Last week's number one took care of number three, only to fall the next day. But last week's biggest news was Robertson County winning the regional All-A title as a heavy underdog; and becoming possibly the first sports team in recent memory (although they did have a really good debate team a while back) to advance to a "state tournament" of any kind.

1. Clark County (16-3, 7-1 region). The Cardinals are riding a six-game winning streak on the strength of home wins over Rowan County (78-42) and 12th-region powerhouse Pulaski County. Will Philpot led a quartet of Cardinals in double figures in the laugher over Rowan; with the most impressive team stat being 24 assists to 6 turnovers. All five Cardinal starters had a dozen or more in the win over Pulaski, outrebounding the Maroons 34-26 for the game. Tates Creek, Montgomery County and Frankfort are up this week.

2. Campbell County (17-3, 8-0 region). While Coach Russell's Camels remain the 10th's only undefeated squad, at some point ol' pap has to look at the "what have you done for me lately" question. Campbell started their week on Friday with a bang, defeating Scott 84-73 in a critical 37th-district seeding tilt. Camels fell behind 15-3 early, but eventually prevailed behind 27 from Tanner Clos and 20 apiece from Reid Jolly and Joel Day. The next day was a different story as the Camels fell to the Bearcats of Walton-Verona by 3. Once again, Closs (22), Jolly (19) and Day (11) reached double figures, shooting a combined 22 for 36 in the process. Campbell faces Covington Catholic and St. Henry this week.

I'm of the opinion that Clark and Campbell are about as evenly matched as a couple of regional opponents can be; and I wouldn't be surprised at a 5-5 split if they played 10 games. But at this point in time, by the slimmest of margins, Clark gets the nod.

3. Scott (13-5, 3-3 region). Our regional number 3 and number 4 are also an eyelash apart. Scott fell to Campbell on Friday, eventually running out of gas after building an early 12-point advantage. Chad Ohmer, Nelson Perrin and Trey Meister all reached double figures for the Eagles. Scott then hung on for a narrow 3-point win over Dixie Heights at NKU on Sunday. Calvary Christian (A), Bishop Brossart (H) and Harlan County (A) are on this week's schedule.

4. Pendleton County (13-5, 8-2 region). The Wildcats righted the ship after a modest 2-game skid with wins over Williamstown (93-44) and Frederick Douglass (63-56 at East Jessasmine) last week. Dontaie Allen blistered the nets with 25 in the first quarter and 43 in the game (sat out the final ten minutes). Allen was "held" to 21 (with 19 boards) in the Douglass game but was ably supported by Jacob Yelton with 20. Three games this week - St. Henry, NewCath and Harrison County.

5. Paris (11-6, 6-4 region). The Greyhounds dropped a pair of games last week, falling to Bryan Station by 21 on the road the day after what turned out (Campbell County - Scott notwithstanding) to be the region's game of the week the night before. Underdog Robertson County took the All-A final 59-57 in an absolute thriller in Carlisle on Thursday. Eric Johnson had 19 and Travis Strings 12 against Robertson, and Johnson had another 19 in the Station game. Paris plays Mason County and Model this week.

6. Robertson County (12-6, 9-1 region). Let's give Coach Kelsch and the Black Devils some more love this week. Freshman Sebastian Dixon led the scoring parade in the All-A with 18, Alex Schalch and Mason Burden had 12 and Brandon Dice had 11 including a couple of huge three-balls down the stretch. This without Bobo Swanson, who is still out with an injury. Ross Becker stepped up with 16 the next night as the Devils dispatched Augusta 73-59. Five (!) games are scheduled this week, but some may be subject to change as their Thursday game is against Clinton County in the first round of the All-A tournament in Richmond. Papa predicts a raucous Devil following at McBrayer!

7. Mason County (11-7, 3-3 region). You never know what you're gonna get with this year's Royals, who squeaked out a 3-point win over Ripley (OH) before laying an egg in Vanceburg, falling to Lewis County for the first time in over two decades. A tough pair of games are on the schedule this week - Paris and Boyd County; and Jaylen Lofton looks to return to the lineup this week.

