friday, with 98yds rushing on 21 carries for 2 TDs, while RB Isaac Abdon added 55yds more on 18 carries. Abdon was also the anchor of Lloyd’s defensive front in what turned out to be a largely defensive battle of a game, coming up with 10 tackles in the game from his position at linebacker. Lloyd was able to hold Boone County to 114 total yards offense. The Juggernauts will be in Hebron tonight playing 5A Conner (2-1). TRENDING UP 2A Lloyd Memorial (2-1) – It’s always a good week when you beat a football team from three class-sizes above yours. That’s what the Juggs did with their 22-14 win over 6A Boone County (2-1) on Friday. 2A Newport (3-0) – The Wildcats are one of very few undefeated teams in northern Kentucky, and can’t but be anything but happy about that after handing 2A Carroll County (2-1) their first loss of the season in a 42-0. 4A Holmes (2-1) – The Bulldogs are 2-1 for the first time since the 2013 season, and did so by adding a 58-6 win on Friday over 2A Owen County (0-3). TRENDING DOWN 2A Beechwood (0-2) – It was a big loss for Beechwood, who came home from 2A Somerset (3-0) on the wrong side of the 46-14 scoreboard. The Tigers will have to figure out how to beat the Briar Jumpers if they want to win a championship in their first year as a 2A football program. 1A Bellevue (0-3) – The Tigers dropped their third game straight in a 26-27 loss to 1A Bishop Brossart (2-1). 6A Campbell County (0-3) – The Camels also continued their winless effort this season, losing 47-0 to 5A Highlands (2-1) in the Camels’ second shutout this year.
 11. BluegrassPreps.com is giving you a chance to show off your football knowledge statewide! The BluegrassPreps Regional Contests give you chances to pick games in different parts of the state for prizes each week of the regular season. There will be five regional contests every week. You will have a chance to pick the winners in each region -- NKY, EKY, Lexington/Central KY, Louisville, and WKY. This is the NKY Contest. The NKY Contest is sponsored by Joe Lay & Sons Plumbing. For all your plumbing needs, please contact Joe Lay & Sons Plumbing at: Joe Lay & Sons Plumbing in Northern Kentucky and Southern Ohio Each region will have five games to pick from each week. We pick the games, and you will pick the winner of each game, assigning your picks a point value of 7-5-3-2-1. The first tiebreaker is picking the team (of the ten teams in the contest) that scores the most points. You don't have to pick the highest scoring team, you just have to pick a team that scores more points than the team(s) picked by the member(s) you are tied with. The second tiebreaker is time. This is a season long contest and you can enter in any or all regions that you wish. At the end of the regular season, the winner of each region and the next five highest point totals statewide (the Wild Cards) will compete during the playoffs for statewide bragging rights on BluegrassPreps. If you win more than one position in the postseason playoff, then your second slot will go to the next Wild Card. The best part is, if you win a weekly contest, you will receive your choice of BGP merchandise! There will also be merchandise for the overall season winner. The deadline for all entries is 5:00pm EST Friday. Be sure to post your winners and assign each of them one of the following point values (7-5-3-2-1) based on how strongly you feel that that team will win. QB Cooper Gullion passed for 163yds and 3 TDs, and Sammy Elliston passed once for another TD, but it wasn’t enough to best the Camels’ offensive charge. Defensively, Garrett Coghlan led with 11 tackles, and Andrew Davis had 10 tackles. Conner has another big challenge this week in 6A Ryle (5-2). 8) 2A Newport Central Catholic (4-3) – After a disappointing loss 2 weeks ago to 6A Conner (4-3), the Breds came back from their bye week on Friday and throttled 2A Covington Holy Cross (0-8), winning 49-0 in their first district game. With less than 100yds and 2TDs passing, it was a group effort rushing, led by Kyle Kelly with 149yds and 3 TDs. 11 more players ran the ball for New Cath, and Jason Decker & Max Floyd both had TDs on the ground. Malaki Herndon and Hunter Cain both had receiving touchdowns for the Breds. New Cath plays 2A district competitor Lloyd Memorial (5-2) this week. 9) 4A Scott (3-3) – Scott dropped back to .500 on Friday when they lost 42-35 to OH-DIV Taft (5-2). The Eagles had a respectable 312yds total offense, with 165 of those yards plus 3 TDs coming thanks to Quincy Perrin’s rushing talents. David Patrick and Alex Thurza also rushed for touchdowns. On the other side of the ball, Jared Kelsay led the defensive charge with 14 tackles. Scott, who is 2-0 in their district, faces 4A Bourbon County (5-2) in their third of four district games. 