    Jim Thome: In or Out

He's getting ready to bop #500. Will that put him in?

    I say no.

I think 600 would put him in, but not 500.

The lack of hits, tells me Thome is one dimensional.

If you could get in the HOF by just being a really good guy, he would already be in...

On Mother's Day, May 14, 2006, Thome was one of more than 50 hitters who brandished a pink bat to benefit the Breast Cancer Foundation.

Off the field, Thome is putting all 10 of his nieces and nephews through college. It was reported on ESPN's SportsCenter that shortly after his nephew, Brandon, was paralyzed in a tragic accident, he asked Jim to hit a home run for him; not only did Thome fulfill the request but he hit two homers in the game. In a 2007 poll of 464 Major League Baseball players, he was voted the 2nd most friendly player in a tie with Mike Sweeney.

He is a little bit one-dimensional, but in that respect he's a victim of his eye at the plate (1450 walks).

4th fewest ABs in MLB history to get to 500 homers. I say he gets in, but maybe not on the first ballot, if he gets to 550 HR, 1,500 runs and 1,500 RBI in two more years and keeps the average hovering around the .280 mark.

While I voted "no," there are not many players whose HRs I enjoy watching more than Thome.

No, not "screw that". He is not a Hall of Famer as a player. But, then, there are an ever increasing glut of members in the Hall who have no business being there. However, he may well be a Hall of Famer as a human being and that should count for a lot more even in this age of declining civility and increasing selfishness. Baseball, and all professional sports, need more Jim Thomes and less of the types who are worshipped by the dullard multitudes.
