  3. They are talented, but not sure that they're utilizing that talent effectively. Any team would be happy to have Jeramiah Israel, but I think that Walker is still a project that is deleveloping, but hasn't quite peaked yet. Sebastian is a reliable addition, but not moving mountains. Collins is a reliable 3 point shooter. They have the pieces, but aren't as dominant as some might hope.
  4. Just merely for shameless bragging, just a reminder that in my pre-season review, I had Conner at Number 2, and sang their praises, and said that I was high on the Cougars going into the season. Here as of late they have not disappointed. They’re dynamite shooters.
  5. *Teams on this list with any losses are still undefeated against Kentucky competition. As of 01/09/23 there are 2 undefeated teams. Region 1 - McCracken County - 14-0 Region 9 - Covington Catholic - 12-1
  6. Thanks bro...I appreciate it. Still very weak, but aching to get back into the swing of things. Fighting hard.

Region 1 - McCracken County - 12-0 Region 9 - Covington Catholic - 11-1 Warren Central of Region 4 lost to Madison Central 60-43 Pleasure Ridge Park of Region 6 lost to Evangel Christian 70-67 Mason County of Region 10 lost to Oldham Co 65-51
  8. Highlands plays McCracken this week. Dec 27 at South Oldham. Should be a good one. Hopefully Will Herald has recovered fro the flu by then.
  9. 9th Region Review and Rankings (Week 4) Happy Holidays to all, and hope you are staying warm, and your pipes haven't frozen like mine have. ☹️ All games this week are over and done with, and many holiday classics had been cancelled on Friday and Saturday due to the extreme cold weather. I figured that there's no time like the present to get the conversations rolling about what we saw this past week in 9th Region hoops. 1) Covington Catholic (8-0) What can we say about the Colonels that haven't already been said? They're tough, they dominate, they win, and they are presently the only remaining undefeated team in the 9th Region. While Evan Ipsaro is averaging 26.8 ppg, there are many contributors on this Colonel squad that can get it done. This past week the Colonels played a highly contested game with Newport Central Catholic where midway through the 3rd quarter the Colonels were only up by 1 point. Then in their usual fashion they turned up the power and began taking over winning 78-62. Dec. 27-30 the Colonels will travel to Ocala, Fla (as they do every year) to partake in a big time competitive tournament with excellent teams from around the country. I presently can't find the list of teams, but you can bank on it being a lot of very good teams. Go Colonels, and we're pulling for you to represent the 9th Region in classic fashion. 2) Highlands (10-1) This week saw the Bluebirds compete in the Mason County Invitational. They were without the services of their highest score Will Herald who averages 22 ppg who was down with the flu. Right out of the gate they had to confront a very tough Henry Clay from the 11th Region. Things for the first time this season didn't go the Bluebird's way and they lost 69-60, their first loss of the season. From there they went on to dismantle 10th Region's Augusta 91-53, then 16th Region's Fleming County 104-76 taking 5th place in the Tournament. Next up for the Birds is the 8th Region's South Oldham Christmas Tournament Dec 27-29 where they play 1st Region's undefeated McCracken County. 3) Holy Cross (6-2) The Indians beat Boone County this week 93-67, then Roger Bacon 69-36. On Dec27-29 they'll play in the White Greer & Maggard Holiday Classic @ Lexington Catholic where they'll face a tough Lyon County from the 2nd Region headed by prolific scorer Jr. Travis Perry who is on his way to possibly break the all time Kentucky High School scoring record held by King Kelley Coleman from Wayland in the 1950's. He's presently averaging 30.2 ppg. Jacob Meyer from Holy Cross is averaging 34.8 ppg, and Javier Ward is averaing 18.6 ppg. 4) Conner - (5-3) This week saw the Cougars beat the Cincinnati College Prep Academy 90-59, then 8th Region's Shelby County in the Scott Winter Classic 82-44. On Dec 27-28 they'll play in the Gussler Holiday Invitational first facing Dublin Coffman (Dublin, Oh), then on the 28th they'll face St. Charles (Columbus,Oh), Then on Dec 29 they play in the Beacon Orthopaedics/Tri-Health Holiday Hardwo Classic where they'll face Dublin Jerome (Dublin, Oh). As of late the Cougars have been showing us their winning ways with a balanced attack of lots of talent. 