10) 2A Walton-Verona (3-2) – The Bearcats handed out their 4th shutout win of the season, this time with a 56-0 win over 2A Trimble County (6-1). Walton-Verona is now 2-0 in their district. QB Garrett Jones only threw twice, and for one reception in the game, good for a 25yd TD to Jack Watson. There were 14 Bearcat rushers in the game, accounting for 516 offensive yards. Among those was Garet Talbott, who led with 100yds and 1 TD. Walton-Verona takes on 2A Carroll County (3-4) this week in district play. GAME OF THE WEEK: 1A Beechwood (5-2) vs. 1A Ludlow (7-0) Beechwood is unquestionably one of the top teams in 1A, but Ludlow is coming into the game with their best record in over 20 years, and will be battling hard to continue with their undefeated season. Will Justin Blackburn and the Panthers be able to challenge Brayden Burch and the Tigers and hand them their first district loss in decades? TRENDING UP: 2A Lloyd Memorial (5-2) – The Juggernauts continued to quietly put together a nice season with a 36-8 win over 2A Newport (1-6). They play 2A Newport Central Catholic this week (4-3). 2A Owen County (5-2) – The Rebels put together another district win this week, improving to 2-1 in district with a 21-20 win over 2A Carroll County (3-4). They play Eminence this week (6-1). 5A Highlands (3-4) – The Birds avenged a 2016 loss to 5A Dixie Heights by beating the 3-5 Colonels 47-0 on Friday. They play 5A Covington Catholic (7-0) this week. TRENDING DOWN: 1A Bishop Brossart (4-3) – The Mustangs had their second straight loss on Friday, losing 45-26 to 1A Bracken County (6-2). They play 1A Paris (6-1) this week. 3A Pendleton County (3-4) – The Wildcats have lost three straight, most recently losing 49-14 to 3A Russel on Friday. They play 3A West Carter (2-5) this week. district game this Friday.

 16. Thanks to Northern Kentucky Family & Cosmetic Dentistry -"Making Northern Kentucky Smile" for sponsoring our 2016 Northern Kentucky Power Rankings! We encourage everyone to patronize all of our sponsors, and you can visit Northern Kentucky Family & Cosmetic Dentistry at 2047 Centennial Boulevard in Independence, KY. Well, #1 and #2 in Northern Kentucky is a pretty easy call. That we know. Beyond that, it’s tough to say definitively where everyone stands. There’s a lot to be said for things “depending on which team shows up” in regard to a number of teams around NKY. There are also quite a few teams in the #3 through #7 spots who could very well beat any other team in that range depending on any number of things in a given game. With that said, here’s what I’ve got: THE RANKINGS: 10) Newport Catholic (2A) 1-3 – The Breds dropped a third straight game on Friday, this time losing to the three-time defending 3A champs, Belfry. Both teams struggled with the pass, with a mere 28 yards a piece. However, Belfry almost quadrupled New Cath’s 100 yards by rushing for 396 yards. Isaiah Meyer ran for the Breds’ sole touchdown, while Jason Decker and Trent Wrobleski both posted 9 solo tackles on defense. Kurtis Sutkamp and Brady Hicks each added another 7 tackles a piece. New Cath will host 4A Harrison County on Friday for a Breds vs. Breds matchup in Newport. 9) Dixie Heights (5A) 2-1 – The Colonels were hande their first loss of the season via 6A Simon Kenton on Friday, losing 14-43. Dixie managed 285 yards total offense against the Pioneers, who haven’t allowed any more than 286 yards to a team this season. Senior RB Jose Torres had 97 of the Colonels' total yards, including a 72 yard touchdown run, making it his 6th of the season. Dixie heads to Hebron this week to take on the 6A Conner Cougars on Friday. 8) Beechwood (1A) 3-0 – One of three undefeated teams in the NKY top ten, Beechwood has managed to do so by beating 3 teams from higher classifications than themselves. Beechwood beat 4A Franklin County 57-21 at home on Friday, with 417 total yards offense and a running clock against the Flyers. QB Brayden Burch threw for 3 touchdowns this week, and Aiden Justice scored 2 touchdowns, including an 83 yard kickoff return. The Tiger defense had 8 points in the game, with a 1Q safety and a 31 yard pick-6 by Cody Lofton in the 2Q. Beechwood heads down Dixie Highway to take on 5A Cov Cath on Friday. 7) Highlands (5A) 1-3 – After coming up with a big week 0 win against 6A Cooper, the Birds have dropped 3 games straight, this time being beaten 14-50 by 6A Ryle. Highlands struggled greatly to get their running game moving, with a mere 34 yards rushing. Gosney’s 216 yards passing was the highlight of the game for the Birds, throwing for 1 TD completion to Braden Posey. Jared Pulsfort added the other touchdown on the ground. Highlands will have another tough one this week when they head to Louisville to take on 6A St. Xavier. 