BluegrassPreps.com 11th Region Week 9 Recap and Rankings

Recommended Posts

Another big week has come and gone in the always tough 11th Region. While I think we have a unanimous #1 in the region, 2-6 could be anyone at this point. A ton of good games on the slate this week. Lets get right to it!!

Team Of The Week

Lexington Christian Academy - The Eagles are an easy pick for this weeks team of the week after winning the All A State Classic. Congrats to Coach Valentine and the rest of the Eagles for bringing home their first All A State Title. Also, congrats to Kyle Rode for being named the MVP of the tournament and Carter Hendricksen, Will Hacker, and Austin Hall for being named to the All Tournament Team for the Eagles.

Player of the Week

Michael Moreno - Scott County - Michael Moreno brings home his second player of the week award. After leading Scott County to 3 wins this week and averaging 20 points and 17 rebounds on the week, Michael was an easy pick for this weeks player of the week. Congrats to Michael!!

Team Rankings

1. Scott County (21-1) - The Cardinals cemented themselves at the #1 spot this past week by going to Bryan Station and coming away with a big win in a game where they trailed by double figures at the half. The Cardinals also picked up wins over Frederick Douglass and Taylor County this week. Up next is Round 2 of Scott County/Bryan Station this time in Georgetown then the Cardinals host district rival Henry Clay and face a good John Hardin team at Lafayette as part of the Jock Sutherland Classic.

2. Bryan Station (17-3) - The Defenders had a tough week. First, they dropped the much anticipated game against Scott County, then Eric Boone suffered a small injury in a win over Sayre which caused him to miss the next game against Dunbar which resulted in a loss for the Defenders. I'm not ready to drop them from the 2 spot. They showed they can play with Scott County and after the 1st half of that game many folks would've thought they were going to be our new number 1. Quick turnaround for the Defenders as they host Frederick Douglass then travel to Scott County early this week before heading to a tough Frankfort team at the end of the week.

3. Lafayette (15-5) - The Generals continue their winning ways this week picking up 2 quality victories on the road over Paul Laurence Dunbar and Henry Clay. Lafayette is one of the hottest teams in the state right now. This is a HUGE week for them as far as the 43rd District is concerned. Early in the week the Generals host Lexington Catholic before they head to Lafayette in two huge matchups. The Generals could find themselves locked in at the 1 seed in the 43rd District by the end of the week. This week Lafayette hosts a great event, the Jock Sutherland Classic, the Generals play host to Anderson County in that one.

4. Madison Central (17-5) - The Indians have an argument to be ranked higher then this and like I said at the beginning you can put teams 2-6 in a hat and draw them out and anyone could fill those spots. Madison Central went 3-0 this week with wins over Montgomery County, West Jessamine, and of course the big win over Trinity. The win over Trinity is about as big as it gets. This is another big week for the Indians as they head to Henry Clay, Harrison County, and then end the week with another visit from a top Louisville school in Ballard. I really like Madison Central and I believe they could be higher but with two losses against Bryan Station and a split with Lafayette, with Lafayette winning the latest one this is where they are.....for now.

5. Lexington Christian Academy (17-6) - As mentioned above the Eagles are our team of the week. Congrats to them on winning the All A State tournament this past week!! This week might be a bigger week for them then last. The Eagles host Covington Holy Cross this week and then welcome Lafayette to Reynolds Road for a HUGE 43rd District matchup. If the Eagles want any chance of getting the ever elusive 1 seed in that district they MUST win this week. Ive mentioned before Ive been waiting to see the real LCA and I believe they have arrived. The next two weeks will really set the tone for the postseason.

6. Lexington Catholic (15-6) - - The Knights drop a spot in the rankings really to no fault of their own. Lexington Catholic only had 1 game last week and they throttled Tates Creek. This week again only one game but its a big one. The rematch with Lafayette this time at Lafayette. For Catholic to have a chance at the 1 seed they also MUST win this week.

