3. Thanks to Northern Kentucky Family & Cosmetic Dentistry -"Making Northern Kentucky Smile" for sponsoring our 2017 Northern Kentucky Power Rankings! We encourage everyone to patronize all of our sponsors, and you can visit Northern Kentucky Family & Cosmetic Dentistry at 2047 Centennial Boulevard in Independence, KY. THE RANKINGS: 1) 5A Covington Catholic (10-0) – Covington Catholic managed to pull off their second 10-0 regular season in their program’s 50 year history. The Colonels wrapped up their regular season competition for the year with a 49-13 win over 6A Campbell County (6-4). QB AJ Mayer was 7-14 passing with 103yds and 2 TDs, and he rushed for another 13yds and 1 YD. RB Casey McGinness had a solid game, breaking to 1,000 yard mark 77yds rushing for 3 TDs. TDs were also scored by WRs Malachi Pike & Jack Coldiron, and backup QB Tyler Reusch. The Colonels 5A playoff battle begins against 4-6 Bullitt East, with a rematch against the 5-5 Highlands Bluebirds battle looming probable in the third round. Cov Cath will also have to get past 8-2 Bowling Green in the semifinals in order to reach the 5A finals in Lexington. 2) 6A Ryle (8-2) – The Raiders were undefeated in 6A competition during the regular season, and finished their season with a 43-18 win over Dixie Heights (3-7). QB Easton Pilyer was 7-12 with 78yds passing and 1 TD in the air. RB Jake Chisholm rushed for 182yds and 3 TDs, and Peyton Howorka ran for another 106yds and 1 TD. Jake Smith added another TD receiving, while Jackson Saladin led the D with 11 tackles and Spencer McKinney had another 10 tackles. The Raiders star off their playoff hunt in 6A against the Butler Bears (6-4). It will be one of the tougher first round battles in the state in the 6A classification. Male (8-2), St. Xavier (8-2) and Scott County (8-2) will also stand between Ryle and a spot in the 6A finals. 3) 6A Simon Kenton (9-1) – The Pioneers had their bye week this last week, and undoubtedly spent their week off busily preparing for the first round of the 6A playoffs. Simon Kenton has 7-3 Jefffersontown this Friday in the first round of the 6A playoffs, and will likely see 5-5 Ballard in the second round. Their biggest challenge of the season is the likelihood of facing 10-0 Trinity in the third round, two weeks before the 6A finals. 4) 1A Beechwood (8-2) – Beechwood finished out the regular season with yet another win against their out-of-district rival 2A Newport Central Catholic (5-5). The Tigers beat the Breds 34-6 on Friday, with QB Brayden Burch going 7-16 for 69yds and 1 TD passing. RB James Davis had 207yds rushing with 2 TDs, Logan Castleman added 1 TD rushing and another receiving, and RB Luke Jeffriesrushed for Beechwood’s remaining TD. Beechwood begin the 1A playoffs with a bye, before starting their work for the 1A title against the winner of the Bellevue (5-5) vs. Frankfort (6-4) game in round 2. The biggest competitor on the Tiger’s side of the 1A bracket is the Kentucky Country Day Bearcats (9-1), which they will be up against in the 3rd round. 5) 6A Campbell County (6-4) – The Camels faced 5A Covington Catholic (10-0) on Friday, and suffered a disappointing senior-day 49-13 loss to the Colonels. QB Austin Hoeh was held to 70yds passing and 26yds & 1 TD rushing, while RB Alex Dowds ran for 123yds and 1 TD in the loss. Campbell County takes on Eastern (5-5) in the 1st round of the 6A playoffs, and has a daunting 2nd round matchup against Trinity (10-0) lurking the week after. The Camels will have to dig deep for a hope at the 6A finals on December 3rd. 6) 5A Highlands (5-5) – The Birds managed to overt their second straight regular season losing record with a fifth win against the 6A Boone County Rebels (9-1). Highlands relied heavily on their running game, with a mere 60yds and no TDs passing. RB Larry Wilson ran for 142yds, while QB Cooper Schwalbach added another 91yds rushing and 2 TDs on the ground. The Bluebirds also had 2 TDs on Rebel turnovers, including a fumble recovery that junior Alex Starkey picked up and ran 67yds for a TD. The Birds will start off the 5A playoffs against the 6-4 Oldham County Colonels. South Oldham (9-1) has a 1st round bye and will play the winner of that game, before a likely match against Covington Catholic (10-0) in round three. 