5) Newport - (8-2) The Wildcats are turning heads with their plethora of talent. This week they beat Holmes 52-19, they Newport Central Catholic 69-52. Dec 28-30 they'll play in the Grace Health Cumberland Falls Invitational where on Dec 28 they'll play 13th Region's Bell County. On Dec 29 they'll face 13th Region's Corbin, then on Dec 30th TBD. 6) Cooper - (5-5) The Jags seem to have found a way to win without their big guy Caleb Brooks who is out for the season due to an ACL knee injury. This week they went 2-1 in the 13th Region's South Laurel Legacy Nissan Dribble Drive Challenge. They first beat Knox Central 71-31, then Owen County 48-44, finally falling to the hosts South Laurel in the championship game 61-43. In both of their wins Sophomore Yamil Rondon earned the player of the games awards. Dec 28-29 the'll play in the 3rd Region's Independence Bank Classic @ Owenboro Sports Center where on the 28th they'll face 3rd Region's Butler County, then 3rd Region's Brekinrigde County on the 29th. 7). Lloyd - (5-3) This week the Juggs lost to a tough Pulaski County 66-60 from the 12th Region in the Lee's Famous Recipe Holiday Classic. Then in the classic they beat Wellspring Guardians from (Richmond, Ky) 91-33. They they took care of Dixie 56-46. They have no games scheduled until Jan 3rd where they'll face Beechwood. Sound like a good test game to see just where Lloyd and Beechwood are. 8). St. Henry - (3-7) The Cru are a puzzling bunch. I believe that they're a very good team yet however in their 7 straight losses they couldn't quite manage to finish. Coach Dave Faust is chasing the all time Coaches winning record presently held by Coach Kenny Shields at 460. Faust is presently 454 so even with trouble winning, I do believe he'll break the record this season. He needs 7 more wins to break the record with 461. 9). Newport Central Catholic - (6-5) The Breds are a bit up and down, but there's no doubt that they're a spirited bunch who comes to play. The began their week facing Covington Catholic which is a tall task for anyone and they managed to only be down 1 points well into the 3rd quarter before the Colonels do what they do and take over. Final score was a respectible 78-62. They went on to beat Williamstown 84-68 in the Swauger Holiday Classic at Bellevue. They followed that with a loss to Newport 69-52. Players from NewCath are determined to see a different outcome when they face the Wildcats in a district seeding game Jan 19th at NewCath. On Dec 28th they'll play in the Bill Perkins Holiday Classic at 13th Region's Williamsburg where they'll face 14th Region's Lee County. 10) Beechwood - (4-5) After beginning the season at 0-3, the Tigers have won 4 of their last 6 games while showing that they are now gelling. It's to be seen how they'll fair against some of the top teams in the 9th Region, but there's no doubt they have serious talent with Cameron Boyd who is averaging 23.3 ppg, with the great guard play of Cash Harney who is averaging 15 ppg. This week they beat Ryle 66-46 in the Swauger Holiday Classic at Bellevue. Then in the classic they lost to South Oldham 76-55. Dec 27-29 they'll be playing in the 8th Region's South Oldham Christmas Tournament where they'll face Seneca from the 7th Region 11. Boone County - (1-8) 12. Ryle (3-5) 13. Dixie (2-6) 14. Ludlow (8-2) 15. Holmes (0-9) 16. Heritage Academy (8-3) 17. Dayton (1-7) 18. Villa Madonna (3-7) 19. Bellevue (3-7) 20. Covington Latin (0-9)

  14. Not that NewCath would’ve won, but sometimes officiating can be like a noose on the neck when a team is trying to gain advantage. Sometime in the 3rd quarter CovCath was up by 1. Jase Iles is fighting for a ball with a CovCath player. He rips the ball away. Either it was a jump ball, or it belonged to Jase, yet Jase is called for a foul. The very next NewCath possession Jase is driving to the basket, and gets called for a bogus charge. You could see the NewCath coaches were livid, and I don’t blame them. The Breds were trying to take the lead, and never had the chance to. Sometimes getting the lead can change a team's momentum, and while the Colonels soon began to take over, it might’ve been an entirely different situation if NewCath would have earned the lead. I can’t stand it when I see officiating affect the game, and while I’m at it I can’t stand fouls being called for clean blocks.
