Give It Up For UC

Page 3 of Even if you're not a UC fan you have to admit that the turnaround in 5 years to a 6 seed is quite impressive. For some reason and I can't put a finger ... 42 comments | 1775 Views | Go to page 1 →

Not exactly a recipe for the continued uptrend the program has experienced in that time. This year was at best a flat line from the 09-10 season, and from what I am told was down another few hundred grand...
How in the world does a school playing in the biggest and best conference in the country continue to have a basketball program losing money?

The program is making money. It's what they are given to spend on opponents, recruiting, staff etc. that is shrinking...

If they're making money, how is that possible? So they expect them to compete on the highest level, all the while giving them less and less to work with? If I'm Mick, I'd want out of that in a hurry.

Here is a number I guarantee no one would anticipate. In the 6 years since joining the Big East the hoops program has been more profitable than the football program by a little over a million dollars total. As the budget has gone up in football, it has been reduced in hoops even though one is making more profit than the other...

This boggles my mind....Why is Mick still there? It would seem the minute another BCS job came offering he'd bolt. He's being asked to compete at a high level, and is starting out at a decided disadvantage...

Which is exactly why he is now using his leverage to see if they are going to make the commitment needed. If not, don't be surprised if he walks from his dream job...

On the radio last night I heard UC's spending was 13 out of 16 teams? I didn't hear if that was for basketball or all sports? Plus you throw in their arena, poorly designed and already outdated, now look at the other arena's in the Big East such as at UL, it's a lot harder to recruit at UC! Then you have a coach who has 3 years left on his contract and they have not offered to extend it? That is also hard on recruiting, players want to know a school is behind their coach and signs that he may be there at the end of their career at a college.

Didn't Mick just say a few days ago he has no interest in any other jobs, including Arkansas?

He said he has not had any contact with other schools and wants to be a lifer at UC. That's doesn't mean he is going to stick around if Mike Thomas doesn't step up to the plate and support the program with what it takes to consistently compete at a high level...

What was the budget when Huggs was there and had UC as a top 10 team every year?

Not sure and it wouldn't really matter in the scope of this discussion. 4 million is plenty in CUSA. Not so much in the Big East. The first year in the Big East under AK it was 4.6 mil...

Plus the value of the money then isn't the same as it is now.