6) Campbell County (6A) 2-2 – The Camels dropped one this week to 6A rival Cooper 14-44. Their passing was there, but they couldn’t get the run game moving against the Jags, only coming up with 69 yards on the ground. QB Austin Hoeh threw for 169 yards and the Campbell County’s only two touchdowns, while the defense struggled greatly against Cooper’s superior passing game, and gave up a total 522 yards to the Jags. The Camels have another tough row to hoe this week when they host the undefeated 6A Ryle Raiders. 5) Conner (6A) 2-1 – The Cougars impressed in their losing performance against 6A Simon Kenton last week, and they continued working to expel doubts on Friday by trouncing 4A Scott 60-8 at home. 12 solo tackles by Austin Cain and 10 more by Peyton VanHorn is a great way to expel doubt…as is Walker Buelow’s going 5-5 with 153 yards and 3 TDs passing. The Cougars also had an impressive four RBs with rushing TDs. Conner travels to 5A Dixie Heights on Friday. 4) Covington Catholic (5A) 3-1 – The Colonels pulled off a win for a third week straight, this time beating 3A Lex Cath 21-20 at home. It was another nail-biter, as Cov Cath won for a second week in a row via an opponent’s missed XP. Interestingly, it also makes the third win in a row where the losing team had more total offense than the Colonels. Senior LB Ben France had 8 solo tackles, while DL Jacob Kunkel added 6 of his own, and LB Anthony Best added 5 more to his count. AJ Mayer had another big game in the air, passing for 240+ for a third straight week, while sophomore RB McGinness had 117 and 1 TD on the ground. The Colonels host 1A Beechwood on Friday. 3) Cooper (6A) 3-1 – The Jags have shaken off their week 0 loss to Highlands by winning the following three games. This week they beat 6A Campbell County 44-14, pointing out my mistake in ranking them so low last week. Cooper has only allowed 56 points in the last three games, which is only 4 more than allowed against Highlands in their first game of the season. QB Lonaker had an incredible 344 yards and 3 TDs passing against the Birds, while Schlarman and Armour both averaged over 20 yards per reception. The Jags host 6A Simon Kenton on Friday. 2) Ryle (6A) 4-0 – Ryle made things look surprisingly easy on Friday when they beat the 5A Highlands Bluebirds 50-14 at home. There was even a rare running clock against the Birds. Tanner Morgan had an all-star performance, going 16 for 19 with 250 yards and 2 TD’s passing. Cole Burch punched in the other 4 touchdowns on the ground, and the Raider defense had four players with 4+ tackles a piece. Great outing by Ryle. The Raiders have 6A Campbell County on Friday on the road. 1) Simon Kenton (6A) 4-0 – Simon Kenton has several “should beat” teams on their schedule. For that matter, they have a couple of “should beat easily” teams on their schedule. 5A Dixie Heights definitely falls into the “should beat” category, and the Pioneers did just that on Friday, beating the Colonels 43-14 on the road. Both Cameron Racke and backup QB Matt Shearer threw for over 100 yards and a TD each, and they both added on a rushing TD in the victory. Simon Kenton heads on the road to take on 6A Cooper in a district matchup on Friday. Trending Up: 6A Conner (2-1) – The Cougars rebounded from a tough loss to 6A Simon Kenton by shellacking the 4A Scott Eagles 60-8 on Friday. 6A Cooper (3-1) – The Jags knocked down 6A Campbell County, posting their 4th game with 40+ points scored. 2A Lloyd Memorial (3-1) – The Juggernauts blanked 4A Holmes this week in a 22-0 win. In 4 games, Lloyd’s defense has only allowed a total 3 touchdowns thus far this season. Trending Down: 5A Dixie Heights (2-1) – The Colonels struggled this week, taking their first loss of the season at the hands of 6A Simon Kenton. Dixie lost 14-43. 5A Highlands (1-3) – A running clock against Highlands? That’s what happened on Friday in the Birds 14-50 loss to 6A Ryle. 2A Newport Catholic (1-3) – Three losses in a row for New Cath, who couldn’t get things moving against the 3A powerhouse Belfry Pirates on Friday. The Breds lost 8-41. Player Of The Week: Austin Cain (Conner) Cain came up big with an outstanding 12 solo tackles for the Cougars in their 60-8 win over 4A Scott on Friday. Game Of The Week: Beechwood (1A) vs. Covington Catholic (5A) The battle for bragging rights along Dixie Highway as the Tigers head north to take on the Colonels in the NKY game of the week. Beechwood comes into the game undefeated at 3-0, and Cov Cath is 3-1 with two wins over Ohio teams, and a loss to 6A Ryle.

