Phillip's favorite team, and player at it again.Three hit batsmen and a bench-clearing incident with two MLB managers jawing back and forth.
You would think the Cardinals and Nationals would save up that kind of intensity for the regular season, right?
Not Monday. According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the bench-clearing incident happened during today’s 7-2 Nats win, and got Cardinals reliever Miguel Bastista kicked out of the game.
The conflict started when ace Chris Carpenter (4.2 IP, 7H, 4ER, 3BB, K) plunked former Red Laynce Nix in the back in the fifth inning. Nats pitcher Livan Hernandez responded later by beaming Colby Rasmus. That set up the final retaliation -Batista nailing Ian Desmond in the back.
According to the report, there were no punches thrown during the meeting in the middle of the field, just jawing. That included managers Tony La Russa and Jim Riggleman.
Per the report, Carpenter had this to say when asked if he intentionally threw at Nix:
“Not at all,” Carpenter said. He then went on to describe the difficulty he had wedging pitches inside on lefthanded hitters like Nix with much success. “It was either cutting or moving back over the plate.”
