CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- There's always been a strong bond between Roy Williams and Dean Smith.

North Carolina's current coach works in the massive arena that bears the name of his longtime mentor and one-time boss. The two have combined for three of the basketball program's four NCAA titles and forged the Kansas-to-North Carolina pipeline.

Along the way, two of the biggest names in the Tar Heels' rich history have created plenty of memories along Tobacco Road, with nearly every shelf of Williams' office bearing a photograph or souvenir from Smith's coaching tenure.

The men will add another link next weekend when Williams joins his hero in the Basketball Hall of Fame. Fittingly, his presenter will be his idol.

"It's hard for me to even think about joining Coach Smith in any group," Williams said. "That's such a weird feeling -- I'm having a weird time even thinking about that kind of thing, because I don't think you should put Roy Williams and Dean Smith in the same sentence."

Williams and nine-time NBA championship coach Phil Jackson headline a class of incoming Hall of Famers that also includes the 1966 NCAA champion Texas Western team; four-time WNBA championship coach Van Chancellor, the longtime women's coach at Mississippi recently hired by LSU; former NBA referee Mendy Rudolph; and international coaches Pedro Ferrandiz of Spain and Mirko Novosel of Yugoslavia.