  15. BluegrassPreps.com 9th Region - Week 3 - Review and Rankings Week 3 in the 9th saw numerous teams partake in various holiday classics, either locally, or around the state. Only a couple of games were 9th Region relevant to allow us to see even more clearly the strengths in teams. 1. Covington Catholic - (7-0) The Colonels record remains unblemished after 7 outings. They're establishing themselves as a team that will dominate and overwhelm especially in the 2nd half. Some teams have hung with them for awhile only to see their wheels fall off in the 4th quarter. We're also recognizing now that Evan Ipsaro is a bit of a superman. In the Holy Cross game he played sick, and threw his guts up at halftime, only to return to lead his team to victory with 28 points. I don't know about you but if I throw my guts up, I'm done. Nothing more but done done done. This past week the Colonels took care of business with a feisty Holy Cross Indians who were actually in the lead by 3 points at halftime only to lose 86-66. The Colonels also faced off with La Salle (Cincinnati) where GCL games are always a dog fight, and they prevailed in impressive fashion 88-69. The Colonels only have one game this coming week when the travel up to The Hill in Newport to face the Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds on Monday Dec. 19. 2. Highlands - (7-0) The Bluebirds of Highlands are also the only other team in the 9th who has an unblemished schedule. The word is out that these guys can score the ball in bunches and rack up scores in the 80's, 90's, and 100's. Presently after 7 games they're averaging 89 ppg with 4 players averaging in double figures. They don't mind shooting the ball at a rapid rate. They're not a team sitting back contemplating their attack. Their attack is to aim to quickly get the ball to the basket and shoot, or drop 3's at a high rate like it ain't no thing. They're fun to watch if you like a lot of offensive production, and who doesn't? This past week saw them beat Campbell Co 101-85, an in their own Carespring Holiday Classic they beat Cincinnati Trailblazers Home School 78-53, and then Boyle Co. from the 12th Region 76-68. This coming week the Bluebirds will partake in the Mason Co. Invitational Tournament Dec 20-22, They'll face a tough 11th Region team Henry Clay to kick off the tourney. 3. Holy Cross - (4-2) The Indians are beginning to gel with their new role players who are proving to be effective to fill out their starting 5. Players Matthew Dreas, and Jacob Smith are fitting in quite nicely to help out. This past week the Indians only had one game with region's number 1 team, the Covington Catholic Colonels. Meyer and crew held their own and were even ahead at halftime by 3, but the 2nd half proved to be their undoing when the Colonels began to turn it on. Meyer got his 33 points, his average, in this losing effort 86-66. Holy Cross has two games this week, first on Mon Dec 19 at Boone Co., then Thur Dec 22 at Roger Bacon (Cincinnati). 4. Conner - (3-3) Getting Landen Hamilton back from injury has given the Cougars a big boost. Their team is proving to have a good assortment of talented players getting it done, but you can't deny that the experience and talent of Hamilton goes a long way. This past Friday night they beat a Caleb Brooks-less Cooper Jags, who rumor has it has an ACL injury, and if true his season is sadly over. Hate to see this, and especially with such a high spirited player that was unofficially their team leader. Conner plays Sun Dec 18 against Cincinnati College Prep Academy at Hughes, and then they'll partake in the Scott Winter Classic Dec 21-23. They'll play Shelby Co. from Region 8 to kick things off. 5. St. Henry - (2-5) While their win/loss record doesn't express it, the Crusaders are for real, and will strongly stay the course in every match up that they're in. It's just my opinion but when it all plays out by the end of the season St. Henry will be right there in the thick of things. This past weekend they lost to St. Xavier (KY) in the Carespring Holiday Classic at Highlands 60-58 then their 2nd game in the classic with Knot Central was cancelled for whatever reason. Tues Dec 20 the Cru hosts Central Hardin from the 5th Region, and again a home game on Weds Dec 21 against Campbell Co. then Thurs Dec 22 at Villa Madonna. 