    Nicknames and PC

Too much time on my hands obviously, but I have a question. Many colleges had to change their nicknames if they were offensive. Specifically I remember some of the names that dealt with "native americans" that had to be changed by the schools.

My question, Have there been any high schools in the state that have either changed their mascot due to controversy, or are considering a change, or are not changing even though they get complaints?

Montgomery County used to be the Indians...are they still?
Does Russell take any complaints from religious folks about being the "Red Devils"?
    etc.

NKY still has the Holy Cross Indians, the Boone County Rebels, and the Dayton Greendevils. Villa Madonna changed from the Vipers to the Blue Lightning awhile back.

All my years in the Russell system I have only "heard" one complaint and that was from a young student. Now that does not mean that there are no complaints. Just speaking for what I have heard.

Don't forget the St Henry Crusaders . The Islamic community has to be upset about that one.

I believe Allen Central has had some trouble in the past due to their Rebel mascot.

Yes there was a big disagreement ove at ACHS over there name "the Rebels", but I can't understand why , those names were not chosen to be offessive to any one or to any group of people.

The "problem" concerning Allen Central had nothing to do with constituents of Allen Central. It was all caused by the David School and its coach threatening to cause trouble. It was the typical liberal attempt to force its pollitical correctness on others. Fortunately, it didn't work and was one small win for our freedoms.

My first team in grade school was the "Indians".

I don't know how many people this upset, (including some of my ancestors,) but I was proud to be an Indian.

I could be completely wrong, but I thought the problem at the Allen Central game was due to a rebel flag, not the mascot. Anyone remember?

Shawnee Indians to Shawnee Golden Eagles (Even though Shawnee is a tribe)

Iroquois is still Raiders but instead of an Indian raider their mascot is now a wolf. I never quite figured that out.

As someone else said Seneca went from Redskins to Redhawks but they still have a large painting of their Redskin mascot (a caracature similar to the Cleveland Indians mascot) in their gym that was paid for by a senior class.

I've never understood why a "Raider" had to be considered an Indian? Same with Warriors? I would tell these schools not to use any native images and all is fine.

As for the name Indians, I don't see a problem. I can't imagine its too offensive to many Kentuckians. But if one person cries, everyone has to change.

As for Redskins, I can understand changing that, but its the only one I really would support.

In December 2006, the David School, a private school in the same sports league as Allen Central, decided not to play a basketball game at the school because the David School considered the Confederate symbols a form of taunting, which is forbidden by the athletic league.

The Justice Resource Center in Louisville, Kentucky, a civil rights group, criticized the school's prominent displays of the Confederate flag at the school and at public events, and the head of the organization, the Rev. Louis Coleman, suggested that black members of nearby school sports teams should have the option of not participating in events where Confederate symbols are displayed. Coleman told the Associated Press that the flag creates "a very tense and negative atmosphere" for black student athletes.

Allen Central Principal Lorena Hall and many students at the school have defended the Confederate emblems, calling them symbols of strength, independence and pride. The school's use of the emblems "has nothing to do with racism," Hall told an Associated Press reporter. "It's a part of us."

Allen Central adopted the school flag and mascot in 1972, when four other schools were consolidated to form the high school. Students formed a committee and chose the mascot. The four previous schools and their mascots were the Maytown Wasps, the Garrett Black Devils, the Wayland Wasps and the Martin Purple Flash.

These things can really get out of hand. Some people are not happy unless they are stirring up something. I believe they spend their days looking for something to rile others up with.:fight:
