Comparing Divisions To One Another

Heard a lot of banter about one division saying they have teams that can and WOULD win against almost anyone in the state. Here is how Cap-preps ranks the divisions power rankings. Looks like 6a is still the toughest sledding in the state. The other divisions while having some very good teams, face weaker competition in their divisions as a whole. Thoughts?

I do not think I understand. What does Top 50 mean?

Also do not understand how 6A can barely have a winning record at 65-59 when every school they play in state would be smaller schools? Should that be a lot better?

5A I can understand being 88-86 if they play a lot of 6A teams and not many 4A to 1A teams.

And wouldn't it be expected that 1A would have a losing record every year if every team they play is larger?

I think this is a little better telling..

Every class has bad teams and it stands to reason that the smaller the school the worst the bad teams are and that will subsequently drag down the rest of the class.

I would like to see the data of the Top 10 of each class and also see how the Top 5 fared against other Top 5 teams or how teams 5-10 fared against the same from other classes as well.

Just going strictly from a feel standpoint... here is how I would "power rank" the classes

2. 5A

3. 2A

4. 3A

6. 4A (Johnson Central is strong and Wayne is good, but the rest of the Top 5 is vulnerable)

I don't see any news in this. Depth of quality teams is going to go down by division size. What is the point you are trying to make? Looking at divisions as a whole does not tell us about the best teams in each division individually. The bolded disclaimer even says that.

I don't think anything you posted here tells us that some small class teams would not beat almost any team in the state. For example, using calpreps, 2 of the top 6 and 3 of the top 9 teams in the state are 2A schools. That indicates they could/would beat almost anyone in the state.

Strength of scheduling tells you alot and the average division power ranking tells you that overall the competition in those divisions is weaker. While a 2a, 3a and yes 1a may be dominant in their respective class it's pure speculation that they could compete given the steps up in quality of opponets in the higher classes. The numbers go up as you go higher in class. Success is not guaranteed in the higher classes.

I can only speak to 2A because that is nearly all that I watch. That being said, the top 5 in 2A would beat (in many cases, HAVE beaten) some top 10 teams all the way up to 6A. However, even the best 2A teams can't compete with the elite 6A teams. We learned that last year when CAL, the 2A state champ, got handled relatively easily by Simon Kenton. This year, both Danville and Desales have beaten Top 10 6A schools (Danville over #10 Frederick Douglass & DeSales over #6 Butler, according to the 10/2 rankings). I think the current top four in 6A would not be touchable by a 2A team, but PRP at #5 is possible. The Panthers and DeSales have a common opponent in Butler, both of them defeating the Bears by a narrow margin. So, in essence, my opinion is that the best teams in 2A could be considered top 5 teams as high as 6A. But there is no doubt that the watering down effect is faster in the smaller classes.

The only knock I have with this is 5A does have two great teams (CovCath & BG), one almost great team (Christian Co), and one very good team (South Warren).

It's not an especially strong class outside of those 4, but CovCath and BG are both Top 5-7 overall teams in the State

Everyone can agree that Cov Cath and BG are two very good squads, at least top 10 across the state. But Im not sold on Christian Co. nor South Warren. They are good clubs, but probably in the 20-25 range for me.