 18. Thanks to Orange Leaf Crescent Springs for sponsoring the Northern Kentucky Power Rankings. We encourage everyone to patronize our sponsors, and you can visit them at 2311 Buttermilk Crossing in Crescent Springs. Feel free to bring along this premium coupon when you visit! THE RANKINGS: 10) Conner (6A / 1-1) – It’s tough to get a solid take on the strength of the Cougars after their first two games, after first trouncing a struggling 6A Boone County team 43-6 in their opener, and then following that up with a 54-0 loss to 6A powerhouse Simon Kenton this past Saturday. Conner did manage to post 200 yards of offense against Simon Kenton, but never managed to capitalize on things, and ended up being blanked on the scoreboard. With Ryle and Cooper both in their same 6A district, the Cougars will have to dig deep if they hope to get anywhere in the playoffs this fall. 9) Campbell County (6A / 0-3) – I still had Campbell County ranked in 5th place for Northern Kentucky last week, giving them the benefit of the doubt after playing East Central (IN) close in a very emotional day for many of the Camels, and then losing to an angry 5A Highlands team that was trying to rebound after an opening loss. However, after losing 19-28 this past Saturday to the 2A New Cath Thoroughbreds, I think my ranking last week was too high. Offensively, the Camels (228 yds) were within 1 yard of the Breds (229 yds) this week, but in the end, New Cath managed to turn that 1 yard advantage into a 9 point advantage. Campbell County won’t have any room to relax as they take on 6A Cooper this Friday, and then 6A Ryle the next week. 8) Newport Central Catholic (2A / 1-2) – New Cath had a rough start to the season, losing in a sloppy week one game to 4A Scott, and being shut out in a 35 point loss to the 6A Cooper Jaguars, who were on a strong roll after beating 5A Highlands in their first game of the season. This week the Breds were happy to have stud running back Jacob Smith returned to their backfield, and they appeared to have started working their way out of the early season hole they had found themselves in by beating 6A Campbell County 28-19 on Saturday. New Cath travels to Pike County this week to take on the 2-0 Belfry Pirates, the current 3A defending state champs. 7) Scott (4A / 1-0) – This is the third year straight that the Eagles have started their season out 3-0. Spending the last two seasons in 5A, Scott hasn’t fared quite so well once they have gotten into district play, but after moving down to 4A, could this season be a little different? A sloppy win over 2A New Cath in their first game, a big win over a struggling 5A Dixie Heights program in their second, and this week, an absolute shellacking of a struggling 2A Newport program. This week Scott welcomes 6A Conner to Taylor Mill for what looks to be one of the Eagle’s tougher games of the season. 6) Covington Catholic (5A / 0-3) – Cov Cath’s loss to Cincinnati St. X last week was relatively expected, and although Sycamore (OH) is no shabby team either, it’s still concerning when any team loses by 5+ touchdowns two weeks in a row. The Colonels have to be a little worried this week about their defense, and although the offense showed a little life in the second half this week against Sycamore, they didn’t manage to produce many results on the scoreboard. Coach Eviston will have the Colonels practicing hard this week as they get ready to travel south this week to take on 3A Lexington Catholic. Lex Cath is currently 1-2 coming off a loss to Johnson Central. 5) Beechwood (1A / 2-0) – The Tigers have been a little slow to start two weeks in a row now, but they have managed to get the game in control before too long both of the last two Fridays, scoring 48 points against both 2A Lloyd Memorial and 2A Somerset. Seniors Kyle Fieger and Ethan Stringer are showing that they are as capable as everyone had hoped. There are certainly arguments to be made that will both support and oppose the statement Beechwood is a better team than 5A Covington Catholic, but simply based on the Beechwood offensive performance in their games thus far, along with the 44 points teams are averaging against Cov Cath’s defense, I have to give the edge to the Tigers at the moment. Beechwood is on the road this week, playing at Ironton (OH), and then we’ll find out on September 18th whether or not I’m right about Beechwood and Cov Cath when the Tigers host the Colonels. 