Impact of NKU's 2017 NCAA Tournament Apperance

Based on the attendance numbers, this didn't age very well:

So far this year, NKU attendance is dreadful. Biggest crowd was just over 4K to see the Norse play Morehead State on a Saturday in the 9,400-seat BB&T Arena. UC just attracted almost 6K on a Tuesday for a game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. I don't see things improving any for NKU when the conference portion of the season begins.

NKU men averaged 2,824 per home game last season. This season will probably end up being just a shade over 3K, for about a 200-per-game boost for making the NCAA tourney.

Interesting stuff. I wonder if they did something similar with Florida Gulf Coast or they do one with Loyal next year. Granted those teams won a few games in the tournament but it would be neat to see the comparison.

Not only did making the tournament/playing Kentucky help them enormously, but the story behind the Norse got people across the nation hooked. A team that just went D1 and makes the tournament in its first year? That's a story I'd get behind.

UMBC saw a similar increase in Twitter followers overnight after they beat Virginia. Other years, you hear about increases in enrollment (particularly in-state) when teams make a first appearance, Cinderella run, or win a title. Sports teams frequently give a boost to a university--don't tell the faculty that though, they don't think sports help them.

Applications to the university may increase, after success of a sports team, but enrollment rarely does. A school can only handle so many students. Academic entrance standards and retention rates count, too. NKU won't take just anybody. They are not UCF.

According to NKU's own report, enrollment has been decreasing at a steady rate since 2010. This current academic year was no different.

The cost of college at all levels is causing less students to attend the traditional 4 year university. They have made dorms so nice it is better than most apartments and they charge for it too!

Norse avg attendance was up about 40% to 4135.
