He's being pegged as an actor, but that seems to be a minor role in his life. From Wikipedia:

Thompson is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and a Visiting Fellow with the American Enterprise Institute, specializing in national security and intelligence.[

While in private practice, he also accepted appointments as Special Counsel to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee (1980–1981), Special Counsel to the Senate Intelligence Committee (1982), and Member of the Appellate Court Nominating Commission for the State of Tennessee (1985–1987.)

Thompson was appointed minority counsel for the hearings surrounding the Watergate scandal.

In 1977, Thompson represented Marie Ragghianti, who was a former Tennessee Parole Board chair. Ragghianti had refused to release felons who had bribed aides to Democratic Governor Ray Blanton in order to obtain clemency.

Thompson has been a lobbyist intermittently since 1975, and has earned about $1 million from his lobbying efforts during that time. Except for the year 1981, his lobbying never amounted to more than a third of his income.

While I have not yet read it, I heard there is a very interesting article on him in Newsweek.

Sounds like a great story as far as coming from a rough background, marrying at 17, going to night school, getting a scholarship to Vandy Law, being groomed by Howard Baker, etc.

He's far from "just" an actor.

Both he an John Edwards announced their Presidency runs on late night comedy talk shows (Edwards did it on the Daily Show, pre-Kerry).

Coincidence or Political "Rock the Vote"-esque move to involve the younger crowds?

With a history as distinguished as his, it really makes you wonder what he would do with his five or so minutes a week of spare time.