7) 6A Conner (4-6) – The Cougars’ struggle to find a groove has plagued them all season long, and it continued on Friday in a 28-3 loss to 6A Frederick Douglass (8-2). Conner’s offense only managed a total 129yds against Douglass, with 87yds passing and 42yds rushing. Jared Hicks and Clayton Boyd led the defense with 8 tackles a piece. Conner will have to put things together early in the 6A playoffs, as they face the 8-2 Male Bulldogs in the first round. If they make it past Male, they will be facing the winner of the Ryle (8-2) vs. Butler (6-4) game in round 2. The Cougars lost to Ryle 54-28 back on October 14th. 8) 4A Scott (7-3) – Scott put together a 7th win for their regular season, fending off the threatening 2A Lloyd Memorial Juggernauts late in the 4th quarter on Friday and pulling off a 23-22 win. The Eagles passing game struggled, with QB Chad Ohmer going 2-8 passing for 57yds and no TDs in the air. Nelson Perrin led the offense with 83yds rushing, and RBs Alex Thurza and David Patrick had TDs in the game. The remaining TD came on a short yardage rush by Chad Ohmer. The Eagles will have Rowan County (3-7) in the first round of the 4A playoffs, and will see the winner of the Johnson Central (8-2) vs. Mason County (7-2) game in week 2. Ashland (8-2) and Wayne County (9-1) are also lurking on Scott’s side of the 4A bracket. 9) 2A Lloyd Memorial (7-3) – Lloyd Memorial fought hard on Friday in their game against 4A Scott (7-3), but came up just short, losing 23-22 after a 4th quarter interception on their final possession. QB Jordan Fann was 3-9 with 73yds passing, and rushed for 85yds and 1 TD. RB Travon Mason rushed 17 times for 185yds and 2 TDs. Lloyd will see the 5-5 Green County Dragons in the first round of the 2A playoffs, and will have a likely game against Monroe County (7-3) if they make it past the Dragons. Glasgow (7-3), Newport Central Catholic (5-5), Lexington Christian (9-1) and defending 2A champs Danville (10-0) are all also on the Juggs’ side of the 2A playoff brackets. 10) 2A Newport Central Catholic (5-5) – The Thoroughbreds played three defending state championship teams this season, and came up with one win amongst the three, beating 2A Christian Academy Louisville (8-2) back on Sept 15th. They saw their third defending champ on Friday, and lost 34-6 to the 1A Beechwood Tigers (8-2). Stats have not been reported yet for the Breds’ loss, but the offense only managed a total 146yds against the Tigers. New Cath will face the 7-3 Metcalfe County Hornets in the first round of the 2A playoffs. If they move past the Hornets, they will likely have the Glasgow Scotties (7-3) in the second round. On the same side of the brackets as Lloyd Memorial (7-3), the Breds also have Lexington Christian (9-1) and defending 2A champs Danville (10-0) to beat in order to get to Kroger Field on December 2nd. HONORABLE MENTION: 1A Bracken County (8-2) – New Polar Bears coach Mike Brausch led Bracken County to a second straight eight win regular season, with the teams only losses coming from 1A Ludlow (8-2) and 1A Paris (9-1). Bracken County takes on Fairview (4-6) in the first round of the 1A playoffs. 1A Ludlow (8-2) – The Panthers had their best regular season in over two decades this year, with their only losses coming at the hands of 1A Beechwood (8-2) and 1A Paris (9-1). Ludlow takes on Louisville Holy Cross (5-5) in the first round of the 1A playoffs. 2A Walton-Verona (8-2) – The Bearcats bested their 2016 regular season by two wins this year, suffering their only losses to 1A Kentucky Country Day (9-1) and 2A Lexington Christian (8-2). Walton-Verona takes on Shawnee (0-10) in the first round of the 1A playoffs. PLAYERS OF THE YEAR: QB/LB Justin Blackburn (Ludlow) – During the regular season, Blackburn did it all for the Panthers. At QB, he went 56-103 with 1,060yds and 13 TDS passing, and rushed 197 times for 1,989yds and 33yds. That’s an average 199yds and 3.3 rushing TDs per game, on top of 1.3 TD passes per game. On the defensive side, he has led the team in tackles with 77 tackles, and also had 2 interceptions including one pick-6. RB Jake Chisholm (Ryle) – In his 10 games played this season, Chisholm has carried 233 times for 2,159yds and 32 TDs. He has averaged 216yds and 3.2 TDs per game. He also made his way to #7 all-time in the KHSAA’s record book for yards gained in a single game in his 449yd/6TD performance against Simon Kenton on October 20th. QB AJ Mayer (Covington Catholic) – During the regular season, Mayer has thrown for an average of 12 completions each game, with an average of 17yds per completion. Passing, he has gone 120-194 with 2,045yds and 23 TDs. He was only intercepted 3 times, and averaged over 200yds per game passing. He also rushed 38 times for 261yds and 9 TDs.

