Actually, Germany, Switzerland and Austria all have very low death rates compared to what is happening in other countries. Early high volume testing? South Korea's death rate is low too and early high volume testing has been the big factor there.
Just spitballing, but in comparison I would think those countries typically have better overall health. Less obesity, heart disease, diabetes etc.

An overview video that give a great overview of the situation by a NY professor. Overview of viruses, corona viruses, transmission and the math of the flatten the curve approach. Good biology to start. Good numbers to finish up. A bit long at over 39 minutes. Good if you have time. Maybe skip through to catch parts of interest if 40 minutes is too long.

    Some notables:
1:20 - Humans carry an average of 5 viruses in them at any time.
9:40 - The 3 novel corona viruses and their differences
    19:42 - Range of symptoms
    21:00 - Containment/mitigation
26:20 - This is where the flatten the curve math starts

That's with a population that's only 20% of what we have here in the US.

This could be a big part of it. We visited Cologne a couple of times. They walk or bike everywhere. You see very few overweight people there.
