blueandblack14 Posted September 20, 2014 Posted September 20, 2014 Ballard has a solid team this year. Manual is not the same without Nero but Ballard will be a tough out for anyone this year.
Knights Posted September 20, 2014 Posted September 20, 2014 This surprises me. From what I have seen of Manual on tape and from seeing Ballard in our scrimmage I thought this would be Manual in a big way.
CoachJ Posted September 20, 2014 Posted September 20, 2014 Yeah, sorry about that. I'm afraid events conspired around our scrimmage to give you guys a false sense of where you were. Very first contest going from a pass-first concept (spread for last 5 yrs) to 'run-first' concept (Wing-T). ...not only were we still trying to figure out how to do the 'base' plays, your guy was smart enough to play basically a goalline defense all over the field--and while we had a little of our play action stuff in, it was nowhere near ready. Also, I was adamant we would only run about 40% of the play package no matter what to keep some things from StX. Second, a brand new DCoordinator installing much more 'man' & pressure concepts. Understandably, our DBs had some pretty massive breakdowns in coverage--and as I'm sure you saw, the 'no tackle on our QB--so down when you tag him' I agreed to didnt exactly get enforced on several big pass plays (ref said once he wasn't aware that was in force). All in all though, that scrimmage result helped us be a little under the radar (which I like). Our kids have improved SO much in just 4 weeks on both sides of the ball--especially on defense (held a very good Manual team to under 140yds total offense). Still figuring out some nuances of the offense and we were without our top 2 OL and our starting QB who had been playing great (the best OL guy we have actually played every down at QB last night--GREAT kid). Manual defense is for real. Very impressive how they get off blocks and how they flew to the ball. Looked like a small college team in person. They'll be a tough out in the super district this year. Hopefully we can keep improving when we can get our top OL kids back and our starting QB this week. But doesn't get any easier with Male up next.

villecoach Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 Manual's Defense is extremely talented, good size, good speed, fly to the ball, and well coached. After 4 weeks it appears they are the number 1 ranked scoring defense and all classes. St X seems to have a very good defense as well, however both teams struggle offensively.