 5. BluegrassPreps.com is giving you a chance to show off your football knowledge statewide! The BluegrassPreps Regional Contests give you chances to pick games in different parts of the state for prizes each week of the regular season. There will be five regional contests every week. You will have a chance to pick the winners in each region -- NKY, EKY, Lexington/Central KY, Louisville, and WKY. This is the NKY Contest. Each region will have five games to pick from each week. We pick the games, and you will pick the winner of each game, assigning your picks a point value of 7-5-3-2-1. The first tiebreaker is picking the team (of the ten teams in the contest) that scores the most points. You don't have to pick the highest scoring team, you just have to pick a team that scores more points than the team(s) picked by the member(s) you are tied with. The second tiebreaker is time. This is a season long contest and you can enter in any or all regions that you wish. At the end of the regular season, the top two finishers in each region will compete during the playoffs for statewide bragging rights on Bluegrasspreps. If a contestant qualifies in more than one region, then the highest point total statewide from a non-qualifying contestant will advance as a Wild Card. The best part is, if you win a weekly contest, you will receive your choice of BGP merchandise! There will also be merchandise for the overall season winner. The deadline for all entries is 5:00pm EST Friday. Be sure to post your winners and assign each of them one of the following point values (7-5-3-2-1) based on how strongly you feel that that team will win. (Please note that if your selections are NOT in the specified format, your ENTIRE set of picks will be voided.) 7 5 3 2 1 1st Tiebreaker 2nd Tiebreaker: Time of post. 10. At the end of the regular season, the winner of each region and the next five highest point totals statewide (the Wild Cards) will compete during the playoffs for statewide bragging rights on BluegrassPreps. If you win more than one position in the postseason playoff, then your second slot will go to the next Wild Card. The games for Week 6 in the Northern Kentucky Area Regional contest are: Bellevue v. Owen County Bracken v. Dayton Carroll County v. Walton-Verona Cov Cath v. Highlands Newport v. 11. Thanks to Northern Kentucky Family & Cosmetic Dentistry - "Making Northern Kentucky Smile" for sponsoring our 2016 Northern Kentucky Power Rankings! We encourage everyone to patronize all of our sponsors, and you can visit Northern Kentucky Family & Cosmetic Dentistry at 2047 Centennial Boulevard in Independence, KY. Returning for 2016, BluegrassPreps is excited to again roll out weekly football Power Rankings for each of the regions around the state. With each week's Power Rankings, we will be looking to rank the top ten teams in each region - regardless of class - against the other teams in their region. Throughout the season, we will be accounting for the results of all the games throughout the region, including the strength of each opponent played, points scored, points allowed, along with several other statistics on each side of the ball. We will also be featuring a highlighted "Game Of The Week", and moving forward, will be re-capping the previous games of the week, as well as highlighting regional "Big Risers" and "Big Droppers" as various teams improve their performance and other teams fall back. The BGP Power Rankings will also feature a "Player Of The Week". THE RANKINGS: 10) Conner (6A) – Conner is probably the biggest overall question mark on the top 10. They finished up the 2015 season with a respectable 8-4 record, but the only fellow 6A program they were only able to put up wins on was a struggling Campbell County program. They also struggled against smaller teams on more than one occasion. This year Coach Trosper needs to find a new starting QB among the spots vacated by 19 graduated seniors from last season. The Cougars do have the benefit of a widespread combination of players returning across the board, but they are still left with an equal number of positions to fill. It’s tough to judge how the 2016 season will go for Conner at this point, but the general sniff-test says that there will be some positive strides made in Hebron this year. 9) Beechwood (1A) – Beechwood had an incredibly solid season in 2015, making their way to the 1A finals with only a single loss, suffered at the hands of 5A Covington Catholic. Coach Noel Rash will have his hands full this season, having to replace graduated senior standouts Kyle Fieger, Brett Slusher, and Ethan Stringer. There is a lot that remains to be seen for the Tigers this season, having to replace over half of their starters on both sides of the ball. Junior quarterback Brayden Burch is likely to get the nod as starter in 2016, and Aiden Justice, Logan Castleman, and Eddie Erdman look to be big names in Ft. Mitchell this upcoming season. 