That's a toughie. You have to remember the era and how strong East coast football was.

Watching the sports reporters today, and they said Appy State would be a top 40 team in D1 this year. Not an excuse by any means, but they aren't your normal 1AA team.

Thus the reason for my earlier comments, they can play the game - just in no way should have came close to beating a "ranked" D1 football team let alone a top 5-10 ranked team. JMO but Michigan looked lost as far as being prepared and were very lethargic in their play. I still believe that Michigan will right the ship so to speak and have a very good season.

Appy St. went in the game just as they should have......absolutely nothing to lose and just let it all go and play as hard as you can.

C6HO! The formula can still be found around the Danville campus. I'd say the Appalachian State/Michigan game is top 5, but if you take into account everything from each era, Centre's win has to be at the top.

What many don't know is that later that year, Centre also beat Texas Christian and Arizona. The next year they fell to Texas A&M in a tight bowl game.

If I was Mich. I would want a rematch. If they lost again Carr would have to be gone; if he is not after this season.

I think Appy State has contracts with Florida and a few others for season openers over the next few seasons. They are an excellent team and I think they proved that not only are they a solid team, but UM was overrated. If they really were the 5th best 1A team in the country, they should never have lost this one at home IMHO. They will drop out of the top 10 due to this which should move UL into the top 10 on EVERY poll, where they deserved to be. And this, from a diehard UK fan.

Especially since programs like North Carolina State and Kansas have been able to beat Appy State still. I think I read today that those team have beaten Appy State the last couple years by a combined score of 93 to 10...
