Son Volt (Jay Farrar) wrote a song about that on their last album. Not such a great song, but it did make me look up the SS Sultana. I'd never heard of it.

Pretty wild that the Sultana is virtually unknown in this day and age, yet pretty much every melodramatic girl who went to high school in the late 90's could tell you ALL about a pair of fictional lovebirds on the non-fiction Titanic.

It's amazing to me. A death toll worse than that of the Titanic and you are the only other person to comment on it today. Sad really that the tragic death of so many Americans ends up lost to history for the most part.

I cannot tell you where I was or what I was doing when Diana or Mother Teresa died. Am I a bad person?

As somewhat of a Civil War buff, I am well aware of the Sultana disaster. It was a tragedy in a age of tragedies. Most brought on by profiteers and bad decisions.

I don't remember reading about the USS Sultana in high school or even when taking HIS-109 at UK, one of my favorite classes. Keep in mind that people writing the history books place more importance on Lincoln's assassination and Booth's death. Not the people reading them.

Most people are going to consider tragedies that happened in their lifetime, before ones that occurred before their time. I remember where I was when the Challenger went down. I remember 9/11/2001 like it was yesterday. I even remember where I was when Katrina hit New Orleans. However, in an time where everything has been reduced to a top 10 list, I don't rate tragedies ahead of one another.

Never heard of it until now. Then again, I'm not a Civil War buff. My family came over on the boat long after that unpleasant mess was overwith.

Article was interesting, but the comparison of Mother Theresa and Princess Di doesn't quite work. Granted, Di's celebrity far outshined her relative importance in the grand scheme of things. But the reason why her death is remembered the way it is is because she died young and pretty, before her time. Mother Theresa, on the other hand, was old and had accomplished much, and her death didn't come as a surprise. And besides, with the benefit of 150 years of hindsight, Mother Theresa will be far more remembered than the princess.

If this were present day, there would be a public outcry about naming it after and Arabic word.

St. Peter meets Mother Theresa at the Gates of heaven and says, "You were a good woman. I'm giving you a nice halo."
Mother Theresa is walking around Heaven when she sees Princess Di, and the Princess has a much bigger halo.
Mother Theresa goes back to St. Peter and says, "St. Peter, I spent most of my adult life helping the poor and sickly. Princess Diana did no where near the amount of charitable work I did. Why does she have a bigger halo?"

"That's not a halo," St. Peter replied, "Its a steering wheel!"

Sorry folks, that was just plain wrong.

This is the first I can ever remember reading about this and I do read quite a bit on the Civil War. Certainly Lincoln's assassination overshadowed this during its time and after its time.

I hadn't heard of this prior to taking American History II at U of L last year.