4) Highlands (5A / 1-2) – This is the first time since 2002 that the Bluebirds have started out a season with two losses out of their first three games, and it may be the first time they have ever had a running clock put on them in the first half of a football game. The Bluebirds can take a sigh of relief, albeit a small one, that there’s little doubting their a-typical performance this past week was in part due to the fact that they had both their starting quarterback Austin Hergott or wideout Mitchell Cain on the sideline. Highlands’ M.O. has always been steady improvement over the course of the season in order to come into the playoffs firing on all cylinders, and that certainly isn’t out of the question as of yet, but the next three weeks are going to be tough for the Bluebirds, with games against the undefeated 6A Ryle Raiders, the undefeated 6A St. Xavier Tigers, and the undefeated 6A Simon Kenton Pioneers. 3) Ryle (6A / 3-0) – The Raiders move up one spot in this week’s rankings after beating 6A Boone County 52-7 on Saturday. It’s hard to get a good read of things against a team like Boone – particularly with Ryle pulling their starters in the second quarter on Saturday, but with an overall 3-0 record, and after beating Cov Cath and Lex Cath both, Ryle isn’t looking bad at all. Their game this week against Highlands should be a decent gauge for the Raiders, and will likely decide whether or not they stay in the third spot in the NKY Power Rankings. 2) Cooper (6A / 2-1) – Should Cooper have stayed in 5A? I say yes – particularly seeing how the margin between the #1 and #2 spot in the NKY Power Rankings has widened after Cooper’s loss this week to 6A Bryan Station. Cooper has already proved that had they stayed in 5A, they would have been capable of beating some of their biggest competitors. However, this week, after losing in a 36-0 shutout to the Bryan Station Defenders, it looks like Cooper is going to have a rougher time in 6A than some had initially thought, seeing as 6A Simon Kenton already beat Bryan Station soundly in their second game this season. Cooper looks to rebound from their loss when they welcome the 6A Campbell County Camels to Union this Friday. 1) Simon Kenton (6A / 3-0) – With the exception of the weather, there wasn’t too much surprise coming out of Simon Kenton’s game this week in Hebron against 6A Conner. The Pioneers rolled to a 54 point shutout of the Cougars. Racke threw for 154 yards, including 2 touchdowns, and Powell rushed for 184 yards, including 2 touchdowns. Powell has averaged over 200 yards per game in the first three games of the season. The ‘Neers will be welcoming the 5A Dixie Colonels to Independence this Friday for what will likely be a rough night for Dixie as Simon Kenton looks for payback after the Colonels ended the Pioneers’ 2014 season in their most recent game - last November in the 6A quarterfinals. Co-Players Of The Week: Cameron Chase (Bellevue High School) Running back Cameron Chase averaged almost 7 yards per carry this week, rushing for 136 yards and 3 touchdowns in Bellevue’s game against Bishop Brossart Mustangs. Dillon Powell (Simon Kenton High School) Simon Kenton stud Dillon Powell had a great game on Saturday against Conner, rushing for 184 yards and 2 touchdowns, and receiving for another 30 yards and 1 more touchdown. Game Of The Week: Ryle (6A) vs. Highlands (5A) After two seasons of struggle, Ryle has been showing some solid steps forward in the beginning of the 2015 football season. Highlands has been somewhat the opposite, starting off 1-2 for the first time in over a decade. It will be interesting to see how each of these teams fare in this matchup – which will also be our first opportunity this season to compare performances by Highlands and Covington Catholic against a mutual opponent. Trending Up: 6A Ryle – The Raiders are 3-0, having beaten 5A Cov Cath, 3A Lex Cath, and now 6A Boone County. They have made their way back to their pre-season #3 spot in the NKY Power Rankings, and this week’s game against the 5A Highlands Bluebirds will tell us a bit more about how this Ryle program is really developing. 1A Bishop Brossart – There were a lot of rumblings about whether or not there would even be a Mustang football team this season, and after only winning eight games in the last four seasons combined, Bishop Brossart has managed to start off this season with a 3-0 record. The Mustangs host the 0-3 Trimble County Raiders this Friday. Trending Down: 5A Highlands – They may not have been at full strength this week – particularly with their starting QB sidelined to a shoulder injury – but running clocks are something the Bluebirds are used to handing their opposition, and something that rarely happens to them. Truth be told, they may not have EVER had a running clock hung on them in the first half of a football game ever. The Birds will be looking to rebound this week against 6A Ryle. Hopefully they come into the game healthy. 6A Campbell County – The Camels need to take a long look in the mirror before they go into their next two games. After a third straight loss this season, Campbell County faces a very tough 6A Cooper team this Friday, and a solid 6A Ryle team the next. They may well be facing a 0-5 start this season.