8) Newport Central Catholic (2A) – Not everyone expected New Cath to make it to the finals last year, especially after starting off their season to a 2-4 record, but the Breds were able to put things together when it mattered, only falling short to the Mayfield Cardinals by 10 points in the 2A championship game. This season they will have senior Patrick Henschen back at QB, but Coach Wagner is faced with a difficult task in finding an appropriate replacement to offensive workhorse Jacob Smith. Defensively, the line and linebacking corps will both be question marks, with many starters to be determined. Look for Austin Neff, Job Freppon and Kurtis Sutkamp to be leaders on the defensive team. 7) Dixie Heights (5A) – Coach Brossart has shown that he can make things happen at Dixie. It was only two seasons ago that he led the Colonels to the 6A state finals, finishing as runners up. Last year proved to be a struggle for Dixie though, after having graduated a very talented class of seniors. After fighting their way through a 3-8 season last year with a team built on young starters, the Colonels are going to come out swinging with virtually a full team of returning starters. Senior Noah Smedley will likely be leading the offensive charge at QB, with Winton Woods (OH) transfer Giante Hicks coming in to support at wide receiver. Seniors Cameron Barrett, Austin Rice, and Logan Robinson will be leading the defensive team for Dixie. 6) Scott (4A) – Coach Dan Woolley helped bring a lot of excitement to Taylor Mill in 2015. He led the Scott Eagles to the best season in their program’s history, finishing off with a 10-3 record. They will undoubtedly be looking to build on their successes this season and trying to lengthen their run in the playoffs. Relying equally on their returning senior and junior starters this season, and with many additional juniors and sophomores coming into the 2016 with significant playing time under their belts, things are looking good at Scott. The Eagles will be counting themselves amongst teams looking to find a new starting quarterback after losing Danny Fitzgerald to graduation. You can expect to see a big season offensively from both Nelson Perrin and Mi’rell Englemon. 5) Covington Catholic (5A) – In Coach Eddie Eviston’s second year as head coach he will certainly be looking to improve on the 0-4 start to last year’s season. The only change to their schedule this year will be replacing last season’s Cincy St. X game with a game against Oak Hills (OH). The big question for the Colonels program remains “Will this year be the year you beat Highlands?” Returning quarterback AJ Mayer will look to do just that, leading an offense that relies on a solid receiver corps, RB Casey McGinness, and line anchored by seniors Dylan Silbernagel and D1 recruit Hunter Ziegelmeyer. Defensively they will be looking to replace starters on the line, in the linebacking corps, and in the backfield, and will be turning to Alex Shelton, Kameron Butler, and Anthony Best for leadership. The Colonels look to be stronger than last year, but will still have to beat the Highlands Bluebirds in the 3rd round of the playoffs in order to make it to Bowling Green. 4) Highlands (5A) – The 2015 season didn’t exactly stand out as one of Highlands’ best years, with six losses on the season including three to other Northern Kentucky teams (Cooper, Ryle and Simon Kenton). However, to say that Highlands was “bad” last year would be completely inaccurate. Highlands shrugged off their rough start last year, visibly improving week to week throughout the season. This season the Birds will be looking to carry over their development from last year as they face a repeat of their regular season schedule. QB is one of the only skill positions Highlands will be replacing on either side of the ball, with Sr. Brady Gosney likely to be appearing under center. Replacing starters lost to graduation on the OL and DL will be their other challenge this season, but Coach Weinrich and the Highlands coaching staff are undoubtedly on top of things. Look to see Highlands make a deep playoff run this season, and potentially an appearance in the 5A championship game. 3) Cooper (6A) – Cooper was a surprise to many last season, but not so much to those inside the Jaguar football team. This year looks to be another solid year for the Jags with D1 recruit Dante Hendrix and Jaden Jackson returning to the offensive side of the ball for their senior years. However, Coach Borchers is tasked with developing a new starting quarterback this season. Their offensive line should be solid, but after losing their OL coach in the off season it will be interesting to see what kind of changes are made to play at the offensive line of scrimmage. The defensive skills positions look solid for the Jaguars, with Hendrix once again featured as a standout, but their D-line will be a big question mark going into the 2016 season, as well as some of their linebacking corps. 