Suicide rate jumps for U.S. girls

CDC: Suicide rate jumps for American kids
Biggest annual increase in 15 years; highest among girls ages 10-14

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20620477/

ATLANTA - The suicide rate among preteen and teenage girls rose to its highest level in a decade, and hanging surpassed guns as the preferred method, federal health officials reported Thursday.

The report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests a surprising reversal in recent trends.

The biggest jump — about 76 percent — was in the suicide rate for girls ages 10-14 from 2003 to 2004. There were 94 suicides in that age group in 2004, compared to 56 in 2003. That’s a rate of fewer than one per 100,000 population.

Sad, one thing that ALL parents need to tell their children is that they love them unconditionally, no matter what! And tell their children that they can come to them for ANYTHING and they will lsiten to their child! I think one reason for suicide amongst teens and preteens (wow that is scary to think of) is they are afraid to tell their parents of what is going on, or afaid their parents will get angry and or hate them.

I read that article and was hoping for an answer to the question "why?", but it wasn't there. I'm told that peer pressure for teenage girls is absolutely brutal, but suicide is an incredibly harsh solution.

I'm not sure my advise would be heeded or even valid to anyone but the one truth I've discovered in my many years is that time is the answer. No matter how hopeless it seems, no matter how much it hurts, no matter how serious the situation, there will come a day when the solution seems simpler, the pain abates, the embarassment turns to laughter, or acceptance sets in and you move on. But, you've got to stay around until then.

This is a terribly simple and inadequate answer to the problems that teenage girls (or anyone, for that matter) experience; but a wise person told me to always remember:

    This too shall pass.

Also, Some parents put so much pressure on teens these days that the load is just unbearable in the teens eyes.

I had a friend kill herself at age 17.

Life is tough sometimes but I can't imagine ever getting up the nerve to kill myself over anything. I almost find it to be a selfish act because of all the pain it puts so many of the ones that love you in.

I have a 13 yr old daughter and I truly realize that life for girls that age revolves around their friends. If a young girl is lonely, doesnt have parental support and gets picked on, I can see where this would be a problem.
