St. Xavier football 100 year birthday

This Friday is 100 year birthday of St. X football. First game was against Jeffersonville, IN.

The 1917 season was followed by a two year hiatus by the Tigers. Elizabethtown High School is partially responsible for this abrupt break for St. Xavier football. :popcorn:

First St. Xavier team captain was a Hoosier. He had to travel by boat to get across the Ohio River in those days!!!!:thumb:

Someone should write a book. 100 years of Saint Xavier football.

Wow!! Congratulations on that history!

The Louisville Central Athletics twitter account had a cool series of tweets back in September just before their game against St. X regarding the fact that St. X and Central played in the first ever integrated game in the state in 1951...5 years before the state integrated their schools. The game was a 7-7 tie.

After the fact, there were a series of letters sent between the administrators of the two schools discussing how successful the game had been and how much they enjoyed the friendly competitiveness and the crowd turnout in addition to scheduling future games with one another. Pictures of the actual letters were all posted to the twitter account...but the best letter was this one, sent to both school principals by the Kentucky Director of the National Conference of Christians & Jews:

Gentlemen,

May I take this means of extending to you both as well as your faculties, coaches, players and student bodies, my hearty congratulations on the fine demonstration of sportsmanship and Americanism displayed in the recent football game between your schools.

Sometimes we who are professionals in the field if Inter-Group Relations become discouraged with our actual progress, and then a really fine public demonstration of brotherhood comes along, and we are able to feel that progress is being made.

The papers made a big thing over the fact that there were "no incidents". Of course there were no "incidents". You and your boys had no intent of allowing any "incidents" to mar a perfectly normal and natural encounter between youngsters. The Adult community has a lot more to learn. Thanks for giving them this lesson.
