Newport Central Catholic 72 Bishop Brossart 56

Recommended Posts

At times this season the Brossart Mustangs have struggled to put together a complete 32 minutes of solid basketball. On Saturday night on the Carothers Road Hill it was the opening five minutes of play that proved our undoing. That and the fact that the Breds had Brennan Hall and we didn't.

In those first five minutes the Breds ran out to a 14-3 lead and set the tone, but the Mustangs, as we have done so often this season recovered and attempted to make a game of it, closing to 55-46 and 57-48 early in the fourth quarter prior to the Breds going on a mini 5-0 run, which was enough to pave the way for the 72-56 final score.

During those opening five minutes Brendan Luken used his sizable girth to net three baskets, spearheading a 22-14 first quarter advantage. Hamberg netted four 3-pointers in the first half, and Ethan Eilerman struck for two long-balls and a pair of traditional buckets to contribute 10 to the Mustangs first half effort. Freshman Carson Schirmer introduced himself to the Breds audience by scoring 7 of his 8 total points in the third quarter. On the night Hamberg tallied 17 points on 4 of 6 shooting from beyond the arc, and Eilerman ground out 19 points that included three treys. When it is all said and done, NCC senior, Brennan Hall was the difference maker, leading all scorers with 24. The Breds held a nine point advantage from the charity stripe going 17 of 27, while the Mustangs countered with 8 of 14.

With the win the Breds extend their home game dominance over the Mustangs to 7 straight, but will be forced to shuffle the deck into the future as this NCC unit graduates 7 seniors, who accounted for 66 points on the night.

The Mustangs, now 12-11 move on to host Bracken County on Grade School night on Tuesday, while the Breds, who improve to 13-9, face a 37th District seeding battle with Newport on Monday.
