Scott County Cardinals

Coach: Billy Hicks

Record: 34-1

State Championships: 2

District: 42

Region: 11

The Scott County Cardinals return to Rupp Arena to represent the 11th Region for the second year in a row. Last year they fell in the quarterfinals to eventual state champion Bowling Green in a close game that came down to the final few minutes. Make no mistake the Cardinals are back for one reason and one reason only, to claim a State Championship!! The Cardinals enter the tournament with an impressive 34-1 record and no losses against in state competition. They look to bring home the 3rd state title in school history.

Players to Know

Michael Moreno - Michael Moreno comes in to the sweet sixteen as the Cardinals leading scorer and rebounder on the season. He averages 20.5 points per game and 11.0 rebounds a game. He is one of the top players in the state in the class of 2018 and a serious contender for Mr. Basketball next season.

Cooper Robb - Cooper Robb is the lone senior starter in the Cardinals lineup. He has signed with UNC-Charlotte and is the point guard for Coach Hicks' squad. Many people will tell you he is the straw the stirs the drink for the Cardinals and I will not argue that. He shoots it better then you think, he handles it better then you think, and he can flat out guard. If the Cardinals do cut down the nets this week Cooper Robb will be one of if not the main reason for it.

Diablo Stewart - Diablo Stewart was a new addition to the Cardinals this season but has fit right in with Coach Hicks' squad. He enters the state tournament averaging 12.1 points per game. Along with Cooper Robb and Bryce Long he anchors a solid backcourt that is tough to guard. He can also handle the ball if opponents are trying to get it out of Robb's hand and is shooting 43.9% from the 3 point line on the season.

The Cardinals enter the tournament as one of the heavy favorites along with Trinity and Covington Catholic. Unfortunately, for most of us as spectators Scott County and Trinity will meet in the first round. While it may be disappointing to some it is the beauty of this tournament. I will say if and its a huge if but if Scott County does get by Trinity expect them to cut down the nets Sunday afternoon.