 22. THE RANKINGS: 10) Newport Catholic (2A) 2-3 – After a few tough weeks for New Cath, the Breds put things together last week by putting a 42-10 thumping on the 4A Harrison County Thorobreds. Senior linebacker Drew Bravard showed up in style on Friday, tallying 11 solo tackles and 4 more assisted tackles. After allowing almost 400 yards rushing in their loss last week to 3A Belfry, the Breds defensive line stepped it up by only allowing 40 yards rushing this week. QB Henschen threw for 102 yards and 1 TD, while RB Kyle Kelly rushed 21 times for 169 yards and 3 TDs. New Cath has their work cut out for them this week when they head to Hebron on Saturday to take on 6A Conner. 9) Dixie Heights (5A) 2-2 – The Colonels lost for a second week straight, this time only managing a single touchdown in a 8-40 loss at the hands of the 6A Conner Cougars. With a mere 156 passing yards in the last 3 games, Dixie’s air-strike is struggling immensely as they only managed 41 yards passing this week. The Colonels had a total 227 yards on Friday. Dixie will try to build on their strengths this week against 6A Boone County, but have their work cut out against them with games agsint 6A Cooper, 5A Highlands, 5A Cov Cath and 6A Ryle all looming in the second half of their season. 8) Beechwood (1A) 3-1 – The Tigers suffered their first loss of the season in what is likely to be their toughest game of the regular season, against 5A Covington Catholic. Despite leading 3-0 going into the 2nd quarter, Beechwood’s offense struggled – to say the least – failing to total any positive offensive yards in the first half, and posting a scant 58 yards in the second half. The Tigers were outmatched in size and depth on the field, and it showed on the final scoreboard as Beechwood left Park Hills with a 10-44 loss. Beechwood will look to shake things off as they prepare to take on 2A Holy Cross in Covington on Friday. 7) Highlands (5A) 1-4 – It was another tough week for the Bluebirds, who found themselves on the negative side of a running clock for a second week in a row, this time losing 18-45 to 6A St. Xavier. It was also a second straight week that Highlands had less than 100 yards rushing (64), and a second week in a row for QB Gosney throwing for over 200 yards (259), with 3 TDs in the air. Evan Fickenscher, Nick Veneman, and Jared Wogan all scored for the Birds. Things don’t look to get much easier this week, as the undefeated 6A Simon Kenton Pioneers will be rolling into Ft. Thomas on Friday. 6) Campbell County (6A) 2-3 – It was a second straight loss for the Campbell County this week, as they dropped one on Friday to 6A Ryle, losing 7-38. The defense had very few answers to the Raider offense, who were able to pass and run at will against the Camels. Although QB Austin Hoeh was able to put up 181 yards passing in the game, their running game never found a foothold and was kept to 56 yards on the ground. Campbell County finishes the first half of the season as the apparent kings of their side of the Licking River, but they still have to face down the likes of 6A Simon Kenton and Conner in the second half of their schedule. This week the Camels head to Mt. Orab, OH to take on the Western Brown Broncos (1-3). 5) Conner (6A) 3-1 – Conner came out firing on all pistons on Friday, welcoming the 5A Dixie Heights Colonels to Hebron and sending them home on the short end of a 40-8 Cougar victory. Senior RB Armand Jackson had a huge game, with 205 yards and 3 TD’s rushing, while QB Buelow tacked on another 160 yards and 2 TD’s in the air. Senior Peyton VanHorn followed up his 10-tackle games against 4A Scott and 6A Simon Kenton with three-peat against Dixie, bringing his total for the season to 35 solo tackles. The Cougars will host 2A New Cath this week on Saturday. 