6. Newport - (6-2) The Wildcats are beginning to gel with tons of talent, and they even got another talented boost in junior Jabari Covington joining the team. They're quick and relentless as they play in a flurry being ball thieves on the attack. They've got something to say, and they're building a team that aim strongly to be right in the mix by season's end. This past week they shocked by impressively handling Lloyd 55-38, beating Dixie 55-33, then Ryle 54-44. This coming week they'll be playing in the Swauger Holiday Classic at Bellevue Dec 21-23 where on the 21st they'll face off with the Holmes Bulldogs. 7. Cooper - (3-4) It's a huge loss for the Jags to have lost their highly spirited team leader big guy Caleb Brooks to injury, and it's undeniable that it's going to affect the Jags' season. They're still tough as nails with a feisty lock down defense that will pick your pocket time and again making teams pay close attention to their ball handling skills. Sophomore Yamil Rondon is proving to be quite a force for the jags and the guy who stirs their drink as a fast and furious point guard. These Jags won't be laying down, and now they must adjust and figure out how to stay relevant. This past week they lost to Simon Kenton 32-30 (They really need to find some offence). Then they lost to a talented Conner Cougars 55-42. This coming week they'll be playing in the Legacy Dribble Drive Challenge at South Laurel in the 13th Region Dec 20-22 where they kick off the classic on Dec 20 against Knox Central from the 13th Region. 8. Lloyd - (3-2) We really don't know what to make of Lloyd so far. It's completely possible that they'll pull it all together by season's end, but right now they're a bit up and down. They began the week by losing to Newport 55-38 in a game most expected to be much closer. They no doubt have talent with NKU commit Jeremiah Israel, and big guy sophomore EJ Walker who has too many offers to count. Sophomore Isaiah Sebastian is a very talented guard, and sophomore Elijah Collins has proved that he can effectively knock down the 3. It's now about making those pieces work for them. They beat Belmont of Dayton, Oh 64-47. On Weds Dec 21 they'll play in the Lee's Famous Recipe Holiday Classic at Madison Southern in the 11th Region. They will face 12th Region's Pulaski Co. 9. Newport Central Catholic - (5-3) The Thoroughbreds are proving to be a highly spirited focused team, and really this is not a surprise from Newport Central Catholic as they traditionally always bring a competitive team to the fold. This past week they lost to Hughes (Cincinnati) 89-74, then beat Holmes 70-48. Life this week won't be easy as they will host Covington Catholic on Mon Dec 19 up on The Hill. They also will face Williamstown at the Swauger Holiday Classic at Bellevue on Weds Dec 21. 10. Beechwood (3-4) Beechwood had a rough start to the season, but seem to be beginning to find themselves. They competed this weekend in the Stockyard Bank and Trust Challenge at Rowan Co. in the 16th Region, and came away to two wins, first against Shelby Valley from the 15th Region 49-47, then Lewis Co. from the 16th Region 57-47. They will compete in the Swaguar Holiday Classic at Bellevue Dec 21-23 and will kick things off by facing Ryle on Wed Dec 21. 11. Boone County - (1-5) 12. Ryle - (2-4) 13. Dixie - (1-4) 14. Ludlow - (6-2) 15. Holmes - (0-7) 16. Heritage Academy - (7-1) 17. Dayton - (1-7) 18. Bellevue - (3-3) 19. Villa Madonna - (2-6) 20. Covington Latin - (0-7) Special Team Spotlight In case anyone hasn't noticed, The Heritage Academy Eagles have begun their season at 7-1. Their only loss was to Ludlow 69-57. They are comprised of mostly freshman and sophomores, with their lead scorer being sophomore Landon Warner who is averaging 20 ppg, just as he did last season as a freshman. They beat Dayton by 22, 85-63, and dismantled Bellevue 76-35. There's excitement being generated at Heritage this season, as they also think of the next couple of seasons as these guys gain even more experience. Definitely a team to keep an eye on this season as well as the next couple of years.