7. Frankfort (10-9) - The Panthers picked up a big win on the road over Woodford County to finish 6-0 in the 41st District for the first time in over 10 years. Juanya Frank hit a last second 3 in overtime to ensure the victory for Frankfort. This weekend they battled tough against GRC on the road and came up a bit short but played well. Up next the Panthers head to Shelby County and Bryan Station before going to Franklin County to play Eastern out of Louisville on Saturday.

8. Henry Clay (11-9) - The Blue Devils finished last week 1-2 but jump up in the rankings the picked up a win over district foe Frederick Douglass but dropped games to Lafayette and Trinity both in close close games. I know Coach Brown isn't one for moral victories but the Blue Devils showed signs of playing at a high level. More tests this week as Henry Clay hosts Madison Central and then heads to Scott County.

9. Paul Laurence Dunbar (6-12) - The Bulldogs had quite an impressive week. They dropped a close one early in the week to Lafayette but bounced back with a win over a short handed Bryan Station and then went to South Laurel and won. The Bulldogs tough schedule is starting to pay off as they are turning a corner in the right direction. Up next Dunbar heads to Paris, hosts Tates Creek, and then heads to Franklin County to face off with Western Hills.

10. Frederick Douglass (9-11) - The young Broncos are still looking to find their identity. Last week they dropped 3 games to pretty good teams Knox Central, Henry Clay, and Scott County. The road gets no easier this week as Douglass plays 5 games in 6 days!!! They head to Bryan Station, Bourbon County, and Tates Creek before Knox Central visits for a rematch of last weeks double overtime thriller and then finally they finish at Sayre, a loaded week for Frederick Douglass.

11. Franklin County (10-12) - Franklin County picked up 3 wins out of 4 games last week including a big district win. Early in the week they fell at Danville but bounced back with wins over Shelby County, Western Hills, and Cordia. This week the Flyers hit the road to Marion County before returning home to face off with Bourbon County and PRP.

12. Woodford County (13-8) - At one point this season the Yellow Jackets were 12 - 3, since then they have lost 6 of the last 8. Last week they dropped games with Collins and Frankfort High. Two very winnable games this week as they host Western Hills before heading to Casey County.

13. Model (15-5) - The Patriots dropped two games this week to Garrard County and Paris. After starting the season impressively Model has taken a bit of a step back. This week Model heads on the road for 3 games with Western Hills, Rockcastle County, and Whitefield Academy.

14. Madison Southern (9-11) - The Eagles split games last week. They picked up a win over Southwestern before falling to West Jessamine. This week the Eagles head to Somerset, host East Jessamine and then finish the week at Clinton County.

15. Sayre (9-13) - The Spartans split this past week losing to Bryan Station but went on the road to Breathitt County and picked up a nice road win. An interesting matchup this week as Sayre hosts Tates Creek before Nicholas County comes to town. Sayre ends the week at home against Frederick Douglass.

16. Western Hills (6-12) - The Wolverines are another team that split this past week. They picked up a win over Shelby County before falling to Franklin County....again.....in a close matchup. This week Western Hills hosts Model before heading to Bullitt Central and Woodford County, then return back to the hometown to take on Paul Laurence Dunbar at Franklin County.

17. Tates Creek (4-16) - The Commodores losing streak has reached 7. This past week they fell hard to GRC and Lexington Catholic. A couple interesting games this week with a chance for TC to move up the rankings. TC heads to Sayre, hosts Frederick Douglass, goes to Dunbar, and then heads to Knox Central.

18. Berea (10-9) - Berea went 1-2 last week with losses to Nicholas County and Jackson County but did pick up a win over Middlesboro. This week Berea hosts Nicholas County and Frankfort Christian Academy before heading to June Buchanan to end the week.

Great write-up as always. The 11th is just brutal this year. When you have the 6th ranked team in the region also in the BGP's top 20 that speaks volumes. A lot of regions say it's to bad only one team can go to state, but in the 11th, you will have 3-4 of the top teams in the state not make it. I will say, it makes for great basketball to watch. Should be a great last couple of weeks.

Thanks for putting together these rankings every week.:thumb:
