14th Region Week 7 Review: #1 Reclaimed, 14th Region All "A" Recap

Recommended Posts

We're midway through the 2018/19 basketball season. The 14th Region has a new but not so new, in fact a previous #1 to take back the #1 ranking this week and it's time for each region's all a tournament. Let's take a look back at all the action from week 7.

1) Knott County Central (11-6): The Patriots reclaimed the #1 ranking this week as they won the 14th region all a tournament defeating Cordia 69-65, Owsley County 79-43, Breathitt County 66-48 and Hazard 46-34. The Patriots were ranked the preseason #1 team in the 14th region and held onto it for several weeks before being knocked off by the Breathitt County Bobcats. Both teams traded wins on each other's home court.

The Patriots will be on the road all this week. Traveling to Belfry on Friday and to George Rogers Clark on Saturday to play Pike County Central in the Tim Short Automotive Classic at 1 PM.

2) Breathitt County (8-6): The Bobcats weren't able to hold on to the #1 spot as they would fall to the Knott County Central Patriots 66-48 in the semi-finals of the 14th region all a tournament. Breathitt County had steam rolled past both Lee County 105-46 and Wolfe County 102-88 before the clash with Knott County Central.

Breathitt County has three big games coming up this week. Hosting Leslie County on Tuesday, traveling up the hill behind Breathitt County High School to Jackson City to take on the Tigers on Thursday and returning home for the JP Deaton Classic on Saturday where they will host the Engineers of Estill County.

3) Perry County Central (6-10): The Commodores split their two games last week, cruising past the Floyd Central Jaguars 63-31 but falling to North Laurel 75-64 on the road. Good news for the Commodores fans and family as they picked up a big transfer from Scott County in Jaylin Williams.

The Commodores will host Clay County on Tuesday and Cordia on Friday.

4) Hazard (14-4): Hazard continues to throttle their opponents. 12 of their 14 wins have came by double digits, including their blow out wins in the 14th region all a tournament this past week. Hazard rolled through June Buchanan 70-50, Buckhorn 64-35 and Leslie County 65-38. Hazard met Knott County Central (for the second time this season) in the championship game of the 14th region all a tournament which ended in the same result, a win for Knott County Central. The loss to Knott County Central snapped a 7 game win streak by the Bulldogs.

Hazard will host North Laurel on Tuesday, Oneida Baptist Institute on Friday and travel to Fleming County to participate in the Coach Lake Kelly Classic against Lewis County.

5) Letcher County Central (9-6): After a hot start to the season, the Cougars have gone cold. Losing 4 of their last 6 games. One thing that counts though, is one of their losses, 63-58 loss was to Knott County Central, the preseason favorite to win the region, giving everyone hope that Knott County Central can be knocked off their throne come tournament time.

Letcher County Central has a lot of traveling this week as they travel to Buckhorn on Tuesday night and June Buchanan on Thursday.

6) Buckhorn (11-6): The Wildcats dropped their only game last week and it was a difficult one as they would fall to district foe, Hazard 64-35 in the 14th region all a tournament.

Buckhorn will have a tough test this week as they host Letcher County Central on Tuesday, travel to Leslie County on Friday and Fleming County on Saturday to participate in the Coach Lake Kelly Classic against Lawrence County.

7) Cordia (2-12): The Lions continue to struggle. The good news is though, in their loss to Knott County Central, they gave the Patriots all they wanted and then some, telling them that they aren't unbeatable.

Cordia will travel to Corbin on Wednesday for the Hometown Bank Classic and travel to Perry County Central on Friday.

8) Wolfe County (4-10): Wolfe County continues to struggle. Coming into the season they were expected to be down but not this down with the talent they had returning. The Wolves dropped their second game to Breathitt County this season this past week in a 102-88 high scoring affair.

Wolfe County will host Lee County on Tuesday and Powell County on Friday.

9) Leslie County (2-9): The Eagles picked up their second win on the season with a 68-48 win over Jackson City in the 14th region all a tournament but that win would be short lived as they would drop their next game in the all a tournament to district foe, Hazard 65-38. I can't remember the last time Leslie County struggled this bad.

Leslie County's schedule doesn't get any easier this week, not with them having to travel to Breathitt County on Tuesday and host Buckhorn on Friday.

10) Powell County (4-12): The Pirates got revenge this past week but also got revenge handed to them. Powell County picked up a 63-53 road win at Menifee County, to revenge an earlier defeat. Powell County would fall to Estill County 49-44. Story of the week though should be the retirement of legendary head coach, David Fraley. Coach Fraley stepped down this past week due to health issues.

Powell County will be on the road most of the week, traveling to Owsley County on Tuesday, Wolfe County on Friday and returning home on Saturday for an afternoon contest with the Jackson City Tigers.

11) Estill County (4-11): For the first time this season, the Engineers have put up back to back wins. Defeating two district opponents, Owsley County 61-47 and Powell County 49-44.

12) Owsley County (7-8): The Owls have dropped 4 of their last 5 games. The last (current) two losses, however, have been by double digits with one of them being a blowout to Knott County Central. Their other loss coming to Estill County.

13) Jackson City (5-9): After starting the season off horribly, the Tigers have now won 3 of their last 5 games.

14) June Buchanan (3-11): The Crusaders have now dropped 6 straight. That's not good at all.

15) Lee County (5-16): The Bobcats picked up a 71-64 road win at Jenkins this past week, snapping a 5 game losing streak.

16) Riverside Christian (0-0): First time in school history the Rams sit at .500 on the season but wait, their's no games.
