Fox Pulls The Plug On 'American Idol'

The January 2016 season will be its last. Ding-dong the witch is dead. Good riddance. Hopefully someone will start a show that actually encourages people to WRITE music.

'American Idol' to be eliminated after 2016 season

If you ask me, it's shows like this one that are speedily killing music....just like Pinterest and DIY shows are stifling artistic creativity, and HGTV is destroying architecture and design.

I'll admit it...I watched Idol. Watched the first 4 or 5 seasons pretty religiously. But the show grew pretty boring, and I think the talent dropped pretty dramatically. And when the trend of the most talented singers not winning or even getting voted out early started, I became less and less invested in the show. Really, no one from the show has had any real success post Idol aside from Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and Jennifer Hudson (who didn't win). Based on that fact alone, the show should have been cancelled years ago.

You named the 3 best singers that Idol has produced. The rest are average at best. I watched it for a while but stopped because I couldn't stand Harry Connick Jr.and Keith Urban as judges.

Yep @lottoman the judges stink now...for better or worse Simon, Randy and that drunk chick made the show.

There have actually been some very talented singers on the show and a lot of the best didn't win. Haven't watched more that an episode or two in several years. The auditions are still good viewing, just to see the people that suck that actually think they can sing.

Only about 7-8 years too late but that's cool. Better late than never. I honestly didn't even know it was still on until this news came out.

I only watched a couple of seasons, and only the parts where the really terrible singers were on.

That sounds about right. The formula just grew stale. The auditions were cool for the first few years, but quickly became the same old thing year after year. The theme weeks became especially bad over time, and it seemed like year after year you could count on hearing some of the same songs. And as as mentioned, Simon Cowell was the real driver of the show. Once he and the conflict he brought left, the show was left with only the increasingly average talent of the contestants to carry it. Every reality show needs a villain to be successful.

Never watched a full episode, a few bits and pieces here and there.

Is Simon Cowell now totally irrelevant in the US?

My wife and I still watch and enjoy the show. However, it hasn't shown to be the path to stardom for every winner.

Daughtry didn't do bad after. Musically he's had more success then Hudson.
