Henry County 52 Collins 49Final from the 8th Region.Advertisement
Mar 2, 11, 10:48 PM #2Henry County was simply more disciplined tonight. I thought Collins' size and quickness advantages would cause Henry problems, but the Titans just weren't patient enough on offense to take advantage of them. Henry packed it in with a 2-3 zone most of the night, and Collins got happy shooting tons of threes...something that is really not their forte as a team (29% shooting beyond the arc on the season as a team). Collins didn't hit their first three until about 3 minutes remained....they did wind up hitting four in the final three minutes, which helped them rally from a double-digit deficit, but it was too little, too late.
Spud Baldwin was a pain in Collins' neck all night , offensively and defensively. Schroeder had three threes for the winners off the bench. And the Wildcats played pretty much even-steven on the glass with the taller, bigger Titans.
Congrats to the Wildcats...but also kudos to Coach Curtis Turley and the Titans, who finish their first-ever season with 18 wins. Not too shabby at all.
Wildcats play Oldham County at 6:30 pm on Monday...

Henry County has a chance to win the Region. They have enough quickness and athleticism they could pull it off. How about the storyline for Coach Holland. He leaves Henry County to go to Oldham for a better chance to win the Regional tournament and now in his 2nd year he will have to play his former school for a chance to play in the Regional final.

comfortable in their own skinI was not completely suprised by the outcome of this game. Collins has been on a rollercoaster all year. One coach, who has watched the Titans closely all season, made the assesment that this team never could find an identity. They never could settle in on a style of play. I fell the opposite is true of Henry. They are completely comfortable in their "own skin". Coach Springate does a great job matching the talents of his players to their strengths as a team. Not having any height, he surrenders the rebound battle, not having his players fight for free throw rebounds. Packs in a zone and dares the other team to beat them from the perimeter. Having smaller guards attack, attack, attack the lane on the offensive end. He takes full advantage of the inside out offense. Col. Mike nailed it when he used the term discipline. This team does not try to do more than what it can. They stay within themselves and play to their strengths.
I think Coach Springate is building something special up at HCHS. He's beefed up his schedule and looks to be making it even tougher next year. Won the district for the first time in 40 years. He's got young size and even though they lose Baldwin and Schroader, he still as some quickness and decent perimiter shooting coming back.
Collins will be even better next year. They've got some quality basketball players coming up. They may not be the flashy "athletes" that normally come out of Shelby Co. but they know the game and have very solid fundamentals. I think they will match up better to Turley's style of play and hopefully will form an identity that can win games.