8. Montgomery County (9-8, 3-4 region). Coach Daniel's Indians won both of their games last week to climb above the .500 mark for the first time this season. First was a tough 53-50 win over 40th rival Bourbon County on the road; falling behind by double-digits but eventually getting the win. Paul Wise hit the game-winner at the buzzer as MoCo defeated Knott County the next day in Winchester. The .500 record is in jeopardy this week, as Madison Central and Clark County grace the Indian's schedule.

9. Bishop Brossart (9-8, 3-2 region). The Mustangs fell in their only action of the week to Holmes, 63-51; falling behind early and never quite recovering. Zach Hamberg and Ethan Eilerman led the 'stangs with 16 and 12 respectively. Three straight games (W-Th-F) this week - Dayton, Harrison County and Scott.

10. Bourbon County (7-10, 3-6 region). The Colonels dropped both of their games last week - 53-50 to Montgomery County and 72-52 to Cordia. I don't have any individual stats from the games. Titus Ransom still leads the squad in PPG (18.5) and RPG (6.7). Nicholas and Bracken at home, then Southwestern away this week.

11. Harrison County (6-9, 2-3 region). The 'Breds come off a 2-week layoff this week with games against Bracken, Brossart and Pendleton.

12. Nicholas County (5-8, 3-6 region). The Jcets won their only gme last week, toppling Bracken County 59-46 at home. Williamstown, Bourbon, Augusta and Berea on this week's schedule.

13. St. Patrick (7-12, 2-5 region). The Saints fell hard to NewCath early in the week, but bounced back nicely at Fleming County on Friday. Isaiah Garrison and Ben Swolsky are both back in the lineup.

14. Augusta (7-10, 3-7 region). Losses to Robertson County and Fleming County ran the Panthers' losing streak to 3. They look to bounce back against St. Patrick, Nicholas County and Silver Grove this week.

15. Calvary Christian (10-8, 2-6 region). A pair of wins last week - Heritage Academy by 46 and Ludlow by 21. Williamstown and a TBA this week.

16. Bracken County (3-13, 0-8). The Polar Bears split a pair of games last week, falling to Nicholas and defeating the Dayton Greendevils. Harrison, Bourbon and Bath this week.

17. Silver Grove (2-12, 0-4 region). The Trains got off the schneid in a big way last week, beating Riverside Christian and CAPE (OH) in overtime. Villa, Robertson, Dayton and Augusta are on tap this week.

Player of the week

Let's think outside the box this time around. While Dontaie Allen certainly deserves a strong mention, I'm going with the entire Robertson County team for their thrilling win in the regional All-A championship game.

The top 4 teams have separated a bit. Much of the rest of the rankings are a combination of dartboard and magic 8-ball.

Not sure how Campbell loses the top spot in the region that they are undefeated in but that’s just my opinion and the team that is first was beaten by the Camels on their home court. I see you said the question of what have you done for me lately but not sure what that means when you are undefeated in your region and just beat a very tough Scott team.

I know they are close but not sure CC losing by 3 to #19 WV is enough to drop them from the top spot. This especially after putting it all on the floor the night before against Scott.

And Clark beat #9 Pulaski County.

One can make a good argument either way as to who gets the top spot. GRC is playing great ball, including the really nice win over Pulaski. Campbell is undefeated in the region and put away a solid Scott team.

Player of the week has become a joke at this point. Should just leave it out if you don't wanna give respect where it is due.

Pulaski was playing their second game in the same day. GRC is very good, I’m not gonna deny that. Think it would have been a different outcome with fresh legs. I also think the Campbell County/ Walton game would have been a little different if they didn’t play Scott Friday night and turn right around and played Saturday at 2:30 at a neutral site. Would love to see a GRC VS Campbell regional final. What would be one for the ages.

Doesn't matter to me if we are ranked 1st or 2nd. Just as long as we are the last team standing after the regional tourney.

If all of those raucous fans from Robertson County show up at the Civic Center (of the site of the old Frankfort Civic Center) they will be the only ones there.

The All "A" State Tournament has moved back to McBrayer Arena on the campus of Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond this year.