4) Covington Catholic (5A) 4-1 – After narrow 1-point victories two weeks on a row for the Colonels, Cov Cath decided to put one away this week, beating 1A Beechwood 44-10 at home. The game started out rough, with the Tigers leading 3-0 at the end of the 1Q, and Cov Cath only holding a 10-3 lead going into the half – despite 0 offensive yards in the half by Beechwood. But the Colonels came out and dominated the 3Q, adding on 34 points to their score. 302 of Cov Cath’s total 462 offensive yards came thanks to junior quarterback AJ Mayer’s arm. The Colonels travel to Columbus this week to take on an undefeated St. Francis DeSales team on Friday. 3) Cooper (6A) 3-2 – After enjoying a 3 week long winning streak, the Jags hit a speed bump this week when 6A Simon Kenton came to town in Union. Despite losing 20-46, Cooper had a respectable 319 yards total offense with QB Lonaker going 17-37 with 222 yards and 1 TD passing, but even so, they were unable to keep up with the Pioneers’ high powered, multi-faceted offense, who came up with 540 yards of their own. At the halfway point of their season, the Jags still have their work cut out for them with games against 6A district foes Ryle and Conner to contend with. Cooper travels to take on 3A Lex Cath (1-4) this week in Lexington. 2) Ryle (6A) 5-0 – Ryle extended their undefeated streak this season, this time by beating 6A Campbell County 38-7 on the road. The Raider defense stymied the Camel offensive line, holding them to a mere 56 yards on the ground, but allowed another 181 yards in the air. Tanner Morgan and the Ryle offense put up 503 total yards offense, with RB Chisholm rushing for 89 yards and receiving another 108 for 3 total TDs. Ryle has the week off to rest and prepare for 6A George Rogers Clark (1-3) on September 30th. 1) Simon Kenton (6A) 5-0 – Simon Kenton did some work in distancing themselves from the rest of the pack last week by beating 6A Cooper 46-20 at Cooper. There’s not much denying that the Pioneers are #1 in Northern Kentucky…particularly when they’re putting up 540 yards against the #3 team in the area. QB Racke had a fantastic night, adding another 254 yards and 5 TDs passing to his numbers this season, while Markie Rider put up 8 solo tackles, and Brian Carter added another 7 tackles on the defensive side of the ball. Simon Kenton heads to Ft. Thomas to take on 5A Highlands on Friday. Trending Up: 5A Covington Catholic (4-1) – At the halfway point of their season last year, the Colonels were 1-4. This season they are 4-1, with their latest win coming over 1A Beechwood. 1A Dayton (2-2) – The Greendevils have turned around and beat two teams that they lost to last season, with a victory over 1A Bellevue and this week with a victory over New Miami (OH). 2A Holy Cross (3-1) – After a disappointing loss last week to Taft (OH), the Indians came back by shutting out 4A Scott 27-0. The Indians have only given up 34 points in the first 4 games of their season. Trending Down: 1A Beechwood (3-1) – A loss to a 5A team isn’t the worst thing imaginable for a 1A team, but 58 total yards in a game is never a good thing. The Tigers lost 10-44 to 5A Cov Cath this week. 5A Dixie Heights (2-2) – The Colonels struggled for a second week straight, this time losing 8-40 to the 6A Conner Cougars. 5A Highlands (1-4) – Two weeks in a row that teams have had a running clock against Highlands. The Birds dropped a 4th game straight, this week losing 18-45 to 6A St. Xavier. Player Of The Week: AJ Mayer (Covington Catholic) In his second year starting as the Colonels’ quarterback, junior AJ Mayer is starting to turn a few heads. Mayer passed for 302 yards and 3 TDs in Cov Cath’s 44-10 victory over 1A Beechwood on Friday. Game Of The Week: Beechwood (1A) vs. Holy Cross - Covington (2A) The 3-1 Indians are looking to be an improvement on last year’s team with a stout defensive front and a strong running game on the offensive side of the ball. The Tigers are 3-1, with a respectable defense of their own, and an athletic offense that’s built for speed. Beechwood will try to maintain their perfect winning record against Holy Cross, while the Indians are looking to stop the Tigers and get their first win against the Beechies.

