Considering the only issue has been the 1st inning you have to just let him work through it and try to figure out a way to get him on track and in rhythm right out of the gate. If he wasn't so good after the rough start a more drastic measure would be in store, but right now it is mental and not physical as the stuff is clearly there after the 1st...

Does it really matter why it happens or when it happens? MLB is a results-oriented business/game. Can we hang our hat on "well if he can only get past the 1st?"

I'm saying he has been nasty outside of the rough starts, so it is not a matter of him getting smacked around because his stuff is sub-par. This isn't escaping trouble over and over again. It's a mental issue, and on the coaches to get it figured out so that he is nasty from the jump...

How long do you wait for the mental part to take effect?

Even if he continues to have first-inning failures that put the Reds in a hole?

As long as he is still shut down the rest of the way, yes...

Let the bullpen pitch the first inning and bring EV in for the 2nd.

So 5 IP per game, 6.75 ERA, and a WHIP of 1.7 is acceptable? Adding stress on the bullpen?

If he continues to fail why does it matter if he's good "most of the innings?"

Why? If he's taking you out of ballgames and causing you to go early to an overused bullpen because of his high pitch counts, then he's not doing much good, regardless of what his potential might be or the fact that all of his innings but one are good. For the first time in a long time, the Reds have some nice options in the pitching department and it would be silly to stick with some guy toting a 6.75 ERA simply because he is - or was - designated as the "ace." I think if he keeps this up for another couple of starts, he will be allowed to "figure things out" in Louisville.

Not good. I am thinking like you. I either need to stop drinking or start drinking more heavily.

If you made me bet we will see him overcome his 1st inning challenges. I'm just not sure how long we should wait.

It's an overreaction to a small sample size. If it is June and there is still an issue get back to me...

So do I. And at some point I think that Bryan Price has to be held accountable for some of Volquez' first-inning woes.
