Covington Catholic 4 Ryle 2 (9th Region Quarterfinals)

Krumps breaks some tendencies and the Colonels score 3 in the 6th to get the comeback win.

Maile went 5 2/3. Stallman went 1 and 1/3 to close it out.

Ryle does the wheel bunt coverage 4 times in a row. Left the whole infield open for any ground ball to get through....and 2 hard hit ground balls did. Bad defense strategy. Good game to that point. #getkrumpsto1000

Some of the Ryle fans told me they practiced the wheel coverage for the first time at practice yesterday. Interesting timing.

The strategy, at least initially, was understandable. Krumps is not one to break tendency. Coach Roesel sold out and Krumps countered nicely. But, it doesn’t work unless the kids swinging the bat make it work. Good job by the Colonels - finding a way.

All 3 pitchers threw well today.

The demise for Ryle started with a walk in the bottom of the 6th. Not a good way to start a late inning in a one-run game. McGinness then hit a long double down the LF line and all 6'5 of Jack Coldiron scored from first. Someone earlier referenced Krumps not being Krumps in that he didn't sac bunt the runner. Worked out well. Worked out so well he did it again with the next batter who hit what would have been a groundball to SS but SS was heading to third on the wheel play. That was really the ball game.

Stallman didn't throw many pitches. I would assume he's eligible to pitch Tuesday.