  16. Well, for starters they have arguably the best player in the region in senior Jacob Meyer who is averaging 33 ppg, and with him senior Javier Ward who is averaging 20 ppg, They’ve also a 7 footer in senior Sam Gibson with a handful of other role players who are proving to be effective. They’re definitely top 5 in the region, and can score the ball very well. They may not be at the very top of the region, but they are competitive enough to hold their own with every top team in the region. As far as when they last won the 9th I cannot say. An Indians faithful out there might be able to help with that one.
  17. Glad that you are drawing attention to them. I’ve also been taking notice of their great start. Their starting 5 is mostly comprised of freshman and sophomores led by sophomore Landon Warner who is averaging 20 ppg, just as he did last season as a freshman. Not only did they take care of Bellevue in commanding fashion, they also beat Dayton by 22. These guys, if they stay together look to have a few good seasons on tap, and while they’re doing pretty good right now, just think how they’ll be in a couple of years. Go Eagles!
  18. I expect a great game. I wonder what Brooks' status is?
  19. That was just nuts. The pass was so accurate that Chase didn’t need to adjust his positioning one iota. Turn around and bip right in his hands. Nuts.
  20. BluegrassPreps.com 9th Region - Week 2 - Review and Rankings: Week 2 in the 9th Region is in the books, and we saw which teams are dominating, developing, or simply struggling. Whereas the region this season appeared to be wide open with much parity, it still sorta does, but CovCath’s domination for example is showing us that just like in many recent years, they are the team to beat. They are with little doubt the favorite. Covington Catholic (5-0) This past week saw Coach Ruthsatz move past Dan Tieman as the winningest coach in CovCath history. The Colonels began the week with a highly contested match against St. Henry where the game was in question until the 4th quarter when the Colonels began to dominate. The Cru showed that they can play with them, but the Colonels know how to finish games to get the ‘W’ 70-61. As expected Evan Ipsaro stirs their drink, and is displaying vividly why he is arguably the best player in the 9th. The Colonels followed that win up with a 79-70 win over a feisty Reed Brothers driven Bracken Co. in the St Elizabeth Sports Medicine 9/10 Region Challenge. This coming week sees the Colonels host the high scoring Holy Cross Indians Tues Dec. 13, featuring of course the dynamic duo of Jacob Meyer, and Javier Ward. Highlands (5-0) Averaging 89.6 ppg after 5 games the Bluebirds pick up where they left off last season of being one of the tops in the state in scoring. They sure can turn it on and score in bunches, overwhelming their opponents. This past week saw the Birds in a highly contested game against St. Henry where the Cru at one point was up by a bunch, but the Birds came flying back going on a scoring tear to secure the win 88-80. In the Donate Life Challenge they got past Jeffersontown in a high scoring affair 91-83. This week sees the Birds hosting Campbell Co on Tues. Dec. 13, and a home game on Friday Dec. 16 with the Cincinnati Trailblazers Home School as they host the Carespring Holiday Classic. On Saturday Dec. 17 the Birds will face Boyle Co in the same classic. Holy Cross (4-1) The Indians put on a good show this weekend coming in 3rd place in the Billy Hicks Classic. First they beat John Hardin 82-47, then lost a tough one against Top 10 team Great Crossing 75-60. They recovered and took care of Scott Co. 95-72. This coming week sees the Indians with a tall task of facing the region’s best Covington Catholic Tues. Dec. 13. Can they do what so far no one