    Runnin' Rebels of UNLV

I know most are probably tuned into the Big East title game so you may want to set your DVR to record this HBO presentation that runs from 930 to 1030 tonight. One of the greatest teams of all time and HBO usually does a fine job of producing these types of stories.

Wished I would have known; if it was the team with Larry Johnson, Stacy Augmon, and the rest of them, hard to argue that this wasn't one of the greatest all time.

I'm sure it'll be on again and again but I'll be watching shortly, that team was the perfect fit for Sin City.

I just saw the documentary and made a post on facebook about them being the best team I ever saw and now have been having this argument the past 24 hours.....who was better.....the Runnin Rebels from 1990-91 or the 1995-96 UK Wildcats? The 96 UK was an awesome squad but when I break down the matchups the only matchup I have UK with an advantage is bringing Mercer off of the bench. I have Delk and Hunt as equals and UNLV winning the other matchups. Anyone up for this discussion?

Maybe I'm biased, but the '96 UK team is the best I've seen. I agree that UNLV has the matchup advantages, but the thing that made UK so great was that they could go 10-11 deep with quality all the way down.

That would be a great matchup. Could UK bother the Rebels and/or wear them down with their depth and pressure? Or would they get run out of the gym where it wouldn't matter? That's the intriguing thing. UNLV excelled in the up tempo game and Kentucky wanted to force the tempo with their pressure and wear teams down. I could see either happening to be honest in a hypothetical matchup. I could see the Rebels attack the pressure and build a lead, or Kentucky wear them down with relentless pressure and depth.

Off the top of my head, here's the best teams I've watched.

    1. Kentucky '96
    2. UNLV '91
    3. Duke '92-93
    4. Florida '06-07 (I think I got the years right)

Definitely great points. The depth on the Cats is definitely one of their strengths. I also remember teams trying many different strategies against UNLV and they all failed. Teams would slow the pace down and still get beat by 20.

It is a very intriguing match up for sure. I wish there was a way to make it happen.

I remember videotaping the Arkansas game. One of the best games I have ever seen. I used to watch it everyday. I'd love to see that game again and the Duke game again.

Interesting enough, the Rick Majerus coach Ball State Cardinals nearly upset the Runnin' Rebs in the championship season. I think they lost 69-67 or something like that. It's amazing how even the all-time great championship teams often have a too-close for comfort game en route to their title. I don't think UNLV had a game under double digits other than that. Also, I remember UCLA in '95. They beat Missouri on Tyus Edney's full-court dash layup in the second round and then handled everybody else by 10 or more. Survive and advance.

I remember that game as well. I remember UNLV just being too good in the fast paced game. I don't recall the game being as close as the score indicates. I though Vegas had a comfortable lead for much of the game.

I remember it the same way as well. I remember that year both teams were blowing people out and something had to give in the matchup and UNLV straight bullied them the whole game.

One of the few times I was pulling - strongly - for Duke.