2) Ryle (6A) – Ryle had a few hiccups in their 2015 season, finishing 3rd in the NKY power rankings. With star quarterback Tanner Morgan, RB Jake Chisolm and WR Bryce Ashley all returning on offense, there isn’t much doubt about their offensive skill positions. Most of their 2016 OL saw significant starting time over the course of the season last year, and will bring a solid front to the Raider offense. On defense, similarly, there are numerous skills players returning, and senior middle linebacker Jackson High will lead their defensive charge. Coach Engler has a lot to work with at Ryle this season, and Ryle will be one of the toughest teams to beat amongst the NKY programs. 1) Simon Kenton (6A) – There’s no doubt that Simon Kenton was the top Northern Kentucky football program in 2015. They were the only NKY team to go 10-0 in the regular season, and had their season ended in the state semifinals to the 6A runners up, Lafayette. With third year starter Cameron Racke returning under center for his senior year, and Sr. Dylan Hampton in the backfield, there are high expectations for the Pioneer offense this year. The bigger task for Jeff Marksberry and the rest of the SK coaching staff will be replacing over half of their defensive starters for the 2016 season. However, with a solid group moving up from the undefeated 2015 junior varsity squad, there is a lot for the coaches to work with as they near the opening kickoff of the 2016 season. Simon Kenton is once again the team to beat in Northern Kentucky. Honorable Mention: Campbell County, Holy Cross Week 0 Game Of The Week: Scott (4A) vs. Newport Central Catholic (2A) The Eagles travel to Newport to take on the Thoroughbreds. Last year this game was decided by 1 point, with Scott eking out an 8-7 victory. It will be interesting to see how the two programs have developed over the subsequent months as they start things off at 7:00pm on Saturday, August 20th.

 24. Bluegrasspreps.com is giving you a chance to demonstrate your basketball expertise statewide! The Bluegrasspreps Regional Pick 'em contests give you opportunities to pick games in different parts of the state for prizes EACH WEEK. There will be five regional contests every week. You will have a chance to pick the winners in each region -- NKY, EKY, Bluegrass, Louisville, and WKY. This is the NKY contest. The NKY Contest is sponsored by Joe Lay & Sons Plumbing. Joe Lay & Sons are proud sponsors of all NKY high school basketball teams. For all of your plumbing needs please contact Joe Lay & Sons at: Joe Lay & Sons Plumbing in Northern Kentucky and Southern Ohio Each region will have five games to pick from each week. We pick the games, and you will pick the winner of each game, assigning your picks a point value of 7-5-3-2-1. The first tiebreaker is picking the team (of the ten teams in thecontest) that scores the most points. You don't have to pick the highest scoring team, you just have to pick a team that scores more points than the team(s) picked by the member(s) you are tied with. The second tiebreaker is time. Early bird gets the worm if thecontestcomes down to the second tiebreaker. This is a season long contest and you can enter in any or all regions that you wish. At the end of the regular season, the winner of each region and the next five highest point totals statewide (the Wild cards) will compete during the special Sweet 16 Contest for statewide bragging rights on Bluegrasspreps and a grand prize. If you win more than one position in the postseason playoff, then your second slot will go to the next Wild card. The more contests you enter, the better your chances of qualifying for the Sweet 16 Contest. If you win a weekly contest, you will receive a quality prize.Check here for a reference. The deadline for all entries is 5 p.m. (ET) Friday. Make sure you post your winners and assign each of them one of the following point values (7-5-3-2-1) based on how strongly you feel that that team will win. (Please note that if your selections are NOT in the specified format, your ENTIRE set of picks will be voided) 7 5 3 2 1 1st Tiebreaker: Team scoring the most points. 2nd Tiebreaker: Time of post. Here are the NKY games for Week 7: Bracken County - Grant County Boone County - Conner Ryle - Cooper Mason County - Rowan County Silver Grove - Robertson County