has yet to do, or will the Colonels continue to dominate. This is a good measuring stick game to see just how close these two teams are. For those wondering, Jacob Meyer is presently averaging 32.8 ppg not counting their game against Scott Co. where the stats are yet available, and Javier Ward is averaging 20 ppg. Cooper (3-2) The Jags have steadily been showing their strengths led by their quick as lightning point guard sophomore Yamil Rondon. This week saw them take one on the chin with their loss against Elder (Cincinnati) 54-44. They then took care of business with NewCath 77-66, and in the John Turner Classic at Newport they beat Linton-Stockton (IN) 73-61. This coming week sees them host the Pioneers of Simon Kenton Tues Dec. 13, then a tough 33rd District matchup at Conner Fri Dec. 16. St. Henry (2-4) The Cru has had some tough games this past week with the top 2 teams in the region in CovCath and Highlands, and while they contended on strongly against them the wins eluded them. They’re better than their record might suggest. They first lost to CovCath 70-61, then Highlands 88-80. In the John Turner Classic they must’ve had a hangover from the previous night’s Highlands game because they really didn’t have it against St. Xavier (Cincinnati) in the 51-27 loss. Their next battles will be in the Carespring Holiday Classic at Highlands Dec 16, and Dec 17 where they take on St. Xavier (Louisville), and Knox Central respectively. Lloyd (2-1) The Juggs got their season started this week with 3 games. First an easy 34th district matchup with Villa Madonna 62-28. Next they puzzled the region with an at home loss against a spirited Ryle Raiders. Ryle is developing, but better than advertised. They then took care of business at that John Turner Classic topping Roger Bacon (Cincinnati) 49-42. This week sees them host the Newport Wildcats on Tues Dec. 13, then they travel to Dayton, Oh to take on Belmont Sat Dec. 17. Conner (3-2) The Cougars went 2-1 this week, first with a win over Dixie 68-41, then Beechwood 73-61, then they lost in the John Turner Classic at Newport against Elder (Cincinnati) 53-42. For their benefit they now have again the services of sharp shooter Landon Hamilton who needless to say adds a much needed spark for the Cougars. This week sees them in a heated 33rd District battle as they host the Cooper Jags Fri Dec 16, then on Sun Dec 18 they’ll take on Cincinnati College Prep Academy at Hughes High School in the Queen City Showcase. Newport (3-2) The Wildcats went 2-1 this week with first a win against Boone Co. 74-57, a loss to Campbell Co. 61-40, then a win against the Scott Eagles in their John Turner Classic 58-45. The Wildcats have a busy week first with a big game at Lloyd on Tues Dec 13, then a home game against Dixie on Thurs Dec 15, then finally a home game against Ryle on Sat Dec. 17. Newport Central Catholic (4-2) The Breds continue to show that they’re better this season than originally advertised. They started the week with a win over Scott 82-75, then a tough loss to the Cooper Jags 77-66, and a loss to Campbell Co in the John Turner Classic 88-61. This coming week sees them at Hughes (Cincinnati) on Tues Dec. 13, then a game at Holmes Sat Dec 17. 10. Ryle (2-2) The Ryle Raiders make their first appearance in the Top 10 by merit of beating the Lloyd Juggernauts in Erlanger 56-51. They began the week also with a win over Holmes 61-44. They’ll be at Boone Co. Fri Dec 16, then at Newport Sat Dec 17. Beechwood (1-4) Dixie (1-3) Boone County (0-5) Holmes (0-4) Ludlow (3-2) Heritage Academy (4-1) Bellevue (3-0) Villa Madonna (1-4) Dayton (1-5) Covington Latin (0-6) Some key games this week: Holy Cross at CovCath Tues Dec 13 Highlands hosts Campbell Co. Tues Dec 13 Cooper at Conner Fri Dec 16 Newport at Lloyd Tues Dec 13
