Who should have won Best Actor (Last 20 shows)

The perfect performances thread got me thinking about Best Actor awards. So I figured I'd do the same thing that I did for Best Picture, only this time with Best Actor. The same rule applies that your pick has to be from the nominated performances. Here is a list of nominees.

    1990 (63rd)
Winner - Jeremy Irons - Reversal of Fortune
My Pick - Kevin Costner - Dances with Wolves

I have to admit that I haven't seen all of these. Even though I think Goodfellas should have won Best Picture I did enjoy DwW and Costner's performance.

    1991 (64th)
Winner - Anthony Hopkins - The Silence of The Lambs
My Pick - Anthony Hopkins - The Silence of The Lambs

    Easy pick.

    1992 (65th)
Winner - Al Pacino - Scent of a Woman
My Pick - Clint Eastwood - Unforgiven

I'll give Eastwood the complete sweep this year. Loved everything about Unforgiven, especially his performance.

    1993 (66th)
Winner - Tom Hanks - Philadelphia
My Pick - Liam Neeson - Schindler's List

Hanks was good in Philadelphia but Neeson's performance was iconic. This is an easy do-over for me.

    1994 (67th)
Winner - Tom Hanks - Forrest Gump
My Pick - Tom Hanks - Forrest Gump

Once again this is a very strong year. But the Best Actor performance isn't nearly as difficult.

    1995 (68th)
Winner - Nicholas Cage - Leaving Las Vegas
My Pick - Nicholas Cage - Leaving Las Vegas

Not a Cage fan at all, but no arguing this one.

    1996 (69th)
Winner - Geoffrey Rush - Shine
My Pick - Billy Bob Thornton - Slingblade

Both great performances. Very hard choice.

    1997 (70th)
Winner - Jack Nicholson - As Good as It Gets
My Pick - Jack Nicholson - As Good as It Gets

    1998 (71st)
Winner - Robert Benigni - Life is Beautiful
    My Pick - None

I have to admit that I've never seen Life is Beautiful. Therefore I'll opt out of this one. I definitely need to correct this.

    1999 (72nd)
Winner - Kevin Spacey - American Beauty
My Pick - Kevin Spacey - American Beauty

    Not close.

    2000 (73rd)
Winner - Russell Crowe - Gladiator
My Pick - Tom Hanks - Cast Away

Crowe was fine in Gladiator but what Hanks did in Cast Away was far more impressive.

    2001 (74th)
Winner - Denzel Washington - Training Day
My Pick - Denzel Washington - Training Day

Not close for me. You can see my thoughts on it here.

    2002 (75th)
Winner - Adrien Brody - The Pianist
My Pick - Adrien Brody - The Pianist

I thought this was a pretty strong year. I loved Nicholson in About Schmidt and once again liked Cage. But Brody earned it.

    2003 (76th)
Winner - Sean Penn - Mystic River
My Pick - Bill Murray - Lost In Translation

Rockmom is going to be mad, but I just can't deny Murray this one. This is one of my favorites of the decade.

    2004 (77th)
Winner - Jamie Foxx - Ray
My Pick - Don Cheadle - Hotel Rwanda

Both exceptional performances. But I think as time has passed Cheadle nudges Foxx in this one.

    2005 (78th)
Winner - Phillip Seymour Hoffman - Capote
My Pick - Phillip Seymour Hoffman - Capote

I seriously considered Terrence Howard in Hustle & Flow. I'm not a huge fan of Capote, but Hoffman was very good.

    2006 (79th)
Winner - Forest Whitaker - Last King of Scotland
My Pick - Forest Whitaker - Last King of Scotland

    Easy pick.

    2007 (80th)
Winner - Daniel Day-Lewis - There Will Be Blood
My Pick - Daniel Day-Lewis - There Will Be Blood

    2008 (81st)
Winner - Sean Penn - Milk
My Pick - Sean Penn - Milk

I thought Rourke was great in The Wrestler, but it's a testament to Penn that this one isn't that close.

    2009 (82nd)
Winner - Jeff Bridges - Crazy Heart
My Pick - Jeff Bridges - Crazy Heart

Until I saw Crazy Heart I thought Clooney had this one wrapped up for Up in the Air.

So there you go, let's hear what you think about my choices and I'd love to see yours.

1992-Denzel Washington for "Malcolm X". One of the greatest injustices ever. I love Al Pacino, but his award was a Lifetime Achievement.
