Ex-Anchor Dan Rather Sues CBS For $70 Million In NY Court

    Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Former "CBS Evening News" anchor Dan Rather sued CBS Corp. (CBS CBSA), as well top executives at CBS and its one-time parent Viacom Inc. (VIA VIAB), for $70 million over a disputed story about President Bush that led to the newsman's departure from the network.

The lawsuit, filed in New York State Supreme Court on Wednesday, claims intentional mishandling of the aftermath of a September 2004 story broadcast on "60 Minutes II" about President George W. Bush's service in the Texas Air National Guard during the Vietnam War cost Rather significant financial loss and seriously damaged his reputation.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think he is saying that CBS did not do enough to protect him from his own stupidity.

    Am I wrong?

On a very related note... Probably for another thread, but I was so upset about Rather-gate and the whole attack on Bush right before the election that I have intentionally tried to steer away from watching CBS news whenever possible. I'm sure that many other people have done the same. CBS did the right thing by sacking Rather. The thing that really upsets me about the whole thing is that they hired Couric to take his spot. Nothing against Couric, and everything against CBS news. Couric has been in third place since she took over. Everytime you see or hear about the ratings for CBS they try to imply that it is a sex-ist issue or something that we no longer watch CBS news. Personally, I don't care who reads the news, man or woman, but I don't like watching CBS!!!

PRECISELY! Rather was the lead REPORTER on the story and made on-air claims that he himself had uncovered portions of the story. Not to mention rule #1 in journalism school is "don't report anything that hasn't been confirmed, reconfrimed and then confirmed again." Rather had led a slanted newscast for years before this mess and he finally got caught. Suck it up, take your medicine and go away.

    And take Katie with you!