 24. THE RANKINGS: 10) Lloyd Memorial (2A / 7-3) – Lloyd posted their second 7-win regular season in a row this year, closing things out with a 50-37 victory over the 4A Harrison County Thorobreds on the road. Lloyd will take on the 5-5 Carroll County Panthers on Friday, and if all goes as planned, they'll have likely rematches against Walton-Verona and New Cath. Among other feats, the Juggs will have to beat New Cath for the first time in over 15 years if they have any hopes of making their way to the 2A state finals. 9) Newport Central Catholic (2A / 5-5) – The Breds ended a rocky regular season this past Friday with a 14-31 loss to the 1A Beechwood Tigers, finishing out their season at 5-5. New Cath has had a season hallmarked with highs and lows, and strengths and weaknesses – and their record reflects that. They will be looking to shrug all that off and make a push in the 2A playoffs, though, when they start off the post-season by hosting the 4-6 Gallatin County Wildcats this Friday. 8) Scott (4A / 8-2) – There was little surprise to the loss the Eagles suffered this week, being beaten 13-44 by the 6A Simon Kenton Pioneers. However, what has been surprising to some has been the winning attitude and the best-ever regular season record posted by the Scott Eagles. Coach Wooley would beg to differ, no doubt, as he and the Eagles have been working their hardest to change the way folks see football in Taylor Mill over the last few years. Scott hasn’t had a playoff win since 2002 when they beat Bourbon County in the first round of the 3A state tournament, but they look to change that this Friday when host the 5-5 Rowan County Vikings. 6T) Conner (6A / 7-3) – There wasn’t much surprise when the Cougars beat the 4A Mason County Royals on Friday. Conner’s voluntary move up to 6A this year has been questioned by many, but the team has done their best to ignore all the editorial comments and to continue to improve throughout the season, as has been evidenced by their 7-3 record. The Cougars have drawn Campbell County in the first round – a team that they beat 36-14 three weeks ago. However, the second round is likely to be a re-match against the Cooper Jaguars, who handed them their latest loss two weeks ago. 6T) Beechwood (1A / 9-1) – The Tigers finished out their regular season strong this week by beating the rival 2A New Cath Thoroughbreds 31-14. Beechwood is continuing to prove themselves as the team to beat in 1A, and are undoubtedly going to be favored throughout most of the post-season. Their first game is at home this Friday when they take on the 4-5 Eminence Warriors. 5) Covington Catholic (5A / 3-7) – It’s a little surprising to see it in writing, but yes, a 3-7 team is finishing out the regular season as the 5th ranked team in Northern Kentucky. Cov Cath finished out their season against 6A Scott County, losing 56-35. Similarly, the NKY #4 Highlands Bluebirds lost to Scott County 54-28. That should allow for a little bit of scale in the scenario. Regardless, the Colonels will be starting off the postseason with an out-of-the ordinary home game at Dixie Heights’ Rice Mountjoy Stadium this Friday, when they host the 5-5 Anderson County Bearcats. 4) Highlands (5A / 5-5) – The Birds managed to avert a losing record in the regular season with a Week 10 victory over the winless 6A Boone County Rebels. Highlands’ mission is now to put their regular season behind them and to focus on the road ahead in the 5A playoffs. Fortunately, their first round matchup against the 7-3 Woodford County Yellow Jackets should be a relatively easy first week of post-season play. 3) Ryle (6A / 8-2) – Ryle finished out their regular season with a 31-14 win over the 5A Dixie Heights Colonels. Not a huge win for a team hoping to make a run in the 6A playoff bracket, but hopefully the Raiders’ first round match against the winless Boone County Rebels will give them an opportunity to get things rolling again on Friday. 2) Cooper (6A / 8-2) – No action this past week, but the Jags held onto the #2 spot in Northern Kentucky for the final week of the regular season. Cooper will have to have their offensive game plan re-worked a bit if they still haven’t seen the return of Torrey Cordell-Armstrong in their backfield, and the game this week against the Conner Cougars will be a good gauge of where Cooper’s offense stands as the 6A playoffs begin. 1) Simon Kenton (6A / 10-0) – 10-0. The only team in NKY to pull it off. The Pioneers came out of the regular season without a single loss, and largely unscathed. Not only that, but they proved that they deserve their spot by beating the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place teams. Now it’s on to the post-season. So long as the team stays healthy, I have no reason to believe that the ‘Neers will have any trouble making it to at least the 6A semi-finals. Player Of The Week: Frank Cetrulo (Bishop Brossart) Cetrulo rushed for 133 yards on 11 carries, had 2 receptions for a combined 30 yards, and made 5 tackles this past Friday in Bishop Brossart’s win over the Pendleton County Wildcats. Cetrulo helped the Mustangs finish their season with an impressive 9-1 record, an amazing feat for a team that nearly had to close up shop in the preceding offseason.
